HOW I GOT INTO CSULB (honors)

*PLEASE NOTE: I'm sorry if I made it seem like extracurriculars factor into what CSUs look at for admission. It's just your grades and scores. The other things I talked about were taken into consideration for the honors program/president's scholarship. I probably should have made that more clear.

    This video was very informative! I recently heard back from CSULB and I got in. I’m so happy but I still have to wait for 7 more colleges to choose what college I want to go to. But this made me consider CSULB a lot more

    Can you only apply to the honors program before freshman year?

  • @thedhive6512

    I currently go here. I TA'd some undergrad classes and compared to the UC (did my undergrad there) it is significantly easier to do well in classes. The quality of work product is a major drop off from the UC alone (maybe not Merced) I couldn't imagine other schools. CSU admission is all but guaranteed for the most part.

    CSULB's admission rate is actually 31.9% :) I'm sure the classes are different than at UCs, but it also depends a lot on the subject and the professor!

    What were your individual scores on the SAT Reading, Writing, and Math? How did you prepare for the SAT? Did you think your teachers did a good job of preparing you in high school for the SAT or ACT? Which was easier for you: SAT or ACT?

  • @_heyitsmay

    @_heyitsmay

    3 жыл бұрын

    This is seriously straining my memory to try and remember this haha but I think I got a 740 on Writing, a 660 on Reading, and a 560 on Math. I'm pretty sure about the 740, but the other two are just estimates, I'm not sure. The SAT has changed since the time I took it--it was out of 2400 at the time, and I got 1960 total both times I took it. I had a tutor for the SAT before the second time I took it but tbh I didn't really like how he tried to teach me the math portion and it didn't stick with me, hence why my score didn't improve lol. I mostly just did practice problems online from the SAT website. I wouldn't say my teachers prepared me at all--what I learned in my classes wasn't related to the test content. The math is algebra and geometry stuff, and at the time I took the SAT I was in AP Calc so I had to kind of go back and relearn that, but the questions are just kind of different from what you'd be learning in your classes. And for the reading, there are a lot of vocabulary words and stuff that you wouldn't necessarily learn in your classes either. I basically had to do all of the prep on my own. My school did have a PSAT that you could take sophomore year so you could see where you were at, so I would recommend doing that if you have the opportunity! The SAT was definitely easier for me. The ACT science section kind of kicked my butt. I was definitely stronger on the reading and writing, so having both math and science on the ACT made it harder for me. That's just me personally though, I think it really depends on what subjects you're strongest in!

    I currently have a 4.0 unweighted and a 4.4 weighted. Do you have any tips to higher my chances up getting the presidential scholarship award? I am currently in a program in which by the time I am a senior I would be doing ride alongs with EMTs and it gives me the chance of taking the licensed exam my senior year. I plan on joining clubs and did volleyball my freshmen year as well as swim sophomore year.

    That all sounds really good! Like I said, I had a 4.0/4.45 and was a valedictorian and still didn't get it, so I'm not sure that I'm the best person to be asking for advice 😅 but I know extracurriculars and leadership experience definitely looks good, and make sure you put a lot of time and thought into your essay that goes with the application because that plays a big role too. Maybe have a college counselor at your school help you look over it if possible. I wish you the best of luck! :)

    So the supplemental application would only be if you were interested in the honors program or the president's scholarship. If you just wanted to apply to CSULB, the regular one would be all you needed to do.
