How I Made My Own RFID tag - From Shenzhen, China to New York City

Ғылым және технология

When I took apart the RFID tag from the cashierless store I ran across in Yiwu, China, my friend Stuart challenged me to try and make my own RFID tag. And it sent me on adventure that took me around the world, to meet some really amazing people!

    I understood about 1/10th of this video, but what I do understand is that the hacker spirit I witnessed in the 90s and early 2000s has not died. Really cool that an ali-express salesperson, a youtuber, and an RFID company could come together for no reason but curiosity and scientific creativity. Great video.

    Very helpful video! I have a question, can you power a 125khz passive rf id tag with external power supply and make it brocade its id to the receiver from a couple meters away?or it has to be its antenna with in the range of the field of the reader ? Thank you very much.

    @@Clear_precisition I know i might be a tad late for this, and you probably already found this out - including from this very video, it was mentioned but not very clearly worded, they may have oversimplified things a fair bit - but you can not. There is no separate power and antenna. Power connection IS the antenna connection. Furthermore power is integral to the transmission method. Power is also signal fundamentally in RFID. What the RFID reader does fundamentally is generate a frequency and power the antenna with it. Then it measures how much power is being consumed by the antenna circuit in discrete time intervals, and this power consumption reading over time IS the signal. To transmit the signal, the tag chip selectively shunts the antenna through a variable resistance. So it's transmitting by drawing either a little current or deliberately a lot more current over specific time periods. The RFID tag chip is incapable of generating its own radio signal, all the radio signal comes from the reader. You can maybe read up more on this under the keyword "backscatter RF communication". Your next thought may be to take a powerful oscillator transmitter and put it in vicinity of the chip. What happens then, is that although the chip is powered, and the data is being broadcast, the reader electronics in the standard RFID reader doesn't know what to do with it, as it's not listening for RF signal, it's listening for its own current consumption in its RF coil, so it won't receive anything. Next step from there would be to create a custom RF receiver which is tuned to the frequency of RFID and doesn't transmit, which will easily register the carrier from even a substantial distance, you can reach 100m no problem, but then you run into another problem: the maximum current that the RFID tag chip can shunt is really not that high! So if you imagine this powerful carrier wave, that you can easily detect and measure from meters away, the fluctuation on top of it that constitutes the useful signal will be really tiny, and can get easily swamped by all sorts of urban RF noise. Things you can easily do it in an isolated chamber like the RF anechoic chamber they're testing with in this video, but not in a real even slightly urbanised environment. Which is not to say that these RFID tags cannot be read from a distance. Around 50-60cm is the range that you can get a number of commodity readers to, under fortunate circumstances. Fundamentally, a beam shaping reader can be created, that can detect tags at a given location from a larger distance, this is basically an antenna design challenge. What doesn't help is throwing power at the problem.

    UPDATE: That chat during the premiere was super fun! Thanks for the all the feedback - I'll likely tweak how we do it, but I think we'll do it again. Probably not for every video though. Hi all! This is my first time doing a premiere. I thought you guys would enjoy chatting with me before, during, and afterwards. I'm always at my computer when I launch a video, answering comments, so I figured I'd try out the premieres thing and make it a bit more realtime and interactive. If you're not into it, totally cool - this will turn into a regular video after the premiere, and you can watch it just like you normally do. Cheers!

    We don't have the option to toggle off premiers, sadly. So all a premier is, is a "gotchya!" or "psych!" when we thought we could watch a new video. I hope you don't use it again, it really only clutters up our subscription feed with videos we can't watch.

  • @SlartiMarvinbartfast

    @SlartiMarvinbartfast

    Scotty, it's fantastic that you want to interact with the people who enjoy your videos, but as you've probably noticed, listing the video as a Premiere hasn't gone down too well. :) I'm sure there are other ways to interact with your followers which won't aggravate them - do a Reddit AMA, host a chat on one of the many online chat services, and so on. Naturally, if this was a TV programme or a movie then people would be okay with it, we're all used to schedules, but with KZread videos they just "appear", they are always (usually!) just "there" - we don't expect them at any specific time, but advertising KZread videos in advance, with a time, is strange to most viewers.

Back in 2003, I had a Ericsson T10s phone and in one moment the place where the antenna is connected disappeared somewhere due to the fact the phone was hit by a ball into the a thick fog that was on that particular day. So, there was no way to fix it. So, what I did is I did took a book of Physics from high school and then calculated the length of the antenna needed for GSM network and then my phone worked way much better than the original antenna.

    I used to work for a company that uses RFID tags as an assistive technology for the blind community. A pharmacy would use a programmer to load the information about a prescription onto an RFID tag that would be attached to the prescription bottle or package. The tag would include the name of the prescription and prescribed dosage, prescriber info, number of refills remaining and any warnings assciated with the prescription. The blind patient would then use a tag reader to read back the information to them so they didn't have to rely on a sighted person to read it to them.

    Dude, i saw the presentation the dude gave about digging out his basement because his parents let him buy the mainframe, that was just awesome. I love how these companies invent stuff and have huge machines making things, and here you are jerry rigging one together. That said, the machines doe it smaller and faster and have a higher succes rate, but still. Peopel are getting smarter, geting together, getting curious, getting their stuff together, slowly but surely, in a few decades, governments will not be able to keep up. 'Almost Human', the tv-series that is a prequel to Blade Runner, is becoming more and more likely. I may not see the day, but chances are it will come. Though different techs at different times, we're ahead in some cases, likely centuries behind on others.

    This was immensely interesting and engaging. Scotty, you're a natural host and your editor does a great job. You found excellent interviewees too. Oh, and you guys did super well pacing a 40+ minute video about passive tags without it being boring haha. I only found myself getting more into the video the deeper I got in.

    A VPN won't work. it's at midnight in his time zone because it's a lets say 6pm in another time zone. So it premieres at the same time everywhere in the world, so a VPN isn't going to do anything unless your VPN has a time machine feature.
