I’ve gotten my Google Cybersecurity Professional Cert, ISC2 CC & I take my Security + at the end of this month. I’m really leaning towards GRC since I also have a Criminal Justice Bachelors Degree & can simply get a masters at WGU. Technical Skills have definitely been put on the back burner for me 😭😭 great video & recommendations btw 🙌🏽

@@str8jenn.nochaseryess. The Google cert helped me pass my ISC2 about 2 weeks after finishing it. & I also am using that knowlege, the Professor Messor Sec+ course on youtube & practice exams on Wiley & Linked In to study for my Security+. I take it the 24th.

I recently became a cybersecurity analyst (Identity & Access Management) at my company after 4 years of help desk and desktop support and what really helped me was shadowing the IT Security and putting myself out there so my current boss gave me an opportunity as a position for security analyst opened on her team.

A real question: how would I make the transition from trucking into Tech or cyber? Went to school for IT for almost 10 years. Six months in the school closed, vanished. So I went to work, long story short got all my endorsement now I make 110k a year. So now I have a lot down time and I'm back figuring out should I jump back and if I do , How? And how do I make the equivalent if possible? Through all these videos, I'm starting to see a different reality of along path where I have to fight for a job, where as a driver I'm in demand every where I go. Should I take a boot camp at Thrive or 4 year degree while I work?

I am a rising junior student, and I wanted to get into security architecture/ threat intelligence, but the market's been tough for internships. Don't even matter which internship I do cause once u get your foot in the door, u can hop from one place to another smoothly.

Thanks! Nice video, but with 0 experience why do Nuff people say I should start with ComptiA+, Security +, and then Network? That creates a lot of confusion sometimes. And some say if you start with Google cert you still have to take A+. Anyway am looking to start from scratch so I can get a help desk job then I'll work my way up there.

No one path fits all, just look at the job descriptions for the jobs you want to apply to and reverse engineer your way into it with complete body of work!

Nice info, I want to get into cyber work for a US company but I want to live in another country. I've read it's not easy with cyber because companies are uncomfortable with the security risks of employees travelling to other countries. Which roles do you think best suit a frequent traveller who wants to work abroad?

@@markelsamuel1618 My bad if I wasnt clear. I meant for any1 who wants to work abroad. For example, if you work remotely for a US company now but wanted to take that same role to another country. The US company you work for may not allow you to work abroad because of potential security risks. I just thought maybe some roles in tech are less strict because not dealing with sensitive data. Do you know of any roles in cyber where its fairly easy for companies to grant permission to work abroad or is it unheard of?

Great video. Question.. I hear people talk about knowing your frameworks for GRC. How do we go about learning them? Is there a certification, I can get for NIST OR HIPPA for example?

Certifications for specific frameworks do exist, for example PCI-DSS has either an Internal Assessor Certification the ISA, or an external Security Assessor or QSA (Qualified Security Assessor). However, these certifications are incredibly expensive and can only be paid for by your employer (unless you're a self-employed individual). The best way to go about learning these frameworks is utilize the free resources out there such as www.nist.gov/cyberframework (NIST CSF) www.hhs.gov/hipaa/for-professionals/privacy/laws-regulations/index.html (HIPAA) www.pcisecuritystandards.org/ (PCI DSS). This is strictly for knowledge, if you want to validate that you know these there are several courses and I also recommend making LinkedIn post talking about these frameworks to have a track record you can show to a future employer.

Also VOLUNTEER, VOLUNTEER, VOLUNTEER at whatever organization you Intern for or are working on Help Desk. Also, don't be afraid to write a sample of policies to share in interviews are on applications for GRC positions.

I'm a SysAdmin and left my job to study more on my certifications. I am doing my Network+ and brushing up my Cisco as well. The thing is should I still do Network+ or just go to Security+?

Network+ for knowledge of ports and protocols at a fundamental level vs. Security+ for better marketability and CIA Triad and basic Security Knowledge. Your choice bro, but if you want to go the Security route, I would recommend Sec+.

Honestly, you might be fine applying now with a bachelors, I would try a test run of applications after you get your certifications, set a date to start your masters and if you can get a jobs before you start the masters program than you’re all set. Once you get the certs try for some paid internship opportunities as well. For the certs you’re looking at about a $300 investment but you’ll need them regardless.

I’m doing the WGU Masters they give you 5 certificates I plan on getting a few on my own as well. Love the classes the professors and mentors. I’m about to start my third class I started in May I’m doing about a class per month! You can technically do the whole program in one semester. I’m going a bit slower as I work full time and this a shift from my current IT role as systems analyst for my home state. The average completion is a year or you can drag it out up to 2 years I’m shooting for a year to year and a half.

University Of Central Florida is offering a cybersecurity boot camp with a voucher for comp Tia security + for $18k a 9 month program that will help you with experience, resume, advisors. Do you think this is too much to spend?

Welp if security + is the easier, then I am doomed. I failed it twice and yes I have a bachelors. I tried messer videos and Darrel’s book. I still just can’t pass it. Any advice?

Bruh, I will never have a bachelor's. Practical experience is something I can get. But the school/college bachelor stuff is a hard pass. I'm too old with too little time and money for school. Can't I just get certifications while doing entry level help desk? Also the National director of cybersecurity is pushing companies to look for skill based hiring rather than people who've gone to school. So what do you think about all this if one has and can gain practical experience vs school?

@vince_86 Bro you can go the certifications route but getting certifications also don’t ensure you have the “practical” skills needed. I have worked for 7 companies, I have yet to meet someone who got the job with a boot camp and some certs. However those that do have jobs without degrees have some sort of practical experience that separated them so I agree Vince skills and experience will win in the end, getting a bachelors tho is proven to make it easier for you to initially get past HR.

@@Vince_86I was just making a little joke because you said you have no money but don’t want to go to school but since you want to make cute little excuses, the difference between the person you are and the person you want to be is: the person you want to be makes their own circumstances and joins the military (like me) or something equivalent, and the person you are blames their circumstances for their present situation and assumes others must be the beneficiaries of a “silver platter”. Moral of the story, figure it tf out. It’s called sacrifice. Part time night class at a community college is a great start.

Hey, experience is key, look for some sort of internship or help desk role, take some time to study and pass foundational certifications, and begin a self-paced bachelors degree. WGU has a program you can complete in a 1 year.

I wouldn't recommend this, but I went to a traditional 4-year school and finished in 3 years. Expensive and time consuming! I would recommend a self-paced good bachelors degree that you can do as quickly as possible. WGU is a great program, currently taking my masters there.

I feel like this is cap lol i have my BS in Cybersecurity, a+ Net+ sec+ CC and CySA+. Been applying for months on end. I already work in a base IT level job and i cant even get a call back. No calls. No interviews. Nothing. Just rejection emails everytime. Im giving upn it before i ever touch it. Im fed up and discouraged. Im getting a secind bachelor's degree in something else and saying screw it. I stuffed all my certs and degrees in my closet lol i cant stanf looking at it anymore without getting angry.

There’s more steps than just certs and degree. If you’ve been applying for months with no response then it’s probably your resume. Don’t get discouraged, feel free to send me your resume to my email for feedback.

It's most likely your resume and/or cover letter. hR uses cover letters to weed ppl out. If you submit a job application that has an option to attach 'supported docs'/cover letter and you do not attach one, your application goes to the trash

Hi, I’m a Network Systems Security Specialist. I would advise to revise your resume and highlight any projects you’ve done on the side during your undergrad as-well as your IT professional career. Use keywords from the job description and try to cater it to your resume and showcase your experience. Don’t feel discouraged, and keep on applying regardless if you get a rejection. When I look at potential candidates resumes, I highlight their accomplishments and what they’ve done project wise so I can ask about it during our engagement . If you need help revising your resume, please advise and I can assist you.
