you should keep a smoke detector in the building, considering what you do, you should get one that you can easily switch on and off

There was one, but because the fire started in the night, no one was there to hear it until it was too late. Definitely going have a new system that will notify me remotely in the future, with some redundancies as well.

firstly thanks for the videos. i will freely admit i am often critical of your efforts, not in a decericive way though more of a practical objection . you have produced tools and materials then applied a monetary figure based on time taken . this creates a value with NO basis in reality as you are not a craftsman master or otherwise , your materials as well arent from craftsmen producing a material to a standard. it may take you 50x times longer to do a task or the tool you create may look good but be useless by design for its intended propose because you dont use them... i do applaud you for doing even though i feel you stop far too soon with crude proof of concept not functional serviceable tools . the rebuild is coming along well , but please remember it starts fast and crawls to a finish which causes stress that often is the downfall to projects. as i see it you are now able to revisit the previous episodes with more knowledge and experience and create better than proof of concept tools with many episodes of service to come 8D . again thanks for the videos

It's bittersweet, but i think that development matches the theme of the channel. Alongside innovation, perseverance was the trait that propelled humanity forward and it's obvious that you showed a lot of perseverance during those hard times. I think i speak for a lot of your fans when i say that we're proud of you

Agree with some of these comments: you’re very much living the experience of our ancestors. To build and struggle, then loose everything. Fire is just one disaster: pests, nature, people, and more at any time can destroy everything. The insurance situation is also a gift, even if it doesn’t feel that way: 100 years ago when your house burned down or such that was it. Gone. Reaching out to the other people is the only thing that has always been an option. Write a book, bet you make a bunch of money.

Since the fire happened, a lot has changed with me....2 weeks after the fire, I offered my help with the clean up, a few days later my house caught fire from linseed oil. Seeing this rebuild project has helped keep my spirits up....and on the off chance they see this, I'm still happy to help

@@Greentrees60 Boiled linseed oil cures exothermically. If there's a lot of surface in a poorly ventilated space (like if you've soaked a cotton rag in it and then left it scrunched up somewhere, or that's how it's usually demonstrated) it can spontaneously combust. That's why I'm terrified of working with the stuff even if everyone else seems to love it.

if i may suggest, perhaps you could rebuild the kiln on a skid or lifted section, so that you can maneuver it in the future if needed.

When you go to paint, might be worth looking into fire resistant paints, some aren't that much more expensive and can take a lot of heat/fire before allowing any damage to the surface (the paint essentially expands when burned to create a carbon foam that insulates the underlying material, then you can just scrape off the foam and repaint and as long as the fire gets put under control somewhat soon have almost no damage)

From the ashes rises a Phoenix, Andy. You’re inspiring a lot of people to take tragedy and find a way to turn it around. The fact you didn’t give up might be what gives some else the power to not give up on something themselves today. I can’t wait to see more videos.

Firstly, that's inspiring. Keep up the great work. Secondly, very seriously consider getting the building sprinklered. That would very probably be highly advantageous given the degree and type of experimentation you'll probably be doing.

I've been looking into some chemical sprinkler systems, since I don't think I can run water to the building. Hopefully we will have enough budget left for something like that.

@@htme it's also important to consider the type of fires that you don't plan to have. Example: Water not great for putting out electrical or grease fires. Every extinguishment method has it's drawbacks. So, make sure you do your due diligence in the way of research. And I'd imagine you'll be doing some chemistry in the future as that's a huge chunk of technological society. Worst comes to worst keep future installations and additions in mind to maybe forestall any expected headaches. Like, "I plan on installing sprinklers so what changes now would make that easier in the future." Anyways, keep on trucking dude, you are doing great.

Does he still have the team? I haven’t seen the girl since the fire. The blacksmith while helping in some episodes isn’t really part of his team. Neither are the dudes from the iron smelting.

Andy. When the fire happened we the viewers were there with you to support you in any way we can. You've had this channel going for 7 years educating us all the way, I think you're stuck with us for at least another 7 years. We would rather you made good quality videos that you're happy with than make something that's 'that'll do'. If it takes a while then we wait, you come first. I think there's room here to give your dad a big thumbs up 👍 for helping and a big thumbs up for everyone else that helped with the rebuild 👍 you are all awesome. 😃👍 Take care Andy and we'll see you in the next video. 👋😀

I think you're doing the right thing with the reset. Sticking to a format that only allows you to progress to the next task can really hinder you following your passion if you get a new idea. You should do whatever you feel like making, people are here for the channel, do what makes you happy. Sounds cliche to say, but people can tell if you don''t enjoy something, do what you enjoy.

This is why they say being a parent is a lifetime job. You don’t stop parenting your kid once they’re an adult. When the fire happened he was there to encourage you to rebuild and helped you every step of the way, and for that he should be proud. It’ll always be a fond memory for you to look back on and a silver lining of this whole rebuilding process

I'm just so happy to see you still going. I can't imagine the challenges you've been through in the last year, but it really does speak to your character and grit that you're still here. Thanks for all the amazing videos!

Insurance: The guys you pay regularly, on the condition that they pay you in turn if shit goes south. Then you have to fight tooth and nail(because they have all the actual weapons) to get them to hold up their end of the bargain.

Usually the contracts only cover certain types of damages and depending on cause. Which is why it's good to know what exactly you're paying for. Fire damage to the outside workshop probably wasn't covered.

I can really feel the emotion you're going through in how you talk about this. Im so glad you're able to rebuild and keep doing this!

Reading the title How to Rebuild Everything brought tears to my eyes. So many people would have given up after going through this, understandably. But you doubled down and I'm so glad you did. My family loves your content, it brings us a lot of joy, and has taught us a lot.

I am amazed by how much you are able to do yourself. It's way more than I could myself. Over the years, you have built a unique set of skills. Those skills, combined with curiosity and an ever present hunger to learn new things, is what makes this whole thing so enjoyable for me. Well done. I don't know if you had fire extinguishers or other fire suppression tools present in the old shop, but it never hurts to have a few of those on hand, especially if you're building a dedicated forge area. Thank you. For never giving up to learn and discover new things.

I've learned so much watching you're channel. It forces a study of technological history that can't gloss over the rough edges. I never thought about how important a lathe was, or how hard it was to transition to iron with only bronze tools, or that copper just lays on the ground, or that yeast is made my letting flower sit out! Like... dang. So much I didn't realize I didn't know. Loved ever video. Thanks for keeping it up. Making content is hard, and you've got a right to be tired sometimes. Even without a fire.

I've looked into a couple options and was hoping we'd have the budget leftover to invest, but not sure now that money is running short. Also a little afraid of false alarms potentially causing damage to all the equipment, since we do work with a fair amount of controlled fire.

@@htme different fire suppression systems activate differently. A standard sprinkler system uses a low melting point metal to activate a single sprinkler head which minimizes water damage and nearly eliminates false activations. However it means the fire has gotten large enough to do decent damage to the structure. Other systems have an IR sensor and a particulate sensor and will activate the sprinkler system when both are triggered.

I could feel the pain you felt at taking that kiln apart and it must have been an incredibly bitter feeling every time you took out a brick, and I think it shows how strong you are that you managed to do it even through that feeling.

Doing it all from absolute scratch .. a dream of mine that wouldn't realistically happen, then finding your sandwich and clothing videos .. just an instant fan. Someone else that really wanted to be able to do it .. however roughly, to understand it all .. ya I'm so glad you're continuing.

This project should be titled 'When Life Hands You Lemons, Make Lemonade'. This decision to continue forward is the correct one. I could not picture a maker giving up like that, it goes against the core of the maker spirit. It'll be quite nice to watch your upcoming videos where you get to enjoy your proverbial lemonade.
