Huge props for mentioning the "cost of maybe less filtration" in the video. So many times that aspect is overlooked and/or not mentioned. As you mentioned, these are race cars but that will make a difference for someone running a daily considering buying one, especially in a dusty climate.
I can see, Scotty is someone you both really look up too.😉
More than enough scrap in the 180 catback to put a good "trash" system together with Marty's welding skills.
The only thing i would've changed with Marty's improvised run is swapped the 90 he's holding at 4:36 for two more 45's and a bit of straight pipe. That way the air doesn't need to make that narrow 90 twice. If you improvise this kind of stuff, it's good to avoid narrow 90's as much as you can, same rules as house ducting, but... in pipping for liquids, you don't need a soft 90, so there's none to buy (not at that size anyways). Also, PVC is perfectly good for the engine bay, by the time it melts, your wires are going to short on account of losing the insulation. One can step up their game and go with fire proof piping, used in modern buildings. That stuff is even higher on the melting point, and decent if you happen to pass near something very hot.
I'm absolutely loving this series! Short sharp episodes being real about your expectations and talking to people who know their stuff! 👍👍👍👍👍 Five thumbs up!
Actually shocked you went with that junk instead of a Simota intake system for the Swift after putting so much emphasis on getting actual JDM parts in previous videos. The Simota one is similar price to the K&N but at least keeps the intake side at the front of the vehicle and is properly shielded as well.

I love how Tuning Fork called Marty’s PVC craft project a “custom intake.” So much irony there.
The one positive to the replacement intakes that few people mention is simplifying the engine bay and added knuckle space. Makes access to other service parts like headlights so much better. Just my 2 cents.
I had the option of fitting a pod filter to my Eunos but in the end I just drilled a few 50mm holes in the airbox underneath the filter for added induction noise and left the standard filter in place. Made zero difference to the power but the extra noise made me smile every time I pressed the accelerator. And after I fitted a new exhaust and manifold I couldn't hear it anyway so I'm glad I didn't waste any money on it 😂

I concur. That's exactly what I do with my own cars. Lose the resonator box and extra tubes and slap a K&N panel filter in for about $60 USD. Great sound and a slight increase in revving quickness due to less restriction.

500 dollars for flexible hose? Are we sure Martys setup was the trash here?
cool snorkels by the best 4wd channel on youtube :)
Air velocity matters greatly in an intake. If you stick a 3 inch intake on a 2 inch TB, all the air is going to get turbulent at the choke point and hurt performance. You'd be better off running a 2 inch tube on a 2 inch TB. So if you slap one of those $20 ebay intakes on your ride, chances are it will be nice and loud but no gains or worse, loss in power. I did this with my 96 Infiniti G20. Went from stock to ebay intake, felt sluggish, put the stock tube back on with the pod filter, and got power. Then I read an article about intake air velocity and flow and decided to make my own intake. Went to Pepboys and got intake tubing the same size as the throttle body, drilled my own holes and it definitely felt the best of all 3 combos. Never tested it on a dyno or anything but there was a noticeable difference between the 3. So now I'm pretty selective when picking out intakes.
It is amazing to be able to watch this from the US. I ❤️ youtube for allowing me the opportunity to watch and say great job, thanks marty and moog, i love ❤️ your show!!!
Marty you need a strut brace on that 206, they flex terrible, massive improvement. The biggest thing your gonna find is those wheels are to big and mess with the gearing for the underpowered engine. Lowering the back is very hard work but so worth it, those torsion bar axels give a lot of lift off oversteer. I've spent most of my driving life and mechanic careers with Peugeots and know the characteristics of them. Also I can honestly say fuel makes a difference, if you have total petrol Un aus then use that it makes a difference. Hope this is helpful

Marty should look into a k&n drycharger bag. It covers your filter and is supposed to keep mud and water out of your filter. It isn’t waterproof, but is hydrophobic so if you splash water it won’t get past it.

Man I’m disappointed in the tuners analysis of these after market intakes, he hyped up the hot air K&N intake with lots of turbulent piping, whilst roasted the true cold air, smooth, long tubed pvc intake.
Was installing the appropriate K&N filter to replace the factory filter and keeping the factory designed piping a considered option?
loving this series so far kinda makes me want to get a swift
Loving the series!
Genuinely think you'd have been better off just changing the panel filter for a high flow one. Modern intake systems are generally far superior to anything you can buy off the shelf. There's a few different systems for my 208gti and in a comparison test, all the induction kits currently available lost plenty of power over stock and the k&n and pipercross panel filters had a marginal gain.
This series is refreshing
lol, thx for sharing guys. great vid as always
A DIY tip for PVC intercooler piping is to fill a long length with fine beach sand cap off each and leave it in the sun on a hot day or help it with a hair drier and then bend it to the shape of your engine bay let it cool then remove all the sand and presto, you have no joins. The sand prevents it from kinking so you'll have even diameter.
@siffoine
Жыл бұрын
Hard to believe it would work with that diameter. Sure it works for computer cooler hard tubing or greenhouses, but here the pipe wall thickness to kink size ration is not on your side, as the plastic needs to stretch around the kink and there simply is not enough of it.

Marty's $50 special hands down because the filter isn't getting hot air from sitting above the engine, Moog's "CAI " pipe is "hopeful psychological" at best. In my corolla from the same era I just popped in a K&N filter that fits in the factory box. I don't think it does all that much but sounds nice and chuffy.
Great choices
I made my own intake for my BH Subaru wagon (US Outback) out of ABS pipes and rubber joiners. I used the factory 'air horn' that feeds air from just above the radiator, bringing in cold outside air, then made a straight run to the elbow to the factory airbox, eliminating the extra bends and intake mufflers. Sounds better, better throttle response on tip in, and seems to improve torque pulling longer grades. Importantly, though, I did this 12+ years ago. It is still holding up. I also still have the factory ducts, if I got crazy and decided to put it back.
I can see it now… 20+ episodes before the showdown!!! Looking forward to each and every one ✌🏼
For my 1UZ-Nissan D21 swap I used GM intake pipes and box from the junkyard. $108USD for everything including clamps, box, filter, and MAF. GM used the same intake and filter setup for engines rated 270hp-320hp so it should be a good match for a 1UZ with bolt ons. I really like the oem look.
Hahahaha I have been a mate of Billsy's for 20+ years and I had totally forgotten about the pvc intercooler pipes 😂 they actually worked
One of the things I enjoy. The products you are buying with the cash car are budget friendly. Donut media has the Hi-Lo series. But high price cars parts are not in the realm of possibility for most of us. I enjoy that you are still trying to be as consumer friendly as possible.
For $20 i bought a used fmic kit for a twin turbo liberty. heaps of stainless pipes and different silicon joiners and a bunch of hose clamps. made up a cold air kit for my impreza, yanked out the foglight and put a filter right behind it. not bad, dorts good.
Nice 206 RC seats you got in the background 😉
:) That Peugeot 206 sounds nice after the filter swap!
I went to an exhaust shop and had them bend exhaust pieces for my turbo ducting. Worked extremely well and cost about $80 for the old air and both pipes from the turbo to the intercooler and intercooler to the intake hat.
Scotty the Viking next to Moog was like looking at Dwane Johnson and Kevin Hart 😂
Moog I had the swift sport K&N filter and I made a custom heat shield box and the hose was plugged directly in
Orchy! Now that's a blast from the past!
I did also put a pod filter on the 206(not for HP but for fun) it just fits perfectly on the stock inlet pipe no need for the extra piping and no need to get an adapter for the MAF sensor if you wanted to do it real cheap. Sad I just got rid of my 206 few days before Marty bought his
Best part of the day
i love it when Scotty immediately have an opinion when seeing marty's creation but decide to shut it.
GREAT CONTENT!!!!!!
I'm glad to see most comments agreeing the expensive system is junk. The PVC would be just as good if anything the tube would flow better not being convoluted you could even buy a K&N for Martys for like $100. Moogs filter was tiny. You can get a similar SAAS kit for like $60 with convoluted tube and pod in a box.
I did my mx5 with what i already had and bought a pod filter. I have created 3 separate cold air ducts to feed the filter area.
Filter Wears makes pre filter that wicks water off. Highly recommend, I use it on my turbo ls.
