Art Festival vs Gallery - Who Sells More Artwork?

Outdoor art festivals are often overlooked by artists who are looking to sell their artwork. This is a huge mistake. When I was in art school, I thought art galleries were the only practical way to sell my art. Thankfully, I soon learned that there is a lot more opportunity to sell artwork by exhibiting at art festivals. I'm not saying that art galleries are bad for sales at all. Art galleries have benefits of their own and should be part of an artists marketing strategy. However, art festivals and art fairs are written off by many aspiring artists.

Team #artfestivals 👏🏼 Great video, yet again. Watching this, I’m thankful that MICA’s Illustration Department had visiting artists come during senior year to explain the wide variety of ways they were able to make a living as artists. There’s also the weird antiquated idea that selling your work makes you a “sellout”. A lot of artists I think stereotypically put “fame” ahead of “financial success”… their loss 😂 I personally don’t care who knows me, I’m just glad that people relate to my work enough to live with it in their homes. ♥️

“Fame” doesn’t pay bills. And what is “fame” anyway? Think about the amount of work you’ve sold in your life so far…hundreds, maybe even thousands of individual pieces that are displayed in peoples homes every day. Those people remember you and think of you on some level every time they see that piece. (Ok maybe that sounds a little creepy🤣 but…) That could be considered fame on some level. People who you don’t know, know you…you’re famous, Jackie🤩 The freedom to do what we want with our time as an artist really is the ultimate success. My art school was great but gave almost no direction on how to ever make a living. It seems most art schools lack the business side of art education.

@@EvanReinheimer when you put it that way, I guess we are famous. 🤣 I agree about art school’s lack of business education, it’s a shame. My school seemed to be a glaring exception. We learned how to do our taxes as artists, how to write estimates, contracts, invoicing, ways to promote our work, what to include & not include in our portfolios/artist statements on our websites to appeal to clients, etc. The importance of structuring your day as a self employed person. Multiple revenue streams were heavily stressed, especially since I was in school during the crash. Granted, I was an illustration major, which is more on the commercial side of the coin…

I don't comment nearly enough on your Channel no, but I greatly appreciate you making time to make these videos. I have recently started trying to expand my photography business from periodic two Galleries and festivals and your channel has been a great source of information and inspiration. I'll also add that I recently took a trip to Morocco where drones are prohibited and you inspired me to take up kite aerial photography. It was a lot of fun and I anticipate doing more of it stateside. Thank you!

I just got into my first art fest, emerging artist program, Gasparilla! Since couple of years ago I got set on the idea of traveling to sell my artwork, I've been combing internet for any information I could find on a topic. There is very limited information about it and even more limited in quality of presention that you have. Thank you for helping me!

I love your channel Evan and I'm torn between going the gallery route or the art festival route. I think you nailed many of the advantages of art festivals but I would have listed some disadvantages and also listed some of the advantages of going with gallery. For me probably the biggest disadvantage of art festivals is that you have to cart a lot of work all over the country or at least all over the region within which you live in order to make full-time income selling art. On the plus side of galleries, first they carry with them a certain amount of prestige and (hopefully) they have relationships with collectors they can present your work to who've expressed an interest in purchasing work. No art festivals certainly are well-attended, how many people who walk through them are really there to purchase art as opposed to just wanting to simply spending a nice day doing something different. I'm just thinking through all these things right now and have a ways to go before I make up my mind.

It’s not a one or the other decision. You can (and should) pursue both art festivals and galleries, if you are able to. Myself and many artists do both concurrently. This helps diversify your income stream. There are advantages and disadvantages to art festivals and galleries, of course. Prestige is great, but it doesn’t pay any bills😉
