In this video I compare natural light portrait photographs to using off camera flash and show you the differences between the two.
This shoot took place after sunset and throughout this video Demi never moves from the same spot which she was stood in.
All the photographs in this video were taken on my Sony A9 camera with the Sony FE 85mm 1.8 lens and the Sigma 135mm 1.8 lens. For off camera flash I used the MagMod Pro 24 Octa, Godox V860II speedlights and the Godox X2T trigger.
A huge thank you to Demi for modelling and being amazing as always! You can follow her here: / demihughes1x

    Another excellent video Neil. The OCF images are definitely my favorite. I was quite interested to see how the bare flash looked so awesome, I was not expecting such great results…I will have to try it!

    Thank you very much Adrienne! I didn't need a modifier on the second flash because it was only lighting up the foreground grass - it wouldn't have looked good to use a bare flash on Demi. Thank you very much again!

    Hi Neil Can you tell me why you used a cool gel instead of a warm gel in the light. Thank you.

  • @NeilRedfern

    @NeilRedfern

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Stephanie - yes of course. The blue CTB gel made Demi much cooler, so to counteract that I raised my white balance. That gives Demi a nice skin tone but also means that the rest of the image appears much warmer

    Hi Neil great vid as always... can you just explain your metering mode and I would suspect manual focus setting. I guess danger of auto focus on grass used for foreground bokeh if set to auto.... do you use focus peaking on the Sony ?

  • @NeilRedfern

    @NeilRedfern

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Darren, good question. I shoot in manual everything and take my exposure reading from the EVF (so what I am seeing through the viewfinder basically) so the metering mode doesn't matter. If I wasn't shooting this way I would use spot metering. And with mirrorless cameras, especially the A9, the autofocus is crazy good so I had no problems using it here. I don't use focus peaking unless using manual focus, which I very rarely use. I hope this helps?

    Another great video Neil. I've just purchased the X2t & V860 for my A3 and was wondering is there a setting in the camera you can have so it doesn't disable the proper ambient reading in the EVF? Cheers, Andy.

  • @NeilRedfern

    @NeilRedfern

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thank you very much Andy! Yes you can do that - you can choose to have the live view display on or off, which I think will give you the result you want :) Personally I choose to disable live view when shooting with off camera flash though

  • @andyholdsworthmusicphotogr162

    @@NeilRedfern Thanks for your reply Neil. On the A73, live view is disabled automatically when the X2t is switched on, but since my question, I have worked out that you can assign ' Shot result preview ' to a custom button. So you can now see in camera the ambient exposure when you want to under expose the background...
