Note: For those who’ve seen the individual videos already, here’s what’s new: Brand new introduction for the series, re-edited in quite a few places to improve quality (especially the first few videos when ya boi didn’t know how to keep a consistent aspect ratio) and to make it work as one continuous video, use of higher quality clips as well as additional joke edits, and the all-new ending credits sequence. See if you can spot all the changes! This should go without saying but a few things in here are now dated (GT Sophy, engine swaps, etc) but I still think it’s important to remember that at a certain point in time this was the exact situation for players in GT7 and overall my points are still relevant. I don’t know why I’m even mentioning this because I’ll still get comments about it anyway. Bruh.

@@Mikauo_Xblade both. Horizon 1 was amazing but increasingly went further and further to the hypercasual market, compromising any depth. Personally, not a fan of where horizon decided to go, but it's where the audience was so I can't blame them, though there are still genuine problems that go beyond their target audience. Problem is that motorsport saw the success of horizon and tried to follow it. The hyper casual market isn't as interested in track racers. They sacrificed the depth of motorsport 4 and ignored their existing audience to appeal to one that didn't want them.

I don't think they've fallen to a similar state, their problems are different, and furthermore, the problems of Forza Motorsport - some of which they seem to be aware of, although it remains to be seen if they will be addressed - are not the same as the problems of Forza Horizon (personally, I didn't have any with FH4, which I thought was a big improvement on FH3, but I haven't touched FH5 yet).

I have no idea how they look at previous games and remove everything that was great and keep the trash and add the trash to the next game and say it’s the good old GT that everybody wants, at this point this is all about GT sport online with a few races tacked on, if all the tracks and cars have been made how hard would it really be to listen to us in the community and add a BUNCH of DIFFERENT championships for us to race with equal payouts so that the grind isn’t so damn boring doing the same 3 races over and over to gain 20million is the worst thing imaginable!! if my maths is correct it will take about 13hours of the same 30min race without breaks and finishing at the 30min mark earning the most per min of 825k to get 1 car that I can’t use in any event, what’s the point??? Seriously what is the point, it’s not like the cars add any value to my collectors club either as it caps at lv 50!!!! I have played all of the GT games including the spin off tourist trophy and unless it drastically changes via updates I won’t be returning to the franchise, the golden era of GT is sadly gone and dosent look like it’s coming back RIP GT

And I’d argue a lot of people know exactly what they wanted GT7 to be, considering it was marketed as a return to the series’ roots. But to this day, it still doesn’t do a good job of that. The short and poorly designed single-player that doesn’t even hold a candle to GT3’s or GT4’s is one of the biggest examples.

I think the way they ruined car collecting has gotta be my biggest complaint. It's like they concentrated way too much on car values and trying to replicate the real world car market, and completely forgot about why people enjoy collecting cars in games in the first place. We don't do it because we enjoy trying to collect a ton of virtual currency and spend it, we do it because we want to check out and drive a wide variety of cars. When lots of cars are basically locked behind unobtainable goals, it really ruins our ability to enjoy what the game could have to offer.

About the AI, If I remember correctly Kaz actually wanted to ditch single player for a long time. I believe Sony forces them to have something otherwise noone would buy it, and at best PD half-asses it, and at worst they actively sabotage it. The artificial pace slowing clock is a hint I believe. Like, you programmed it to be better than this, why would you deliberately rubberband it to go slower and extend the grid to make it at best underwhelming and at worst encouraging you to turn your Gr. 3 to a lawnmower.

PS: This would also explain the whole mess the career structure is now, it's not like PD couldn't design a better one, they either don't care or they are sabotaging it directly, and by stating in the marketing "GT IS BACK" probably they want to alienate newer customers to the concept and sweep a career mode under the rug. I know, it sounds like a conspiracy theory, but I can't shake off this thought.

This series has been incredible. Your critique on Gran Turismo 7 highlights my gripes on modern racing games as a whole; they always have one downside that ruins the game for me. It is honestly so depressing to see AAA developers in the racing genre to not even try to make a good racing game anymore. It's just "pHySiCs AnD gRaPhIcS" and that's it. This is insulting. Ever since I played Gran Turismo 4 when I was 8-years-old, it capture me into the world of cars and video games. Learning different car brands and their nationality, how cars work and how to drive them. It all return back to Gran Turismo 4. If it wasn't for GT4, I wouldn't be playing video games right now, but seeing the industry and their communities nowadays, I'm not even sure I would want to continue playing games. ==OFFTOPIC== I've always dreamt of making my own racing game; one that combines many features from many fan favourites into one package. I've been debating that if I can do this, but after seeing the state of the racing genre, I figure I might as well as do it now. Yours, Raycevick's, Kacey's and Ultra Violet's critiques on modern racing games motivates me to try out this project. I know it will be a daunting task, but I will try to make this dream a reality. Even if it takes me months, years or even a decade, I will finish my dream game. --Sorry if this comes off as cringy--

@nynameisnyan20 Thank you so much for the reply. As for the game, my main issue is the physics model. I have been debating whenever to make one from scratch or use one that is premade. I'm not planning to make a simulator since we already have many of those; more like an arcade circuit racer similar to Race Driver: GRID. Besides the physics, most of the concepts are ready so I'm ready for development, except for the story (Yes, my game will have a story mode. A bit too ambitious, but doable).

I love the gran turismo series. You were right about some of the points in the video about wanting to be wrong about the future of GT - wanting to be proven wrong etc. The recent change in allowing Engine swaps and the ultimate tuning shop is a small grain of change that reduces the toxicity of the spins and makes the game better. It’s a heavy dose of copium but I do think PD just might have realised the colossal direction change required, at the very least they know they can’t do this again. Great Video so far! How to fix Gran Turismo 7 (and how it should have been launched). Take what there already is, add a few more high credit races, give you more freedom with the opening car choice, and change the single player. The game should have had standard championships like those in the previous GT games, and add the menu books as an additional side objective that you can do if you want an easier time, or are just learning how GT works. The dealerships should change the old way, after each event, and the cars should have a standard price. They should not ever reach up to 20,000,000, it's ridiculous, and any cars that are incredibly expensive should have their own races.

And also fix car invitation rewards to make them easier to obtain by certain collector level and not rely on gacha roulette RNG, or just remove the car invite mechanics at all, it gets repetitive when you have to wait another day and grind 26.8 miles per hour every day and you still don't get an invitation. I keep getting the same brand invites on cars I've already obtained like Bugatti and Pagani. I wanted a Porsche and Ferrari but never got one. Especially we noticed after recent new car updates monthly the devs knew they never wanted to add another Invitation-only car because it was not well received by fans. Even the latest update finally gave us the option to purchase engine swaps and ultimate parts (though you need to reach a certain collector level) rather than relying on gacha roulette RNG's which is pretty stupid honestly

3:12:30 "I think a game which functions as a virtual car museum, is probably what they're aiming for. So why not lean into that more?" That got me thinking. Instead of it being some random cafe the player is taking pretty pictures of cars for. (At the expense of their own wallet, no less.) What if the game framed the player as the co-owner of an automotive museum? (Alongside a character who helps to guide new players.) And you race for the sake of promoting the museum. And instead of the linear menu books that straight up give you the cars needed by just playing specific events tied to them. All to just take a picture of them... The museum would of course want cars to put up on display. And so like the menu books, you'd have a set of cars to get ahold of. Except you would have multiple of these sets available at any given time, and how you acquire the needed cars is up to you. Wether that is buying them from a dealer, winning them as a price car, or even going to an auction for rare cars. Some of these sets could also just have requirements that the cars have to fulfill, instead of specific cars. Such as "4 modern hot hatches" or "2 hyper cars". And as you complete these sets, the museum "levels up", and gives you access to new sets to complete for the museum. As well as extra rewards, such as money, a price car, etc. And completing a lot of sets that involve specific manufacturers, could also be how you unlock their invites. If one were to have that mechanic in the game still. One could even have a set with no restrictions, were a player can show off some of their cars to other players when they look at one's profile/museum. Then near the end of the campaign, there could even be a large championship that would be held by the museum. Like a final challenge! I think this would be a lot more fun and engaging for the players. Since they would have a ton more choice about how to go through the game's campaign. And without changing that whole "virtual car museum" idea that GT's director seemed so focused on for GT7. Because the game would straight up be about a car museum, and how that affects the reason for the player to go through the game's various races. This of course doesn't touch the ai, the fact a lot of cars are pointless within the game, the lack of event variety. But when it comes to the campaign's basis, this honestly sounds much more interesting and fun, than just grinding through menu books and watching cutscenes were character's I don't care about ramble on and on about history... Also I have never played any GT before. I used to be much more of a Forza player, but then FH4 happened... But I still hope these ideas of mine still sound interesting to the GT community.

My conspiracy theory is that they initially wanted to charge real money for roulette spins, but had to pivot due to regulatory push-back regarding gambling in video games. I don't have any proof, but it succinctly justifies all these anti-fun design decisions. Look at how they nerfed race payouts after the post-launch outcry. Did they do something similar with the roulette and invitation system? Idk how this can be so mismanaged. F*ck Kaz for being in charge of this franchise. It is a fantastic video.

They coulda done a few things that woulda been cool with some of the GT7 changes: - Add a special bonus questionaire to gain a credit bonus that race where the info is found in Cafe or something... but knowledge without application doesn't do much. - There is a TON of GT staple races that don't exist even after a year on the market in GT7. - Sport Mode I think should have to be unlocked, but it could have been unlocked differently with more thought. (Sportsmanship Test Races, open up Race A/B/C seperately with license. etc/etc) - The AI in solo mode is horrifying, as is the fact there is no Qual, no standing starts... - There is a TON of inconsistancies in the livery editor and custom parts, from defaulting your interior color based on paint change(new NSX in red), to 2 piece wheels that get fully painted as 1 unit, when in every other GT that wheel was clearly a polished lip even after altering color...buying the paints is a pain, because there is no filters, and finally wtf with carbon fiber.... serious. That's heinous that once you try to add carbon... no more special colors. You cannot make decal metallic. And there is no individual texture per decal... instead it decides that ALL your decals are that texture once changed. The windsheild banners are often not using the entire space and cut you off.

I'm afraid it's not as simple as that. I have huge nostalgia for Gt4, but as a game I think it's severely flawed. Were kunos able and willing to make a gt competitor, they should take inspiration from a lot of other places as well, specifically codemasters. Like in grid autosport, if you weren't able to win every time, the game would start expecting you to just do well in the midfield, which is a much more interesting place to be than the front of the pack. 1nsane(I know, made by invictus, published by codies) had so many wacky game modes and maps that would be impossible to do in real life but still were tons of fun as a kid. F1 2021 gave you goals during practice sessions that would (in theory) better prepare you for the race and give you development bonuses for the team. And the seemingly hardest part, having decent AI is already close to completion, because AI in ACC, while hardly perfect, is still some of the better I've seen in a sim

@@bartekkko Yeah I agree. I said just straight up copy GT4 because it would be miles better than any of the offerings we have had in the last 5 years. To take inspiration from more old racing games, what about the snow from project cars 2? Whilst maybe not the most realistic, it was a fun and unique feature, as you could take an LMP1 car for a spin (figuratively and literally) in the snow. The whole team building idea from GRID and F1 2021 is also pretty intriguing. I never played GRID, but I did play a bit of F1 2021. I thought it was a pretty well implemented feature, and with the abilities to branch out to other categories of racing, it would be a good game mode. Whilst B-Spec mode imo is pretty boring, since it's more of a managment mode (although it was pretty fun as a kid because me and a friend just set the drivers out to be as aggresive as a polar bear on LSD), combined with the team mode, it allows you to train the drivers up to become the best. If I remember correctly Forza Motorsport 1 had a similar feature, but you actually trained the AI by driving yourself. Kind of like a Chat GPT driver, where it regurgetates information from your driving. The special events from Gran Turismo 5 were also pretty fun. One time you got NASCAR training from Jeff Gordon (ok AC doesn't have the budget to do that), I remember a race on Tuscan roads in a yellow Murcielago and it was so dark you had to turn the blue racing line on to just see where the track went.

I think it's not only racing games, past 10 years everything in gaming is dumbed down, made fool proof with retardated HUD's and objective markers removing any sense of independent exploration and accomplishment, all aiming to appeal to the most common denominator thereby appealing to noone. And to draw that even broader, it's not only racing games or games in general, it's just also society as a whole, dumbed down, looking for a challenge is a vice nowadays.

I found it so frustrating to be handed cars hand over fist, and never being able to drive any one car for very long, because after two races it wouldn't be viable for the next set of races. I got absolutely no sense of progression from this game. You said it best when you likened it to an extended tutorial. That's all it was, and then when it was all over, it didn't seem like there was anything left to do. I love Sport mode, but I want a compelling single player too.

In my opinion Forza Motorsport 4 had the perfect balance of fun and prestige. The cars were celebrated beautifully but still came across as epic, rather than pretentious. Same goes for the music. The campaign, while not quite as deep as previous entries, was well paced and offered engine AND drivetrain swaps. Nothing was locked behind a weird wall and cars and money was constantly thrown at you.

GT4, for me, just has this sense of progression and collection that I've never felt in other games. Sure I might be grinding for money, but I'm also making progress while I grind. I'm building a connection to the cars I'm using. I'm seeing that percentage complete number slowly going up with every race and I feel like while I'm in for a long ride, it's going to be a lot of fun. I feel accomplished with every single race and upgrade. It's almost like an RPG. Maybe that's why I enjoy the Import Tuner Challenge game (and it's predecessors) as much as I do. The single player is a story. Not in the traditional sense, but in that you're making your own story. You and your car are embarking on this epic journey together. Racing games now days have lost their soul.

I own all the main games from when they were available in their respective day. I don't remember the game being available (in the uk) in 1997.. my memory says May 1998. My time playing gt7 is about as long as i can take watching this video, 10 to 15 mins (it's sunny outside rn) lol. However, unlike gt7, i will be back soon, popping in and out, as and when i have time. I really appreciate your reviews greatly but 3 and a half hours, man alive 😂 ✌

I have been meaning to comment on this video for a while. This is a phenominal documentry on the downfall of Gran Turismo. Gran Turismo 4 was the 1st video game I have ever played (not racing game video game) and I still maintain that it is the greatest video game ever created. It was the leading racing game for its time and still has many of the values that Kaz still has Graphics, handling, immersion but more importantly it has one thing that is sadly lacking in alot of modern games Fun. I remember seeing the first clips of GT7 and feeling so hyped for it and I said to myself I will buy a PS5 purely for GT7. However Now that I know what I know I am holding off on that untill the game is in a much better State. I got Gt Sport literally just as GT7 came out so I didn't know there wasn't a single player campain in GT Sport until you mentioned it. So I didn't know the problems were so deep rooted until your video They clearly have so much tunnel vision in the direction of realism that that will sacrifice fun for the sake of making it real. The greatest example of this is the Track redesigns, Why they felt the need to bucher some of the most iconic Tracks I have no idea, whist I appreceated and admire the effort for realism it has made the game worst. Something I have also noticed is that Every problem in GT7 has a solution existing in the past games, the only reason I can think as to why they aren't used is because Kaz is so focused on looking forward that he does even remember these solutions (or at least doesn't acknowledge that they would fix the problems). Kaz and Polyphony need a major kick up the backside if they want to recreate the glory days of Gran Turismo 4 and I do think that people like you have given them that. I do have a very small amount of Hope for this game mainly because of what they did with the Engine swaps that was probably the first time they actually did exactly want we ask them for (without this I would have probably just ignored them if I had the game). It shows atleast some acknowagement of their flaws and hopefuly will lead to them realising the monumental change in direction needed to made this game good. Thank you for this documentry Roflwaffle you have expressed the vast majoraty of my and many other player of these games. PS your choice of music for the Credits could not have been better, a clear call back to GT1 but also reflects how we feel as players and how we want to give Polyphony a second chance. Well done. Really. Well done.

to me, the greatest problem is that Kazunori isn't a game designer and isn't interested in gaming. This leads to a producer trying to be an auteur of something that barely works as a game and falls way short of being the all encompassing realizations of his ideas because no hardware, resources and time will be enough to reach that. I don't want to give up on the charm some of PD's decisions bring to the table and that are completely unique, but I would also welcome some more rational and logical design choices being made by people who understand gaming and motorsports (and, no, sorry, whoever designed Gran Turismo racing aspect doesn't and I would go as far as to say never went to a race)

I watched pretty much the whole video yesterday and I finished it this morning, and I must say you did an amazing job! I just stumbled across your channel a couple days ago and I have seen a bunch of your videos already, they are very interesting to watch! I am a fm player at heart but I had a ps3 and gt5 back in the day(which I had a lot of fun with) and I bought a ps4 pro just to play gt7 (and spiderman lol) and I must say, I havent touched the game in months and I kinda regret getting it. I agree with every point you make! Starting at the back of the pack with the cars spread out over half the track is probably my biggest gripe with the single player, especially since I’m used to standing starts in forza. Also the menu books I got bored with, it just felt like a chore and I never was able to develop a relationship with the cars. I really want the new fm to be a good game, but my expectations are low so I won’t get dissapointed.

A bit late to the party, but here's my thoughts and experience with GT7 : I bought it almost day one, and I saw a lot of these problems since. Btw your videos are really well made and goes indeed into details I didn't think of at the time, so thank you for that. But what's truly unfortunate in my case is, regardless of the quality of GT7, this game still speaks to me, as an enthusiast. I mean, I almost played it on daily basis, even if I did pretty much the same things (Scapes mode, making liveries, driving around in freeroam lobbies, and so on). I could also talk about how my playtrought was quite full of small victories, like, when I saw that, with the new customisation system, the AE86 got an actual N2 body kit instead of a basic fender extension. Same story with the 2000 GT-R. It's a small detail, but I was really happy to see it. And I was really exited when they annouced the return of the R30 Skyline Super Silhouette, a car that I love, both in its stock form and its Gr.4 form. But It was no use. Even if I'm in a point of my life where my passion for cars (especially JDM) is pretty much unstoppable, slowly but surely I started to.... lose interest. As I said, as an enthusiast I could continue, but as a player, it was just no it overall and I even started to no like things that are quite good in the game, like missions. One of my many breaking points was Kaz interview, where of all of the thing he could say, claimed for example that the Chaser/JZX100 is not relevant anymore..... Yeah, it's not like this is one of the most influencial JDM car ever, got specific drift events in Japan dedicated to this one platform even to this day, and is featured in one of the most iconic moment of the D1 Grand Prix (also entirely sponsored by Gran Turismo in recent times btw.... And still no D1GP content to be see in the game....). It just feels like, somehow, Kaz doesn't even go out in his own country. Japan's cars enthusiasts scene is still thriving, you don't need to do a lot to understand that. And yet he came to this kind of conclusions...... Frankly, I still don't really understand. There was other factors to why I gave up (like, I recently got my first gaming PC for example), but nothing to wrote home about. As of now, I'm pretty much on same page as you. I will keep an eye on GT7, but in any case, I do think it's kind of too late and, as the meme said, "It's Joever". Forza Motorsports reboot is in the horizon but honestly, i'm not really hyped in any ways. Some aspects of the game looks already meh to me but, y'know, we'll see at lauch, as always. I will always love Gran Turismo, and I hope I will, one day, get my hand on the older titles, but for now.... I'm just gonna wait. But it's sad. Really Sad. So that's it, I probably forgot a lot of stuff that I wanted to wrote about, and I probably made some grammatical mistakes since i'm not a native english speaker X) But anyway, if anyone happen to read that, thank you very much. And thank you very much for your effort Roflwaffle, keep up the good work :)

I hate it, but can't help but agree. Even the UI in GT Sport's VR mode being custom-made for *offline, single-player-only* use was left completely unchanged for competitive racing & multiplayer *exclusive* to the "full VR mode" in GT7 on the PSVR2, leaving out inherently critical race data (albeit data which wasn't necessary for offline, single-player time trials in GT Sport's VR mode). Yesterday I got an invitation from Porsche to buy a rare Carerra GT... *which I already own from a previous invitation.* So much of it just feels "mailed in" like this, like they lost interest or weren't inherently interested in making a full standalone game unique from GT Sport; GT7 is essentially GT Sport 2.0, but it's not necessarily better for it in spite of the upgrades.

What an excellent video essay! I have so many thoughts about the game, i don't even know where to begin, so i guess i'm gonna start writing, and edit in later the things i forgot... *About the always online single player* In my opinion, PD's reasoning of "players might cheat their online ratings" is a load of bullshit. Honestly, who fucking cares? The moment a cheater enters an online race with actual pros, everybody will know what's up. Imagine Valve announce, that you can't use Steam offline anymore, because people using achievment unlockers for Team Fortress 2 is a huge issue for some reason. Not to mention, that with this decision, they just slapped an artificial expiration day to the game. If i remember correctly from the server outage days, the only thing you can do without a connection are custom races with a couple of pre-selected cars. You can't even access your own cars, so prepare to say goodbye to your 20 mil classic cars (and countless hours of grinding) once the next game comes out! *About the inflated car prices* PD seems to imply that they did this, because it's realistic. Which i mean, it is, but i don't play a driving sim, because i like to be reminded, that i'm never gonna afford my favorite cars from my childhood, because many of them are just investment assets in some rich guy's garage. If Polyphony wants to bring in some more realistic elements of car ownership, then i'm looking forward to dealing with insurance, property taxes, mandatory inspection, rust, and car theft in GT8...
