How I Learned Fluent Spanish in 20 Days From My Apartment

Ойын-сауық

This is the story of how I learned to speak fluent Spanish in 20 days from my apartment. It began with a challenge 30 days ago to learn how to speak Spanish, and this is my final video in that challenge series - it’s been 30 days total and 20 days of actual study time. My Spanish definitely is not perfect but I do feel like I’m at a level where I can speak fluently. You decide!

I am from Holland and here we are taught English from lower school, so I am learning spanish in my free time now. It takes indeed a lot of time and effort, but it's worth it. I don't believe you can speak fluently in 20 days, he memorized phrases for this video and practiced it. I bet if you talk about a random subject in your kitchen or objects in detail he couldn't do it, or perfectly translate articles from El País for example. That level of Spanish is much harder. It's not possible to learn a language this quick, but maybe i have a different definition of fluently though..

It makes me sad that people are discouraged by this video or comparing their own process to it. Did you all hear any crazy tenses or double pronouns? Nothing. He’s a “fluent” beginner. This hobby (language learning) is tough enough without constantly comparing ourselves to KZread “experts”. Enjoy your process! Remembering why you’re doing it. And know that each time you go to practice you are improving.

You're right, Chicago rose but I guess it is the way of the beginning or the non learner. We constantly question whether we have enough time, energy, or skill to do something like this, when actually see someone do something like this. All of us can do a lot of what he did and get great results. The problem is, we have to do the work and stop comparing ourselves to people.

Not trying to minimize his progress because learning Spanish for 20 days and reaching the level he did is very impressive in and of itself! I feel that "speaking" and "being fluent" in a language are thrown around too often though on KZread without really paying too much attention to the actual competence required to call yourself fluent. At level B2, you are considered to have a "basic fluency", and while you'll still make grammatical mistakes, you will need to be able to discuss a wide range of topics with a native speaker at this level. Anyone who has learned a language knows that during the initial period of learning a foreign language, you seem to progress rapidly as you see yourself go from 0 to being able to have a basic conversation in that language. It's going from B1 to B2 that takes far more time and then going from B2 to C1 that seems to take an immense amount of time. Speaking about learning languages is a pretty common topic for polyglots when they're proving their skills and for good reason! It's a topic that comes up quite often with native speakers and it's why many have reached a 'fluent' level in terms of discussing their language learning journey. It was a huge shock to me when I learned my first foreign language. I felt so confident speaking about a select few topics (e.g. how and why I learned Portuguese, my background, etc.) and then when I arrived in Brazil, it was incredibly humbling to see how few topics I was actually fluent in. I wish that more KZreadrs that claim they're fluent in a language actually provide proof (i.e. a certification) because that's a pretty big claim to make. It seems to discourage a ton of language learners who haven't made nearly the same amount of progress speaking Spanish for a few years, for example. It's fairly easy to appear fluent in a select few topics, prepare your script, and then upload a video speaking a number of languages. Sorry for rambling ;)

I have the sensation that most people could get to a similar level within a similar, limited amount of time if the *definition of fluency* is a self-determined and edited video of jump cuts. I've seen similar language-centered youtubers like Ikenna, and there is a big difference of communication and confidence when speaking to people *in real time* to what he does in front of a camera. I would with my own experience of having learned two languages besides my native one, say that being able to speak and understand a language fluently is something so *incredibly vast* . Like being able to watch documentaries, read news articles or even write something like this without having to translate words during the process. So, please dont try to sell us a fantasy like it was the pill from the movie limitless. But I wont lie, the title is tempting, I even bought it myself. And good job/idea of learning spanish by the way, you're very good. And very useful language!

Remember, "fluent" is not the same level as mastery or native-level speaking. He speaks very well for a beginner but languages take years to master: one learns grammar, vocabulary, poetry (its form is often very different to the spoken version), slang, references/metaphors/allegories etc. You can do what he did by memorizing 200 words in any language then make up basic sentences.

@papasitoman, Fluency is not beginner, nor is it basic sentences. The DLI has Spanish, which is one of the easiest languages for English speakers as 36 weeks (9 Months) and at 7 hrs. a day, that is about 1260 hrs. of in class study. That does not include the encouraged use of the language outside of class and eventual immersion after the course. This is to reach fluency. This is one of the most intense ways to acquire a language, for actual fluency, since it determines if people can attain a career for their livelihood. This KZreadr Xiaoma would not pass an interview, nor would he be able to go to school if the medium of instruction was solely in Spanish. In Canada there is even a program for immigrants to take a course about three months long and also seven hours a day for French. That is considered just the basics of conversational language to find a menial job and not a career.

Probably not. The previous video where he was on zoom with the native speakers is probably where he is at still for the most part. I do agree about the splicing and rehearsing to say these sentences quickly being very misleading about how fluent he actually is and can be discouraging to people like me who are still learning and have been learning much longer. But, we still must commend him for his consistency and effort in this short amount of time. He still understands a lot and takes the effort to practice with people consistently. That is what messes me up, I don't use Spanish and am too embarrassed to speak it with native speakers often, which I'll have to get over if I want to get any better. So I still commend him and admire that tenacity he has. But don't let this discourge you who are still learning. Your journey is your own and how much, how fast. Great progress! A few pointers: -'definitivamente' means 'definitively', not 'definitely'. A better word would be 'seguramente'. -avoid using 'yo'. It sounds like you're contrasting yourself (e.g. 'yo puedo hablar' = 'I, and not someone else, can speak'). It's more natural to just say 'puedo hablar'. -Try to pronounce 'd' especially as a 'th' sound like in the word 'the' rather than as an English 'd'. What ends up happening is that since the English 'd' is pronounced with the tongue against the alveolar ridge instead of against the teeth, we tend to make it sound like a Spanish 'r' sound. So, when you say 'pude' at about 1:30 it sounds like you're saying 'pure', and this can make you a bit hard to understand.

To anyone thinking he's a mastermind about learning languages: he isn't. That isn't because he's a god, he's using techniques that everyone can use. Most people don't learn a language after 5 years of trying because they're learning it incorrectly. I've been learning italian, french and portuguese during the quarantine. I also passively learned english without *ever* learning grammar. I'm spanish native. You can get to xioma's level of spanish by doing 2 things: 1- speaking with people, and 2- using google translate. Expose yourself to the culture, listen to the music and videos of the people. A great topic of conversation is to ask natives for their favorite content in the language. Pra tudos os que não achan que eu posso falar português, estou escrevendo isto sem usar google translate. E estou aprendendo dois outros idiomas ao mesmo tempo que português. Everyone can learn any language if you use the right technique. Xioma just used a fantastic technique for spanish. I can say his grammar is 95% perfect, and his accent, while undoubtedly north american, is very easy to understand. Felicidades Xiaoma, si querés poner a prueba tu español te recomiendo que intentes hablar con argentinos, chilenos y paraguayos. Tenemos los acentos mas diferentes comparados con los usuales, que serian los mejicanos y españoles.

agreed.. i already see the difference between my english and my german and i've studied both (my 1st language is dutch) however since i basically grew up with english all around i quickly understood it without any schooling in it. for german i only got it in school and apart from the things that are very similar to dutch (wich can also make it quite confusing because for example the dutch word for sea is the german word for lake and vice versa) but because i've only had it in school despite my aptitude for learning languages it's at the level of a primary schooler because the way we were taught wasn't a useful way for me.. if you throw a book to me and tell me to learn from that i'll read it then my brain will almost instantly dump half of it out.. but if i actually get to hear and speak the language i'll easily pick up sentences and loose words.. i've already learned a suprising amout of japanese and korean from just watching anime and k-drama's.. even movies.. to a point where a while back i was watching the grudge and there is this once scene in one of the movies where a schoolgirl is called to (i think) the principal and the principal asks her where the missing girls went because she was like their friend and she is just like sorry i don't know i haven't seen them since yesterday (or something along those lines basically it was a while back and i'm bad at remembering the specific things someone said.. i think in pictures) and i literally paused the movie and went huh.. there were no subtitles but i understood it without issue..

Stunning video! Many thanks to the author of the channel for the recommendations! The problem with many people is that they want to take a "magic pill" or get "secret knowledge" and immediately have skills and abilities. However, the truth of life is that knowledge, skills, and abilities do not come by themselves. You can't learn a foreign language without doing anything, without wasting your time and effort, just like you can't learn to ride a bike lying on a comfy couch, listening to lectures and watching videos about "modern methods of learning" on a bike. To really learn something, you have to really practice every day. You're going to fall down while you're learning, and you're going to get bumps - that's normal! The ups and downs of learning are an integral part of our lives. Motivation from success and depression from failure will always be your study companions. However, every student has problems in his or her studies that he or she lacks the knowledge to solve. It can be: poor memorization of words; no progress in language learning; the student can speak, but does not understand speech by ear; misunderstanding of grammar; incorrect pronunciation, etc. Agree that a problem you don't know how to solve is very demotivating. In order to find the answer to our question we have to spend a lot of time to read videos, articles and books by polyglots. In today's world, we have to solve problems as quickly as possible. I don't have time to study and analyze a huge amount of information. My goal is to master the basic knowledge of a foreign language as quickly as possible and already start earning money effectively in the international arena. I settled on the practical guide by Yuriy Ivantsiv " Polyglot's Notes: practical tips for learning foreign language". This book is always in my bag. If I have a problem while learning a language, I quickly find the answer in this book. There are many different techniques and tips for learning a foreign language in Polyglot Notes. I have made my own individual schedule and plan for language learning. Now I know what I am going to study, how I am going to study, when I am going to study and what results I am going to achieve. No problem could stop me! With an effective language learning plan my professional skills are more and more in demand internationally every day. Friends, don't stop there! Everyone has talents that millions of people around the world need! Learn the language and make your ideas and dreams come true! Thanks to the author of the channel for the informative and useful video! Your videos motivate me.

I completely agree 100% about the fact that you can learn a language in a month, but, there's a catch. You can do it, if it's an easy language like Spanish, or it's a language of the same family of the language you already speak. And I say this because I know this by first hand. I'm Catalan and I speak five languages, Catalan (my mother tongue), Spanish (since I was around 3 years old), English (fluently since I was 15-16), Italian (since I was 21) and Portuguese (since I was 23). I learnt Italian and Portuguese during two different ERASMUS Scholarships. I lived in Rome for two months in 2016 and two months in Lisbon in 2018 (plus, this time, studying the language one month prior). I could understand Italian and Portuguese since the day one, cause those languages are romance languages, just like Catalan and Spanish. If you are curious about how speakers from romance languages can understand each other only by using their own mother tongue (no English allowed) you should check the Ecologist KZread Channel, here you have a link: kzread.info/head/PLQJ3IAEluGMjuLXkJ3M3zbdutw38BInsv Anyway, my point is that I was able to understand the languages from the beginning and, it took me a month to speak Italian fluently and then only around two weeks to speak Portuguese fluently. Te felicito por tu gran comproniso, porque veo que te ha dado sus frutos. ¡Sigue Así! ¡Recuerdos desde Barcelona!
