What schools do you recommend?

I work as a DoD contractor (Navy) as a cyber security analyst (non-technical) with a Sec+ and TS clearance earning $120k. I'll be on my 5th year working remotely 80-90% of the time depending on the workload and scheduled meetings I have with clients and other stakeholders. What helps is that I set my own schedule along with having reliable team members and leadership on both the client and contractor side of things along with a pretty good work/life balance. It helps that the work that I do is a rewarding and learning experience which I'm passionate about and end up not using PTO and in turn maxing out my cap which is 5 weeks so I have to take time off every pay period in order for me to keep accruing. All in all, I'm very lucky to end up with this job and although I would like to earn more, I really value work/life balance as I do have a family of my own to take care of. Hoping that everyone looking into this field will find their happy place.

Where are you at?

I found job hopping worked for me. I have less than 5 years experience and went from being a specialist then analyst then engineer and now on the verge of moving into management and hiring an analyst that will eventually report to me. Work remotely making 130k now as an engineer. Everyone’s path is different but that’s what’s worked for me. Don’t have a certification beyond security + aside from some vendor specific certs like PCNA.

I'm a stay at home mom and wife, with a goal of having a remote job in cybersecurity, so I can still be home with my kids. I'm currently on my last module for the Google IT Proffesional Certificate, while also on the 6/8 module for Google Cybersecurty Proggessional Certificate. Then I'll get my security plus certificate. I have no college degree, just some customer service based job experience. Videos like these are helpful and give me hope when life is challenging.

Interesting facts

This is refreshing to hear. I have a BS in Information Systems. Took networking classes in college. However, fast forward I should of got the network+ cert 10 yrs ago. Currently going thru Network+ course material. Im pushing up in age and am trying to go thru a career change. Remote work is the goal, however, how difficult is it to get a first job remote from anywhere? Most remote jobs require stateside residence and I reside abroad.

Learning IT fundamentals & networking is essential before learning cybersecurity. In-dept understanding of networking protocol like 3-way handshake, the OSI model, how data transited and protected is a MUST.

Hey Sandra, Love your content. Quick Question. Do you ever do any Q&A Opportunities for the general public? (paid or unpaid). Maybe review college program descriptions (ie, Reviewing the courses that are offered at certain colleges) i feel like many people (even myself) are kind of confused as there are so many different offerings for Cybersecurity/Tech in general.

I have a CySA+ which is the next level up from a Sec+ and it has been 9 months since I passed. And still cannot land a job. The DoD considers the cert an IAT II level. Thank you for this information and video!

I'd say that applies to every industry nowadays. I've worked in numerous fields and even being self employed right now, I even see favoritism and whatnot within an industry full of self employed people. Knowing what to do helps, but mainly it's WHO you know for sure. It's sad, and I am done playing nice guy, which is why I'm gonna play dirty too and get help from an in law who's been in Cybersecurity in order to get my foot in the door once I learn enough and get my Certs.

I love your videos on the content and the role of what you do. Security + isnt enough. Even the entry jobs dont have it listed. Entry level jobs right now are asking for minum bachelors degree 2 years exp as well as other certifications like cissp. Just type in "security analyst" in any job search security + is not listed. Just being honest to people security + isnt enough to get you entry level right now

Overall true. There are some exceptions. If you live near certain military bases, try the contractors... That's how I got in. I do also have my Pentest+, and now CASP+, but I didn't when I got started

I would start with learning networking plus. Having a strong foundation in Networking is a must. Powercert is a good channel to learn, it is animated.

My CompTIA certs expired in 2018. I need to renew them but this will cost a few hundred dollars apiece, to retake! The training I can get cheap or almost free but the exams, are expensive.

Just obtained my A+ and my Net+. I'm currently an IT technician and already have a year of experience. I'm starting to study for my Sec+. I don't have a degree in computer science or anything IT related, just a bachelors in multidisciplinary studies. I'm sure there's plenty I need to learn in terms of cybersecurity, but will my experience as an IT technician give me a leg up when applying to cybersecurity? I rarely dabble in cybersecurity at work.

If you have network experience, that’s already a huge leg up if you pivot by going into a network security role, even cloud security if you get a few beginner azure or aws certs, there’re lots of ways you can go from here. They are wrong/have no idea what they are talking about. A knowledge of how data is transferred over a network, and how and where the data is encapsulated/unencapsulated as it travels up/down the OSI protocol stack is a fundamental concept that you must comprehend for you to you understand how data is used and designated for specific purposes, for application use, and its delivery methods and recovery protocols. Without an understanding of the TCP/IP protocols you will fail. Without knowing the difference between UDP and TCP you will fail. Plainly, if you don't know what an ICMP echo message is, then you need to either take your CCNA or your Network+. Then all the rest of what you are trying to learn will mean so much more to you. The context will make your knowledge fit into the important concepts that you are trying to comprehend, and thus apply to your work environment.

I've been a Network Engineer for 5 years now and starting the Cybersecurity/Engineering BS program. Firstly, they won't enroll you unless you have some experience or a certificate or two, look through the certificates they recommend and look for an "easier" one to get. Now, you should consider how easy or hard it is for you to focus and learn before enrolling. I have ADHD and when I hit a wall my brain turns off, it is really hard for me to focus on learning from a book, or memorizing terms, it's easier for me with hands-on experience. I am taking the Comptia route, compared to the Cisco route, I find the Comptia courses have a lot of interactive practice based questions, along with knowledge sources my Instructor will gives me. But, you have to keep in mind, for most people, taking these certification exams usually take months of prep. At WGU, each certification course is 4 units, and you have to complete 12 units each semester (6 months). So, if you think you can prepare for and pass highly technical exams every two months, I'd say go for it! But, if you think it would be too much, the courses for these exams aren't cheap, but not as expensive, and stressful, as a semester at WGU. Start with Comptia A+ Core 1, see how well you can do within a certain amount of time and go from there!

None. Ultimately, it will tie down to HR deciding whether having a certification is important or not. Some companies hire or do not hire and it is based on a whims of a person making the decision to hire.

Question. Did you have a degree of any kind ? I’ve been in IT for 20 years & my income is terrible. It’s the side of the industry. Tier 1/ 2 technician. No degree but that’s not why. Other employees w degrees make around the same. So my curiosity is I have the experience for sure & willing to take a legit course to change the IT section of the industry to make an income worth talking about. All this knowledge & work & low pay in this part of the industry.

I don’t recommend Cybersecurity if you get bored easily lol 😂 I first recommend looking into those SOC Analysts roles and see if you are ok starting out there! Otherwise you will hate yourself 😅 Good luck !

I’d start with the Google Cybersecurity or IT Certs on Coursera! They have a 7-day free trial so if you try it for a week and don’t like it, you don’t have to drop $$ on it. They’re both great intro level certs for IT or cybersecurity depending on which one you prefer. imp.i384100.net/k0R0rz If you decide to do it, it’s paid by monthly subscription so the schedule is pretty flexible. I would recommend to download the exam objectives first and go over that. Professor Messor has study notes covering this. The exam primarily uses acronyms in the questions so it's better to know the definitions. The pbq's I've experienced mostly focus on firewall configuration ports and ACL's.

No. At the moment, US is not outsourcing and prefers to hire people from US, not Indians as Indians proved to be scammers and people who were abusing their privileges to scam people on the side.

2:46. You have a degree in IT plus you have Sec+ cert. I hardly call that No Experience.

I got Net+ and Sec+ 1 experience in IT Support. Currently working as Information Security Analyst, I’ve been here for 4 months. I make around 54K/yr. I plan on taking CySA+ and move to another company that will pay me at least 80-85K when I hit 1 year mark here. Am I being realistic? Then I will wait one more year and I’ll want to take the BTL1 and move to another company that will pay me at least 100-110K.

That’s a little ambitious, personally I’d stay 2-3 years just because of how hard the job market is right now. Jobs usually want more than a year of experience. It will also depend on how competent you are as well because you’ll have to be able to beat out other candidates with similar resumes. It’s not impossible but with only one year of experience it’ll be challenging. You’ll need to beef of ur resume outside of ur work experience. Best of luck, wishing you all the best!

Salary is only relevant to where you live. Saying you make 6 figures means nothing to me if the cost of living is equivalently higher. Refer to positions based on benefits and future prospects more. I say this because making 6 figures and living in like NY or CA, is not a lot considered if you made the same living in LA or AZ. Or even TX. Just saying.

Prior IT experience or prior job experience? If it's the former, sit down with your resume and a few job listings, then work out terms and descriptions that match. For instance, if your most recent job was at McDonald's prepping food and the new job description says, "Candidate will need to resolve tickets in a high paced environment with accuracy and efficiency," well, there you go, you can do that! Instead of putting down "Food Prepper" as your title, go with something like, "Part-time/Day/Night Support." And last, but very not least, have a non-specific answer when they question your time at McDonald's, then follow up your answer with a question pertaining to the job you are interviewing for. Ex. Interviewer: "Tell me about your time at McDonald's." You: "For 18 months I was part of a team of a tight group of individuals as Day Support which handled daily ticketing and escalation. I read on the job description that your team uses [Insert ticketing software tool], does the team use that strictly for ticket management?" Asking them questions throughout the interview gets them talking more about them than focusing on you. They'll get an idea about you that you can ask the right questions and might be a good fit for the company, even if you don't have very much experience. Even if you don't get a job offer, you can carry that information onto the next and work on what you want to say and ask the next interviewer. You'll be learning new terms and new tools each company uses, do your research on those terms and tools, get comfortable talking about them even if you haven't used them before. Ask about their onboarding and documentation process, what will be expected of you in the first month - first three months - first year, find out if you will have all the support and reference documentation to be able to learn about the environment you'll be working in. Every team has a process and won't expect you to know everything about everything your first day or few months into the position.

My degree is a Bachelors in Information Science and Technology (IST)!

Security+ certified 2015 and still no IT job.

I'm still in kindergarten when it comes to computers, To be honest, I don't know what the initials IT mean yet. Where do I start if you were me? I'm retired and would love to work in Cybersecurity But not sure where to start...thanks

I would recommend starting with the CompTIA A+ certification. This will give you a basic understanding of computers. Then, Network+, which furthers your knowledge into networking, which is basically what the Internet works off of. Finally, Security+, which Sandra mentions here, to learn a bit of the security aspect of networks, computers, and all around safety.

Ah ha...so you had 2 yrs of experience before getting your certification. two years of experience regardless was likely a huge reason why you were hired.

And a degree... this video peeves me, I have 6 years in I.T, 3 GIAC certs, OSCP and I cant even get an L1 SOC job at 65k a year lol

Usually people tell me to talk slower 😆 but you can try 1.25x speed, that should help!

I typically recommend setting a slower (.75x speed) or custom speed setting if it's still too fast, I already set it to .85x speed when I edit but it's probably because I usually watch videos in 2x
