Here's a video about how I prepare eggshells to add to my aquarium water in order to mineralize it and add some carbonates to buffer pH.

The purpose of the oven method is to make the membrane really brittle along with the shell. The oven heat turns the rubbery stretchy membrane into this brittle crust. Then, the the membrane can be eaten as an extra bit of protein grinded in with the calcium of the shell :). I do this method when making calcium powder for my reptiles.

@@harry103 you’re right, you could also use a toaster oven which is my preferred method. An oven however, has more room for more eggs. So you end up saving time and energy in the long run by making a large surplus. I can tell you, for the three years I’ve had my Leopard Gecko, I only ever used the oven once for making calcium powder out of eggshells because I made so much of it hahaha. Other times I used the toaster oven when there’s some spare egg shells laying around. Applying high heat is what makes the rubbery membranes brittle, even when dried by the sun I found the membranes still get chewy or rubbery which I worry would choke my pet. So that’s why I have to overkill it with high heat.
I recently bought a pestle and mortar set for just this purpose. I enjoy taking my frustrations out on some shells. 😆

Thank you for this video. I actually breed Mystery snails for my LFS and I've always thought buying calcium supplements for my aquarium was a waste of money. I've had thoughts on egg shells but now I know. Thanks again.
Thank you so much for this info! Definite money saver and exactly the info I've been looking for!
Came here looking for answers, got the answers. Thank you very much. Regards from Portugal.
That's a super big Angel fish!
Great info!
I usually take cuddlebone and put it under my substrate.
Nice! Thank you.
"Polished Man". ❤ I'm buying blue polish today.
I'm assuming if you have shrimps that membrane will be a very nutritious snack for them since they need a lot of protein in their diets for good egg production!
Absolutely gorgeous Angel fish
Personally I find putting it in the oven at 200c for 10 mins just makes them easier to crush, I did think maybe I might actually be making the internal structure weaker thus maybe making it disintegrate quicker but totally just a theory

That also destroys any remaining protiens from the membrne.
Loving the video. The 250 for an hour is likely a spillover from growing plants using eggshells as a natural fertilizer. Cooking the shells for that long supposedly makes the calcium more readily bioavailable for the plants. I'm not a foshologist or calcified, but perhaps that could be true for the snails, or could just be the well meaning thought behind it. I guess if you feel like you need a quick calcium boost precooking the shells could make it work quicker, but if you are consistently providing them then maybe it would be pointless
Very helpful information. Much appreciated. Good video. 🐣🍶🍳💡🕵🐔🐣
I keep a glass cooking pan in oven then just throw egg shells in it as they are used ,they get cooked when something else is being cooked

That's a good idea.
Putting them in the oven did help delete that membrane for me. I only cooked for 15 minutes on low though.
small coffee grinder will do a great job grinding egg shells
If I was to guess , Oven heats the object while the microwave reacts to water. Altho like you said any bacteria would survive 2 min in the microwave.
Btw I went to house of tropicals (my lfs) and there was the biggest boesemani rainbowfish I've ever seen. Like 6 inches

Yeah, they're really pricy fish though.
I crushed up some eggshells and used a piece of gauze and a rubber band to make like a tea bag. All the powder went into the water without the larger pieces and I just let it hang in there for less than a minute. I'm wondering if it gave them enough but you could see the cloud of dust in the water. I just didn't want all the chunks in there with the black gravel and background look.

I doubt it'll have much impact. Even putting several eggshells in a tank isn't enough for me to measure any difference in TDS, pH, or GH.
Impressive collection of fish...what kinds are in there (other than the Angelfish and the shark which are obvious)...especially the yellow ones (kinda looks like giant rainbow fish/gourami shapes) and the larger brown/red oscar-like fish? Thank you.
@DanHiteshew-oneandonly

The Yellow ones are female albino Millenium Rainbowfish. the bright orange are the males. The big brown fish is a Ctenopma acutirostre (African spotted leaf fish / leopard gourami / etc...)

Just using the boiling method will do the trick why go though all the nonsense of heating shells in the oven? Of you don't mind answering a question, where do you get your long finned Angels from? I am looking to buy another one to add to the tank, thanks!!

I read that egg membranes are good for creating beneficial bacteria and to filter hard minerals but I'm not sure the science behind it does anyone know about this?

How much quantity of egg shell is needed for 10 litre of water. And what is the time internal for the addition? Please reply me
@DanHiteshew-oneandonly

I don't really have any specific recipe. I just add some and assume it's doing it's thing. You can try adding one egg shell, and then test your water a day later to see if it made a difference. If not, try adding more.
What happens if you put the egg shells without making a powder or crushing them? Will it not do what it's supposed to do?
@DanHiteshew-oneandonly

It will, but it looks ugly having eggs in the tank. Crushing it provides more surface area which does help it dissolve faster too.

That membrane is basically the purest collagen supplement you can get. imo leave it in
SOMEONE ANSWER IF YOU KNOW... I have tried to look everywhere for this advice. basically, I've done that and powdered the eggshells, of course, there are a few bigger pieces the grinder couldn't get to, my guppies always try (or do) eat the eggshell pieces, I'm afraid I could cause harm to my fish in doing so such as stopping them up. Does anybody have any experience with this? Do I need to worry or is it all good and I can proceed? MUCH APPRECIATED!!
