How I Spent $13,289 To Make 400 WHP

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Yes, you can buy a car out of the box with 400 WHP, Yes you can make 400 WHP much cheaper than the way I did this. However; I wanted to be able to do this on the stock block and as reliable as possible. Not to say that anyone way to build a car is right or wrong but with that being said It is my car and this is how I wanted to build it. With the mods on the car when the time comes we can def make more power with a stronger block. However; I am perfectly happy with the car and the way it has come out thus far and I regret not a single dime on the build!

    Quality parts and you get what you pay for is beyond accurate when upgrading an EJ25 engine :) Reliability is everything unless it's not your daily and you accept the risks of course. Once again, great content and thanks for sharing. STI arriving in Oct. and the wait is killing me. Your videos are very informative and I see a quality trend with your take on the build and other builds I respect. I'm going for the STI sleeper and investing everything in the engine and reliability first and doing it right the first time and preparing it for the future. I think doing what makes you happy is what's best for you and your car, just like you and someone in the comments said. The car's sentimental value is worth so much more. Each car is as unique as the person building said car. Sometimes question myself as to why I got into this, then I look at my car and I smile. (Despite the fact that the entire front end rn is just crumpled).

I was thinking of using a Turbo Dynamics MDX555-400 Turbo with either a verticore or fmic . With Turbo technology constantly improving is there a better choice you know of? I spent $10K for a Stage 2 forged piston short block (making 313hp currently due to OEM fuel pump/regulator etc) so trust me, seeing you spend $13K to make 400hp speaks a lot to someone like me. I sometimes wish I could go back and start fresh starting with not buying a 07 STi that turned out to have a bad motor but hey, it is what it is. I'm just grateful to have a gf that helped me achieve my dream car AND double down to get a new motor for it :/ I know lots of people like to judge other's builds with mine being a huge “wtf” kind of story but I lived it and learned from it. I didn't have the garage space, tools or knowledge to do it all at home let alone time. Point is we all have our own stories with these motors. We all know what we're getting ourselves into so don't let the $$$ stick to the car's sentimental value. Keep dreaming and push those dyno numbers. We'll all get there one way or another with each being its own unique story to share

The STI was fast and responsive for sure and in S# mode it was nice the amount of money having to put into this car to get it where I’d want it wasn’t terrible but just being so small inside killed me on comfort! But maybe make more driving videos, possibly on a track setting personal best lap times to review your upgrades, especially since you don't have access to dyno after each new part/upgrade. Hey, I had a couple questions that you might be able to help me with. I am really sitting on the cusp of going full bolt on, cobb stage 3 on a 2019 STI, currently bone stock. But I am hesitant to progress because I am not sure if I should get a IAG block and forged pistons with rods, additionally I have heard that the newer STI's have a more robust internal factory design. You mentioned a video or two back that there is a "safe range" for power on a stock block. Could you elaborate a bit more about that safe range? Also I would really like to hear your opinion and others thoughts on the subject as well. I apologize if I you had mentioned this before.

  • @Smeedia

    @Smeedia

    No worries! So the 19+ have the type RA Short block and are capable of handling more power, not a significant amount more but I've seen a decent amount hanging out stroud the 400WHP range. For my year I have the older short block and about 350WHp is where the car is consider safe for the pistons before they let go. What is your power goal for the car? If it is around 400WHP IMO you will be good with the RA block that you have. Anything past that I would suggest an IAG block and building the heads

    @@Smeedia Appreciate the response, I am thinking I will shoot for about 330 wheel horse power for now, and with COBBs ethanol set up, that your video convinced me to consider, that may be within the realm of possibility.The road block I run into a lot is not finding sufficient data. i.e. what component will be my next most limiting item. I believe the next would be the turbo then block and internals but past that...? Say you go IAG stage 2.5 or better, that being the closed deck, do you now need to consider a water pump with higher mass flow rate? I think I may be getting into a situation that could be a bit more niche. I figure a tuner can help with this information, but knowing before asking would really help with sifting through the not so great people.

  • @Smeedia

    @Smeedia

    Your stock block will easily handle 330 WHP, i wouldent worry about swapping it out. Once you start pulling short blocks there's a lot of things that go through your mind like while the engine out I might as well replace this part snd that part when it's not needed. If anything get the car to 330WHP enjoy it for a while and if you want more later then you can use the parts you already have 🔥

Plus you forgot the quiet/silent bills: chopped hood to replace if sold perhaps. Lost warranty. Additional wear and tear. Add perhaps 5-8k more. One thing you could do for the rest of us: do some serial oil evaluations to see what is happenign IN the engine.... Would be curious if those data and oil change habbits/brands would be informative. Have to keep mine stock. Have the Subaru gold 7y/100k bumper to bumper......so only doing cosmetic stuff and trying to only do OEM parts for those (JDM if you will sometimes). Nelson Horton yeah I’m stage 1 phatbotti tuned now, have a catted downpipe, tgv/egr deletes, charge pipe and intercooler in the garage waiting to go on. I wanna go e85 so bad but the closest station is like an hour away so it’s kinda pointless in my area. Thanks for getting back though guys

    Personally, go straight for a DownPipe. This is a huge gain in performance. It doesn’t even have to be all the way back. I’m Stage 3+ FF and I’m still on my Stock CBE. CBE really doesn’t do anything besides audio.

    Wouldn’t you get let’s say a bmw M2 for instance? Not sure how 400 whp on an sti feels like given it’s a 4 cyl and awd, but 13k feels on the very high side for 400. What’s your take on it?

    I wluld love an M2! Wanted one for years! But there's something about subarus that I love and love building them. Id love to have other cars but not at the sacrifice if being able to build the STI. If I could do both I would love to!

    @@Smeedia I feel you, I'm the same way about it. Loved subaru since the mid 90s in Rally, and always wanted one since the first STI back in 04. Not easy to explain but my love towards the STI is just beyond explanation and the painful truth on how expensive and delicate it is to squeeze some power out of it. I brought up the M2 because it compares with your STI in power output and cost, but by all means I love what you've done with your STI. I have taken a few inspirations for my WR Blue 18 STI as well, so keep it up!!
