How I Quit My Job & Became a Successful Artist

This is the story of how I quit my job to become a full time artist. Many artists dream of making a living from their art. Very few are able to achieve that dream and I am thankful every day that I am able to live my life as a full time artist. In this video, I travel between Southampton & Montauk to exhibit in two art festivals, including my favorite art festival: The Montauk Artists Association Art Show on the Green!

    Thanks for another great video Evan. I'm curious about how you work the logistics of flying to and from shows. Where/how do you store your tent, artwork, and van and then get to the airport?

    Great question and the answer is a lot more simple than you probably think. When I pack up after every show, I try to pack my van in a way so that everything is ready to be set up at the next show. Then I park my van at the airport economy parking lot, or sometimes at a storage facility if that’s more economical. Then when I fly back, I just pick up my van and drive to the next show. If I need to restock some pieces or have some new work that I want at the next show, I carry them with me on the airplane (if they are smaller prints) or ship artwork to a hotel or shipping center near the next show.

    Evan, it is good to be your own boss when you do something that is your passion. I never got to your shows in Montauk, but we met at the show in Babylon. I have your prints hung in my bedroom now. I got the Miami Buddah print as a gift for someone close to me for Christmas one year, and she loved it. I left Long Island 2 years ago and live in Las Vegas, doing what I love and being close to my parents.

    Absolutely, it’s a huge help. I was full time as a single artist for many years before being married. But having two incomes in our family does help create extra stability, of course.

    Do you have your tent setup with you when flying? Checking in your art and tent and panels?

  • @EvanReinheimer

    @EvanReinheimer

    19 күн бұрын

    No, I don’t fly with the setup. I will sometimes leave my van at the airport when I do a show out of state and have another in that same area coming up. I’ll fly home in between and just leave all of my show stuff in the van. Then when the next show comes up, I’ll fly back, pick up the van and head to the next show. If I need to restock, I’ll bring small prints on the plane with me or ship large work to a location near the next show.

    @@EvanReinheimer most of my artworks are with me where I live and at the moment I rent cargo vans to go to art festivals that is within close proximity where I live, I guess my question if I decide to apply to a show that is out of town or to a different province, how do I get my set up form point A to B and vice versa...

  • @EvanReinheimer

    @@cedricusmanartI own a cargo van that I use to transport my work to and from shows. Before that, I had a cargo trailer that I pulled behind my vehicle, before that I rented a cargo trailer and before that I loaded everything into a car believe it or not. Start small and local, like you’re doing. As you grow, your vehicle needs will change and you can invest some of the money you’ve made into a cargo trailer or dedicated art vehicle or even drive the vehicle you have now to shows that are further away. It sounds like you’re on the right track.

    Evan, as a full-time artist, what do you do about medical insurance? Especially with a family. I think it's one of the things that is stopping many artists from making that move.

  • @EvanReinheimer

    @EvanReinheimer

    10 ай бұрын

    This is an important question. Now, thankfully, my wife has health insurance for our family through her job. But in the past I’ve had marketplace insurance that was fairly reasonable. So, I just budgeted for it when that was the case. It would be great if there were someway independent artists could get some kind of group rate on health insurance. That may exist somewhere but I’m not familiar with it.
