How I Microneedle at Home with Dr. Pen - Demo & Tips

Microneedling at home with a derma pen, showing you how I do it safely and giving a demo, plus tips. Does this really work? I am going to start a series here, documenting progress and any and all skin changes. This will be video #1. I really want to know if it can help repair sun damage, scars or lighten wrinkles & lines, as well as improve thickness of skin and texture.
Demo starts at: 3:02
If you want to know as well, please subscribe and visit my website at: www.LifeandDiy.com because I will document it in depth, with photos and updates. Some of the first impressions I had on the pen, I cut out of the video because the video itself was too long. I will share all my first impressions on the website.

MICRONEEDLING PRODUCTS I PERSONALLY USE⤵
I own both the Dr. Pen A6S and the Dr. Pen A6 - both are excellent. I prefer the A6S for its features and it seems a bit stronger than the other one. Here is the A6S on Amazon - amzn.to/3RSRwbX and here is the A6 on Amazon -
amzn.to/3ErscH0 * These are affiliate links and I earn a small commission on purchases. Thank you!
The hyaluronic serum I use is Pure Hyaluronic Acid from Cos De Baha
amzn.to/2YWRLav
For a great sunscreen for very dry skin (no parabens, great ingredients), I highly recommend Cotz SPF 40: amzn.to/2TkCUFC
For an amazingly affordable sunscreen without a white caste, great for dry to normal skin - Good Molecules SPF 30: amzn.to/3QAOzPN
The Gloves I use while needling are from Amazon as well and they are very thick, and won't rip if you have longer nails (haven't for me anyway). They are Nitrile exam gloves: amzn.to/2U35wU3 and I also use them at home for many other purposes as well. When I used to buy them they were only $9 and they have raised the price a lot & the quality isn't the best with some of them. It is hit or miss.

    Please don’t any oils or anything emollient or occlusive during microneedling or 48 hours after. You only want to use hyaluronic acid or a water based product safe for transdermal injection or you greatly increase the odds of infection. You even want to avoid sunscreen if possible by staying inside the first 24 hours. Any dermatologist or trained esthetician will tell you the same thing. Vitamin C or any actives are a no too, people have gotten foreign body granulomas from using Vit C and some of the cases were permanent. There’s no need to go over .50mm for collagen induction and I wouldn’t go over that anyway unless seeing a professional. Are you aware that you don’t want to microneedle more than every 4-6 weeks? Collagenase the enzyme that breaks down collagen peaks at 2 weeks so microneedling sooner can do the opposite of what you want. The only exception would be if you’re using .25 or the nano cartridges for better penetration of products.

    Faux Wanata why are you wanting to add the magnesium? You want to sanitize your skin and your instruments as much as possible but you don’t want anything that won’t evaporate like alcohol does. It’s not solely about germs (though that’s a big one) but also about not using anything not safe for transdermal injection.

    Just got my Dr Pen and Hyaluronic acid! So excited to do this on my own. Treatments like these cost $150-300 depending on where their office is located. I live in SoCal so prices range from $150 outside LA to $300+ for anywhere near Beverly Hills. It’s insane how much they up charge just because of their location and client income. Same products, same technique, $100-200 more. A word of caution to anyone embarking on this journey: 1. Sanitize, sanitize, sanitize. Sanitize your table, hands, chair, tools. If you even think you’re going to touch it, sanitize it before you start. You’re damaging your skin and it will be open to all the bacteria in your room. 2. Easy does it. The hardest lesson for any skincare enthusiast is to be patient. Why try 1% salicylic peel when you can try 40%? Except that’s not how health works. Be kind to your skin, you’re hurting it after all. 3. No sunlight or anything oil related until fully healed (3-4 days after). Acne IS oil (sebum). You do NOT want to introduce oil while it’s healing. Water-based only. 4. Keep your wits about you. Don’t expect a miracle. Skincare can brighten and tighten to a degree but it will not give you perfect skin if it’s too late. That will need plastic surgery and fillers. You’re basically turning back time a few years. If you already have a lot of acne scars (me), the best you’ll get is even skin tone. The icepick scars will not be completely fixed from Microneedling. Best I can do is lessen it by a little.

    Thanks for sharing this with all of us! I've been using at-home microneedling for about three years, and it does work for me. I'm 63 years old. The benefits that I've noticed are plumper, more glowing skin, and those two things make wrinkles and fine lines look smaller. These benefits start showing up about 4-6 weeks AFTER the procedure, and they stay for months. I found that I can do it once a week to maintain the improvement. If I stop doing it for say, three months, I notice a big difference in my skin... it looks flat and lots of dry lines. In my experience, you do NOT need to experience significant pain during the process for it to be effective. You do NOT need to see ANY blood spots AT ALL. And yes, starting with the smallest length needles (0.25mm) is the best way to do it. Then go up to the 0.5 needles, then 0.75 and then 1.0 (many kits have all these sizes in the package.) There are longer needles but holy cow, they draw blood and we don't need to be THAT vain, do we? Good luck with this, I hope you have success like I did. Thanks again for posting. :)

    Thank you SO much for sharing this. It is inspiring and great to hear of someone else who is having success with it and to learn of the details you shared. I really appreciate it. When you do it once a week, how deep do you do it? I agree about not needing major pain or to go really deep to have benefits. Even 0.25mm can be really beneficial. :)

    One more thing to say. I am in school studying aesthetics and we were taught that when doing the Micra needling you only go in straight lines whether it be up down to the side vertical, whichever way, it has to be a straight line. You don't ever go around in circles anywhere because that can cause scarring!!!

    You need to have a numbing gel for 20/30 minutes. Prep your face, wash it and sanitize it. Then use microneedling with hyloranic or water based products to deliver these products deep into your skin and to glide the pen on. Use the pen in vertical, cross, an circular motion in each area. It is ok to feel hot, tight, swelling, and slight pain with it. It feels like sun burn. Then do not touch your face or wash it til 24 hour period. You can use cooling gel to cool it down. That's at least what is my Aesthetician do. Redness would resolve in 2 days for me. The skin might flakes after word. You would see beautiful skin on the 4th day and on.

I have deep scars on my cheek from cystic acne and further scars from DIY-gone-wrong to fix ice-pick scars home-use TCA- I use cotton bud instead of toothpick & cause even bigger holes on skin and uneven skin tone. I just did my first session today. I feel that stamping can target the the scar area better.

    Thank you for sharing! I'm contemplating on buying the M8. I noticed that you never used numbing cream. Does it hurt to do this without it? I'm hesitant to use numbing cream as I have very sensitive skin. Dr Pen also recommends wiping the numbing cream off with 60% alcohol. Yikes! Wouldn't that dry out your skin?

  • @LifeDIY

    @LifeDIY

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, you have to clean the skin with alcohol prior to needling, whether you use numbing cream or not. It is drying, but it will be ok. I hate breathing it in though. And, I just prefer not to use numbing cream. It was very painful at first and it often is quite painful when doing treatments (just certain areas like the forehead) but I am kind of used to it now.

    In addition to hyaluronic acid, would it not also make sense to brush on liquid vitamin C and liquid copper peptides to penetrate into the small wounds, as these also help produce collagen.

    It does make sense and many practitioners use these things. But, then many others caution against vitamin C due to a small risk of granulomas.

I need to know if we need to change the needles and if not, how can we disinfect the needles after every use.. What to apply before and after using dermapen.

    Hi Madhuri, thanks for subscribing. :) In the description of the video, I link to the hyaluronic acid serum I use when needling. It is a great product. Also, after every use, I throw away the cartridge and then when I do another treatment, I use a new cartridge. The needle cartridge should be thrown after after one use. :) I highly recommend a channel called Penn Smith Skincare on youtube - if you need to learn more and do more research on microneedling - because she is a trained expert and has some awesome videos. I hope they might help you too!

    Yes! I usually have a small cup with high strength alcohol in it and I will submerge the cartridge in it. I dries pretty quickly. Some people also rinse it with water after that and begin. Otherwise I would use a spray alcohol and spray it and do the same thing.

    Em, so sorry for the late reply. I think you may want to ask Penny this on her channel. But, I can share my opinion and experience here though. I used to get absurdly red and inflamed from microneedling. Now when I do it, I sometimes barely get red at all. What depth did you do? Even if I go deeper now, I barely get red. I don't think it means you are doing anything wrong. You may want to try with the 12 pin cartridge though. Have you seen any results yet? Did you get any flaking or dry skin the week after the treatment? And, did it hurt during the treatment? Maybe your skin is just not super sensitive and can handle this needling injury a bit better, not causing a lot of redness. My skin usually gets red from everything. But, it has become used to the treatment where I now barely get red but I still get results. :)

Three areas I want to focus on and need the correct depth are under the eyes and in the marionette lines around the mouth and also the lines right between the eyes, the "11" lines.

  • @LifeDIY

    @LifeDIY

    4 жыл бұрын

    When doing the procedure, only hyaluronic acid is used. And, it's the only thing I use for the first few days after - usually 3 days, sometimes 2 (professionals recommend waiting 3 days before resuming with other products). Then after that I will use my normal serums - like the Buffet from the Ordinary and a little avocado oil too. You can definitely treat problem areas instead of the whole face - that is a great idea. :)

    Hi Sara, I have a link in the description to the hyaluronic acid I've been using and it's recommended by an estetitian also, as it just has some great pure ingredients. The day after my treatment, I tend to use things that are super healing - so I use avocado oil mixed with a hyaluronic acid serum and then I will also use emu oil. But, any soothing oil should be fine to use. The Emu oil I buy is from Platinum Skincare.

    I use numbing cream and put saran wrap on those areas to numb them. Wipe of the area with a cotton ball soaked in water, use a serum to get a slip, but do not take off other areas with saran wrap so cream does not dry.

    Really? I haven't tried doing my face yet and the numbing cream was just delivered. On other videos I watched it said to completely remove the numbing cream and wash the face very well to be sure its all removed and then sanitize. They said it would stay numb for something like an hour. But I don't want to find out the hard way that they are wrong. And that's a very small bottle so I'm thinking it probably won't last for many treatments.
