I get a lot of satisfaction from taking an old chunk of wood and turning it into a useful piece of art;
Something that someone will enjoy using for years to come.
From the time I was a kid, I always picked up a walking stick before heading out for a hike.
As much as I use walking sticks, it just seemed natural for me to start carving them.
I've been carving them, now, for years; and I've got to say, its the most enjoyable job I've ever had.
I've had the opportunity to make some really fun projects for folks all over the country.
But, if it hadn't have been for the encouragement of an old wood carver, known as, Mountain Man, I probably would have given up a long time ago.
He bought my first walking stick from me.
It isn't much to look at, but its the one that got me started.
He told me I needed to carve ten of them.
He said by then I'd know what I was doing.
So, I started carving!
I'm glad I took the old timer's advice.
By the time I'd finished my tenth stick, I'd learned a lot from all the mistakes that I had made.
I've got to say; I owe him a lot for urging me to keep on carving.
Mountain Man would come down just about every week to see the progress I was making on my latest
projects.
I really enjoyed visiting with him while I carved.
Today, I'm carving my 86th walking stick.
In his later years, Mountain Man spent most of his time buying and selling shed deer and
elk antlers.
So I'm making this cane in memory of my old friend.
The one who inspired me to #stickwithit!
Sometimes a word of encouragement is all it takes to get a person started doing the thing that he really
enjoys.
Thanks, Mountain Man!

Your sticks get more beautiful every time I see another one. I can see in 50 years time there being a collection of them in a museum somewhere like the Guggenheim, the Louvre, the Smithson or the Getty. I hope you have taken photographs of all the sticks you have made. They are definitely works of art and I am so happy I have seen them being created. Thank you.

Sad but fantastic tribute to your friend. I’m sure he’s always looking over you waiting for your next creation to come alive. God Bless!
Everyone practicing an art needs someone like Mountain Man to get the creative juices flowing. Thanks, Mike for sharing and great video!
Such a great story, I feel the love for mountain man. Much respect. I'm carving my first own walking stick. And your videos are what brought me to it and keep me motivated. Thanks for shoving the complete carving process. I enjoy seeing the raw material it was, having pearl choose the right wood to work on, and how you continue to this fabulous work of art. Loved every second of it. Thank you

Wonderful story and very amazing work you do! It’s always a joy to watch these videos! Thanks for sharing
With great respect, I believe your old friend will continue down the mountain to visit you whenever you are starting a new project. True friendships are eternal ....
Great story. I got my start on carving walking sticks from an old navy vet named Jungle. He had a 10 dollar dermal tool he got from harbor freight that he gave me back in 1999. He told me to just have fun and to date I have lost count on all the pieces I have done. I have had many people tell me that I do great work. So I find encouragement from your work and I watch your videos over and over. Your a great crafter. Keep up all the great work.

I have to say the green snakes are my favorite. The color is fantastic. RIP Mountain Man.
Your art is nothing short of spectacular.
Your friend Mountain Man would be proud of the things you have accomplished with your art form. The walking stick you made in his honor is as beautiful as any of the others have made, the carved antlers look so realistic.
You never cease to amaze me my friend. It's a gift to be able to look at a piece of wood and see the finished product before you even start. Very few people can do that. My hat's off to you.

Loving everyday and being thankful for who we are and being blessed for whatever talent we have and living in a wonderful country like we do .
Wow. Incredible story, got the chills listening to it, thank you for sharing.
Mike you have boosted my day, which has been a poor one, as it is 10.40 at night now I found you had posted another great video, and it instantly made my day, and I expect all your fans day a whole lot better. Mountain Man would be proud that you have made so many outstanding artistic sticks, paintings, and carvings as are we all!!! What would we do without you, and your calming voice and encouraging voice overs and encouraging all us would be carvers all over the world. I bet you never thought you would do all that you have done and are still doing and long may you continue to both show and entertain us all. God bless Mike Stinnett and family, Regards from John in England.

Thank you, John! It's always great to hear from you, my friend! I'm sorry you had a rough day, but glad I was able to cheer you up, haha! Mountain man actually was proud of me. He told me so, many times. He bought over a half dozen sticks from me, which further helped to encourage me to make more of them. I hope that I'm able to help others to start doing something that will bring them so much enjoyment. You're right. I never thought I'd be here, doing what I'm doing. I's a lot of fun! Take care, and God bless you too John, from all of us!
