How I got rid of constant overstimulation in my life and stopped being so angry.

Breaking my addiction to the very things that led to an overstimulated, distracted life was a long process. What started as a digital detox turned digital minimalism sparked more catalysts that slowly but surely improved my mental health, decluttered my brain, and helped me feel way less overwhelmed as a mom. I hope my story helps spark changes in your life that leads to less noise, and infinitely more joy.

I quit watching TV in 1995, and just this year bought a TV so I could watch KZread videos to hone my craft and start Pilates workouts more comfortably. I didn't miss it, as I love my peace and quiet. (No, I don't have music or anything playing in the background of my days--silence is truly golden.)

Ive quit all social media minus youtube about 4 years ago and before that on and off id have it. But that helps anxiety levels for me a lot. And more music less tv. I like jazz and spa music when i feel overwhelmed. I have a toddler (a son who’s almost 3) and he looovvveessss outside and constantly wants to be outside and that helps a lot too. Hes a busy body and i am too but learning to slow down and not feel guilty about that is something i hugely need to work on. The hurrying especially for no good reason. He likes to help a lot and letting him do more slowly but surely as he gets older is helpful for the both of us. He actually makes me want to use adaptive coping skills. I seem to only use them or use them the most when it comes to us doing them together like breathing but i need to do them just me more often and model that more

I sense God is asking our generation to let go of materialism, excess, overstimulation, worry, and want. God wants us to quiet our lives and build a life of prayer. You are showing people a fantastic example as a mother of young kids - thank you!

You are saying things that I've never heard anyone say before, and it is truly a revelation. Sometimes I think about when I was little and would fantasize about living in a little cabin near a quiet river with no neighbors nearby, and it scares me as an adult that that fantasy seems impossible because I would be terrified of the boredom. I want to want that fantasy again, and I think what you're talking about here is the path to getting back to that. My biggest problem with eliminating all social media is that there are really great "influencers" out there such as yourself - people who can truly add value to my life by suggesting things I've never considered. Maybe there is room for the few people whose advice I really respect? It's so hard to let a little in and block out the rest.

I totally get that. I think it depends on the person! I subscribe to a few people i really like on youtube because this platform feels a lot easer to balance for me. Maybe only checking social media on your desktop so it's not on your phone as a constant outlet? the. book digitial minimalism addresses this actually, it's a good read!

It’s why I quit my job entirely that had severely burnt me out. I was disgusted by the mom I had become. 1.5yrs later, I’m exclusively a SAHM and it’s significantly better. But still a work in progress, as I slowly but surely learn to enjoy the blessings in each moment and re-train my brain to stop using pathways I learned in my survival mode from the last several years.

I can so relate to this video! However I don’t watch any tv or social media, but I’m constantly consuming long form entertainment via YT or podcasts; mostly sermons or other edifying content - however my mind feels so cluttered! I keep making excuses that this is “helping” me grow in Christ or learning a new skill, but I often forget what I listened to within a few hours. Im also extremely discontent with our living situation as we are a family of 6 living in a townhome with no yard. I’m a mom of four, and we are new Believers, please keep us in prayer.

Same. I don't have Facebook and don't use Instagram that much anymore but YT has/ had me in a place of consuming way too much content. Even when I'm watching good content about faith and homemaking or just current events, I find myself on here way too long. A couple of weeks ago I started deleting KZread on my phone and only putting it back on Saturday and Sunday. So far so good. I really want to get down to once a month. That's my goal. Maybe pray for God to break your desire to use it so often. I wish you the best of luck. Just know your not alone. It's crazy how addictive literally all these platforms are now.

Great video! I became an empty nester a couple years ago, and experienced the same discontentment around my life. There are lots of parenting classes and support groups out there, but no one talks about when your children launch. I had spent years in hockey rinks and baseball fields. Tournaments, games, award parties, etc...then one day it just ended. I had to figure out who I was aside from being a mom. There are so many different seasons in life and parenthood...I love listening to new moms...and I always want to tell them that the time flies...and to enjoy every phase. You are teaching your child something extremely valuable...so many parents are overstimulated, and it transfers onto their kids. It's okay to just be...

We are moving to a ranch w no wifi and have beenstaying there for about 2 months. We came back to do a final pack up and clean out. We both have been watching/listening to utube for 4 days straight and we arein awful moods because of it. I am letting her have excess screen time so i can get work done w no child care so dont beat me up. When we get back to the farm we will detox all over again. I want to be a better mom

Can you make a video about enjoying the season of life that you are currently in especially after becoming a mom? It will help a lot of moms who are in a similar situation especially the ones that had a career and find it hard or that they have to keep that career even after becoming a mom.

"It is of the highest value to me that I reflect God's heart in the way that I parent her. The same way I can run to the Lord and He is always receptive to me, I never want her to feel like she's a burden or an interruption to me." I started crying. I don't even have kids. But I have friends and neighbors and colleagues and cats, and I feel EXACTLY THE SAME WAY--I spend so much time in a world of fantasy and screens that I'm not even present to my own life. This is such a powerful video--thank you for making it.

I appreciate this video. I wonder what this looks like as a single person because I think about using my phone less or not being on computer as much but then it's my connection to people in a sense otherwise I am just hanging by myself (in a season of isolation too - desiring friends/connections but it just has not really happened yet.... not for a lack of trying too, so clearly the Lord is doing something), but yeah I do ponder this. Thanks for the inspo and God Bless you.

As with you, I am a believer and love the Lord and my church family - but often feel like weekly small group meetings, men’s/womens events, helping a brother/sister out and living far from them (we drive a distance for a great gospel centered church) actually add to this chaos. I have a problem reconciling slow living (which I desire for me and my kids sake) to living on mission. How to you reconcile the two?
