I have 8 months old Aussie ; she’s very smart and easy to teach: but those god given dogs will try to overwhelm you with their brain , it’s just in their dna 🧬;

ecause of YOU and Frankie I NOW have a border collie that runs off leash at waterfalls in Tennessee!!! Thank you so much!!! I am older too..70!!And perfected this with her just last month. I have never been so proud. I watched your videos when she was a puppy and she is so well trained now. Have never ever raised my voice at my baby.

One of the things I did with my pup was, when we were in the woods and she ran off, instead of calling her, I’d take the opportunity to hide behind a tree. It became a game for us. She started expecting me to hide and she wasn’t going to let me get away with it! Great fun. For both of us!

You are literally my life goals. An Aussie and a Jeep? 😭

good points on getting him out of the car…i work on a trauma team, many people do not plan for their response to a trauma…don’t sit with your back to the front on a restaurant..when possible, scope out an escape route, carry a window breaking tool in case your car ends up in water, i use a soft crate that could be cut open,the frame keeps the shape…otherwise it’s tent fabric. i’m usually carrying grandkids, or other things…i clipped my golden retriever like you’re doing, but i don’t know if they had soft crates back then.

I work for one of those members only dog parks and it beats our public DOG parks hands down! Now granted, if we had off leash places as nice as Bruce Pit it might be a different story. Most of our local parks are on leash, and while they are very nice parks, I find walking with my Aussies off leash so much more enjoyable for all of us. Our local DOG parks are just open fenced areas with no walking trails or trees even. My dog park is 15 acres of fenced wooded and open land with a shallow doggy pond, a mile of walking trails and areas for training with agility equipment. We also have a clubhouse with bathing areas and offer full bath services. The behavioral assessment when you join is very informal, we don’t want to exclude any dogs, but we do want owners that are going to be responsible. I was a member for five years before I started working here and I don’t regret one single dollar spent. Worth every penny for two active Minis who need to get their zoomies out and keep their crazy smart brains engaged.

Good tips. The thing I've noticed about Aussies is how relational they are. My next dog will be a miniature Australian Shepherd. One of my vets really put me off of dog parks when I asked her about them. Disease problems were her concern and she cited many recent dogs who had been in for catching said diseases (I forgot what they were.)

Yeah I totally understand that but some people only live near dog parks and not the woods so they need to go to get their dog the exercise that they need. Bringing your dog for check ups is important

2:47 this is so spot on! I have 20 years experience and you are so far ahead for a young dog owner. You're on your way to being a professional dog trainer I have a feeling.

I’ve already noticed the “check in” outside our home. Just in the yard but our yard is several acres and lots of trees. Eye contact I’ve just learned is super super important with dogs. I’ve always been under this obviously wrong impression that eye contact makes a fearful or aggressive dog when that is obviously very much not the case. Don’t shy away from eye contact! Praise and treat that great thing! I have a 6 month pit bull we are training for medical alert but just as an all around well behaved member of society. Thank you so much for your videos!

We have two Aussies and one of them used to vomit every so often. This has gone on for years and we’ve tried a lot of things that seemed to help but not stop it completely, until we put them both on grain free food. Made a world of difference! One of our Aussies was sensitive to it and he hasn’t been sick since the changeover. Could help Frankie!

I have to mini aussies, this is what I did too. Their super loyal and attentive! Great video

After having my aussie heeler for 7 months and still not able to master recall and eye contact, I am gonna start from ground zero again. Start from home and hopefully eventually I can give my pup the freedom she deserves! It's literally so frustrating and embarrassing when I have to ask other dog owners to grab my pup when it's time to go.

Maddie also does the look and see alll the time. And if I whistle she comes flying. All of this was just due to constantly talkong to her ans starting with short distances of "come". We both love her freedom yet connection the whole time.I was determined to do like you and it just shows ANYONE any age can have this relationship with their dog. THANK YOU

Very fair to note that aussies are bred to be handler focused! Might be harder with a Great Pyrenees or American Bully.

you first train they can’t, then you make them sit for the greet, never let them go visit some random person…your dog is deciding what to do without your permission…it leads to more self direction. i had to build an inside the yard corral because they neighbors wouldn’t listen, they’d come up to the wrought iron fence like my yard is the petting zoo…she was destroying plants with her excitement, and self rewarding, practicing bad behavior over and over again, some people are so annoying

hey joey!! so i was wondering if you could do a KZread video on how you introduced Frankie to going on hikes and how you build up the trust of letting him off leash??

Idk if your still considering a Frankie indie olympics but I came up with some ideas for it. A treat puzzle one seeing who can do it faster, Maybe you hide in a park and see who finds you faster, maybe a normal running race, and a line of treats for both of them and then see who finishes it faster. Sorry if I’m bothering you about this.

I've got a 41/2 month old American shepherd and he does that check in when I let him outside to potty he always looks at where I am or comes to the door and when I walk up to let him in he dips back off the porch lol...he can be very tricky sometimes but I love him to death!...he is the smartest dog we have had so far....aussies have such great personality I can't see myself getting a different kind of pup other than Aussie!...there so loyal and they love there family!...we got him at 8 weeks old and he has been with us every since!...we are his only mom and dad and he knows that!...its so sad tho that they only live up to 12 years!....i wish they lived as long as we do...they have such short lives but I hope to make blues the best he could ever have!...i love all Aussies!!!!

One of your best videos for Aussie owners- As far as paid parks. By me in Wisconsin, it is relatively cheap around $35 a year. Gets you in every state park in the state whenever, as much as you want. Im not a huge fan for paying-but some of these parks are huge, and beautiful. I find that going to these national parks are better suited for my dog-there are no restrictions for dogs however, I have not have had a bad experience. Check out Kohler-Andrae State park, I live close by, its gorgeous.

Love your videos! I've been nervous about taking my boy Samson to Bruce Pitt but have also been wanting to give him the opportunity to explore a bigger off-leash park. Really appreciate your videos! Hoping I can take him sometime in the next couple of weeks now getting all your great advice! :)

Just stick to the trails and go on a weekday! Do NOT go prime time on the weekend ahah or visit Conroy Pit because it is even bigger with more trails

I’m getting a 10 week old Aussie mini this week and I was wanting to get recommendations on harness and seat belt combo and more info on crate training and just what all I. Reed and what should I start working with him on “commands” when I first get him and how to do it. ? What treats to buy

I'm so jealous of that dog park. All the dog parks in my area are some fenced in grass with a yearly fee.

Another great video! I guess there are a few things to consider with a free vs paid dog park. Maybe if you were running into issues with aggressive untrained dogs in the free parks it might be a good idea to go to a paid park where they screen dogs. Or maybe if someone’s dog doesn’t like being around a lot of other dogs then a paid dog park might be the answer. I imagine there would be a lot less dogs in a paid park. Over all I wouldn’t want to pay to take my dog to the park. As long as they are out running around and having fun with you, I really don’t think the dog would notice a difference or care.

New subscriber with an Aussie mix puppy. Love your videos and insight. It's fun to see many of your dog's characteristics in my mix breed. Late response to your poll, but I would be willing to pay a usage fee for a dog park as nice as yours IF that money went to the park's upkeep and not in the local government's coffers for some other program. $30 a weekend would be awfully steep though. I'm thinking a buck or two per visit (pay at the gate) or some sort of pass (monthly, annually, seasonal, etc.). Due to limited space and the HIGH cost of real estate, dog parks here in Hawaii are nothing more than a large fenced-in yard.

It took me and my golden doodle about 3 months and it is decent sometimes he doesn’t listen😂 but most of the time he does.

I have a mini aussie that is 5 months old, will you make a video on what to do when they are being defiant.

Great video ! No dog parks near here and thats just fine with me. Jake, my red Merle Aussie will not start a fight, but will not take sh*t from other dogs and won't "suffer a fool" He's trained off leash and we have a little ised frisbee park that he can run and then we do obedience drills. Is your's a mini Aussie ? I've been in three different situations where having a fifty pound Aussie "pulled my fat out of the fire" A smaller dog couldn't have. Brilliant wee dogs though !

My Aussie wouldn't let me out of her sight. She would go perhaps 100 to 200 yards away, but she had to know where I was at all times. You can't make an Aussie run away from my experience.

At what age did you start this and how long did it take. Been trying this with a 3 month old Aussie and have only acheived the eye contract while holding treats at home part. Currently still struggling with walking on a leash never mind a dog park.

Anyone know what kind of harness that is? My Aussie is freakishly sensitive to his leash and harness and I’ve tried six different kinds…counterconditioning and desensitization haven’t worked and it’s been almost a year of trying.

with respect to going to for-fee controlled dog parks, I probably wouldn't have gone with Panna, my Vizsla - we really never felt the need for it, although I might pay one time to go to some 'special' dog park, if I was in an area where there were no off-leash parks or trails like we have here - I guess if some people feel more secure at such places, that's fine, but we never needed it... I'm just enjoying seeing Bruce & Conroy again...

Do you have any leash training tips especially to get the dog to walk next to you and not ahead or behind?

Reward them during walks for walking the way you want, and try to have their attention while walking. Use the leash as a tool

I get you my dog was bit by two dogs that were off their leash and their owners claimed to have them on voice control and my Aussie is very non confrontational so he just stood there.

At what age did Frankie get really good at this? My pup is about 5 months now and he does it but not when there are other dogs or people present. He has to go say hi to everyone.

A tip you can do is just have some one over do not let them pay attention to the dog or even look at her let the dog come to them and have YOU reward him until he is used to him then he can start giving treats then do more people as a group and more people he/she has never met😁 hope this helps

How do you learn Frankie to walk next to you?

I like some dog parks, but I agree it's not for everyone or every situation. There can be 9 well behaved friendly dogs in the park, with one untrained asshole messing everything up. It helps when you live in a small place and know most of the dogs and owners there. Then it can be a great socializing experience.

Yeah we actually go to Indie's dog park which is a small local own and Frankie is the outsider there hah

I avoid dog parks......live just west of you in a small town. people don't train their dogs and we've had a few scary interactions.

We pay a one time fee of $60 for our local dog park. There isn’t a test or anything but it’s the closest dog park to me (less than a mile). Compared to the free ones that you’ve shown in your videos....it’s definitely not as nice. More so a few acres that are fenced in with a few agility obstacles. I was gonna try out a free dog park a few weeks ago for something more woodsy like this on in the video, however the one somewhat near my house seemed so chaotic and nobody was watching their dogs so we decided not to go in. Maybe I’ll have to try a day that’s not as busy.

At what age did you start letting Frankie off leash? We were considering it with our aussie (7 months old) during a hike in the woods last weekend but on the same day we were going to we encountered another owner who had lost her dog in the woods and it scared us away from trying.

Frankie is over a year and a half. My best tip for you is to go outside with your dog and show them that they aren’t in trouble when you call them

Aussies do that look back naturally. I’ve had 4 of them and they all do it without us saying anything. They also stop and wait until they get the OK.

is it weird that my 4 month puppy naturally does this without me training her ?

My 7 month old Aussie does this and I didn’t even train her. I take her to the park and let her off the leash and she’ll do her but then look to see where I am. If I’m even 4ft away, she runs to me
