I did a very similar thing! Paid off my loans and my husband's. Now saving to buy a house in full. So far have over 50K saved.

I am definitely seeing how becoming minimalist is changing my finances. You learn to appreciate the things in your life and find true happiness in what you have instead of trying to find it at the mall.

What is the ultimate goal with the money? An emergency fund? A down payment on your own home? Or just some security? Are you still living like that and saving? Will you post a similar video in 2 years saying you saved $65,000 in 4 years? Great video and thanks for sharing. Cheers

Great to see other young people being conscious and saving their money. I saved so much money by simply meal prepping riding my bike to work, and only purchasing clothes when they are on sale. It also helps that I don't drink so no need to spend money at bars and I don't have any under grad or grad school debt.

We make about the same (well I live in the US so I guess I make more? Because of exchange rate) but I am pleased to see someone save like me. I paid off my mortgage and have saved over 20k now (not including retirement) but gives me hope that there are girls like you out there that like to save.

I have 15k in retirement and living the dream with a net worth of just south of 200k (paid off car). isn't it great to be weird? I am happy to hear about people like you out there. it gives me hope.

+Gregory May Gregory May Ok, so a few ways I saved.. It took a while & I only have about $500 in savings but its better than nothing & is growing steadily. ( I started at the 1st of the year) First thing I did was start automatically sending money to my savings account from my check. I decided that all I could really save was about $75/ check. That comes to $150 per month. Turn off the hot water heater if you can. I work nights, so I'd turn it on in the morning when I got home every other day. I live in Texas & the water stayed hot enough for showers. This works because I have an electric water heater & live alone most of the time. , It didn't save tons,, but saved some. I have internet, but living where I do, Netflix doesn't work..but still $75/ month for just internet .. My phone is Straight Talk, so $30/ month there. I don't need the latest & greatest & so my flip phone does fine for me. Adjust your W4 so you take out a bit extra each check. I know this sounds dumb since you don't have enough to live on. I'm saying like $5-25/ check. Nothing drastic. If you are like me, you'd spend that either way. When income tax rolls around it comes back to you as a lump sum. Then you can pay down a bill or fix the car, whatever you NEED. Everyone's situation is different, but I do look at purchases & think about how many hours I have to work to get them. Then, is it really worth it? Really it is personal choices about where to cut & exactly what you can live without. Hell, if I had my way I'd pretty much do without electricity, but I do love my air conditioning! Eat cheaply.. there are tons of 5 ingredient recipes on Pinterest. I eat a lot of the same thing .. til its gone. With kids, that is harder to do, they like & need variety. Freeze leftovers as "Planned Meals" as opposed to "OH man, that again? "Those are a few tips I have as a dad with bills.. I took a fun challenge once to get me in the right frame of mind, & it might work for you. Its a NO MONEY for a week challenge You pay your bills, get gas to go to work & that's it. Eat what you have in your house & do without anything else. It makes you see exactly what you need vs what you think you need. .Most of us have enough food in the house to skip getting groceries for one check. Good luck & I'm by no means an expert, but have been doing lots better with my money. It's a mindset. Make it a game do whatever it takes, but do something. Anything is better than wallowing in the despair of debt.

texjames2000 I alredy do almost all the things you say. The only thing is I love my car and spend a bit to much to keep it in top condition. But nothing fancy like bling rims. If it fails annual inspection I fix what it failed on and if something brakes I fix it (sometimes I could avoid fixin' it for a year or so...). I also spend a lot on tools (I'm a mechanic...) but still I buy the cheapest possible not snap on overpriced shit. I have a freezer and make food from scratch. I can kill my kids but that is not very good idea;) Thanks for your replay.

+Gregory May Just remember that you didn't get into debt overnight & won't get out quickly either. I take my income tax & pay off bills.. Unfortunately I am now saddled with another car payment.. the other one cost me over $3000 in repairs in less than 6 months. On top of the over $7000 I already spent since I bought it. It had to GO! Glad you have a sense of humor & are doing things like making food from scratch & freezing & such. We all do what we can & I know that I'm still not wealthy, but having a few things paid off & that money in the bank makes me feel way better than I did a year ago at this time. Good luck, & just be patient as it will take a while. Took me about 4 years to get to a place where I could even start paying stuff off.

texjames2000 I fix my own cars usually with second hand parts or ebay cheap aftermarket parts. I glue them and fix whenever I can. I sell scrap metal, sell my unwanted things on ebay do some cash jobs whenever I can but still struggle to pay my bills. I estimated that I should be earning 50-100% more in order to live as I live now but pay every bill on time and have some money left...

very doable. saving $10-15k a year with a sound budget is fairly easy. I bought a car with my first $30K saved and within 5 yrs of that purchase I managed to save an additional $40K

You are such an inspiration! I will try to change a few things in my life to make more simplistic. I travel from work every day 30mins one way. In addition, i go to school and drive another 30mins. Gas, time, and energy has gone to waste!!! You are the first video i've watched about minimalism and i absolutely admire your lifestyle. Thank you Melissa!!!!!

So inspiring! My husband and I did something similar to first pay off debts, then build our emergency fund, and last, for our down payment. I went part-time to be with my babies so we did this on a 1.5 income. It can be done! It's all about managing your money, not how much you make. We're still at the same income and living very comfortably. Love your videos!!

Awesome job girl!! I tell everyone they can save and over time it will grow to where they can do something to invest that money. NO one wants to cut their expenses and go without some of the little things and get way too jealous over the people that are willing to go without for a few years so they can live much better lives in the future. My living situation, earnings and spending are very similar to as you described for yourself. I work 15 hours a week as a college student and I'm bringing in nearly $1000 every month. At only 15 hours a week!! If I worked 40 hours a week I would be bringing in $2,250 a month and I'm only 19 years old. I saved 15K over the course of high school and now I'm going to college for Aerospace Engineering. When that time comes at Boeing or Lockheed or something I'll be making 6K a month :D

Well I guess that also depends on where you live. I live in Switzerland and here it would be very hard to get by with that income. Rent would be similar if you divide it with 2 other people yes. But health insurance alone that is mandatory here is 300 if you chose a cheap one. Usually rather 500-600 A MONTH. A pack of ramen noudles I read could be for 15 cent in the US. Here you would pay maybe 2 bucks so food is also so expensive. If you have an income of 4k a month it would be considered not bad but „good“ income would be 5-6k a month.

This is a great example of perseverance and excellent self-control applied to finances. Minimalist lifestyle at it's best. However, it is very unrealistic to expect your expenses to stay the same for 24 months like you presented. One thing that i learned for myself is to plan ahead and live on previous month income and plan for emergencies with Rainy Day Budget. YNAB did miracles to make that into a habit. Otherwise, this is an excellent inspiration for people who live in era of crippling overconsumption. Cheers!

trouble is a wrangler will depreciate after a few years and you will have to save again and live a minimalist life, best save then invest in something that will make you even more money

CrAZy bg jeeps in general have always had a decent resail value. However, for someone who is turning 16, unless their parents have loads of money, it's not likely they will be able to buy a $30,000+ vehicle. I wish I could buy a 67 gt500 fastback, but probably not right now. At this age, a vehicle is a must, but spending $30,000 on one is not practical in my opinion. 7,000 of that could go for a very decent used vehicle, and the rest can either go towards college or just be saved or invested and collect interest.

In the 6 years that I've been saving, it's over 100K . That includes the year that I worked 2 days a week and made about $8 less than I do now. I still enjoy life, but I've just learned like you just to find ways to cut back and I have found free, cheap things to do. great video!

+Musicator1027 I made 27k last year but I've managed to save up over 30k I the in about 2.5 years 💁🏾 lol it's really not hard. Now I have a high yield savings account and make about $30 in interest monthly.

Danny B I live upstate New York and I pay 600 a month for rent all of my monthly expenses are around 1,100 😊 that includes rent, car insurance, gas, food ect at this point I've saved almost 50k oh and I'm a full time student in college lol
