Had my hair locked since I was 15 and I cut em for my 24th birthday, one thing I learned with having dreads with mixed hair is to CROCHET new growth, it will keep your roots tight for longer, retwists would only stay in my hair for a week at max
@iwasjustchillin

I started to lock my hair when I was around 14/15, and started maintaining with a crochet hook. I ended up cutting them off after 3 years because my locs looked and felt really stiff and unnatural. I think that in the long run, letting the locking process do it's think naturally, is far more worth it than getting them to loc up faster.

@@iwasjustchillin if I didn’t crochet my roots then my dreads would just tangle together at the roots real bad, retwists wouldn’t stay long enough for the new growth to lock in with the dreads, that’s the only method that worked the best for me

Yeah that makes sense, and I definitely have moments where the ends get very loose but that’s all about the process of the locs it was the breathing state I called it and I needed them to stretch out natural so then I could twist them again down the road.

Thanks for sharing your journey. My baby is Black, Panamanian, and Puerto Rican. I starter his braidlocs in January 2024. I unravelled his cornrows, but keep the grid. I also used a lego for even parting. Since his hair is curly I will maintain his locs with an interlocking tool. I have 2 year braidlocs as well. So I am excited about our loc journies 🥰! P.S. with interlocking we can wash our hair as often as we desire, and it will stay uniformed. We only use translucent shampoo, translucent conditioner, oil, and water in a spray bottle...to prevent build up in our locs.

1:31 when you say parting do you mean sectioning the roots off the a rat tail comb or do you mean separating with your fingers to prevent congos?

Separating with my fingers to prevent congos, splitting/ separating them help keep there individualism as well when they start to grow.
Wb if I’m starting long. Would the process be different on how to achieve this look. I feel my hair being long will clump together so easily and fast where the fro gets bigger.
