How I Fit Concealed Drawer Slides [video 524]

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Back at the workshop drawer cabinet and in this one I make the final pair of inset drawer boxes from Birch-faced Poplar plywood with Maple faced globulus plywood fronts using loose tenons and Peanut 2 connectors, and I fit them with full extension soft-close undermount or concealed drawer slides. Enjoy!

    Great video Peter . Thank you for talking about price. 17 pounds is a great deal for the undermount slides. Around here all I can get is Blume and they are $65 (CSN) and up per drawer. They do work flawlessly though.

    One detail that would save a bit of time, would be to cut the height of the back panel to the internal height of the drawer, and then run the drawer base to the outside face of the back panel, and then screw fix the base to the drawer box back. this would then remove the need to run a groove for the base as well as removing the need to make cutouts for the runners.

  • @10MinuteWorkshop

    @10MinuteWorkshop

    That's how I used to make them, but if you're running a grove anyway, then it doesn't make much difference to the time element, and having the base fully contained within the drawer box is just a nicer, more 'finished' look. 👍

    Great series Peter. Interestingly Blum hinges used to come with a lifetime guarantee which if you are using for a kitchen bin say, makes them great value as they will wear out and you get free replacements. The Festool of the hinge world, expensive for a reason😊

    Another good video Peter, I always found the hole in the back of Blum runners a bit crude, so always used Grass ones as they had a nice little bracket which you screwed to the back for location and adjustment. drawer boxes were always solid timber such as Idigbo or if where clothes were stored Cedar of Lebanon and dovetailed by hand front and back. Generally the back did not have a groove just made shallower and this allowed the bottom to be screwed to the back to allow for removing if required. I much prefer the concealed runners as you do not see the metal grant style one screwed to the side.

  • @10MinuteWorkshop

    @10MinuteWorkshop

    Always used Grass early on for that reason, and because they were good for 60Kg vs 40Kg for Blum. But they had a massive price hike and my local yard switched to stocking Blum, so it was just easier to make the switch. 🤷‍♂️👍

    @@10MinuteWorkshop once you've got the router bits, collar and jig, I'm sure this kind of thing becomes a no brainer. I'm just struggling to get past the startup cost of it all. I've got the kit in my Axminster basket, but for the number of drawers I need to build, I just can't justify the price over using a false front to each drawer.

    Hi Peter, I really enjoyed your video. I couldn't quite catch what thickness of the ply you've used for the bottom of the draw. Also, what size of the router bit to go with it, to make the appropriate groove? I really appreciate your help. Thanks in advance.

    It’s 6mm Birch ply for the drawer base - the Birch ply alternatives don’t go that thin - and I used a 1/4”’ grooving bit as it give a little more wiggle room, and “6mm” birch ply is often a little thicker. 👍

    I suppose the big difference between the Rejs runners and Blum for example is the warranty? Blum is guaranteed for life whilst I assume the Rejs only has standard 1 year? I suppose that's up to the builder and the client if that's worth the premium or not. I have used "cheap" undermounts before and they were a nightmare but it was a few years ago now so perhaps things have changed, you seem to rate the Rejs runners however so I think I might pick a set up to try.

  • @10MinuteWorkshop

    @10MinuteWorkshop

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, though I don’t know anyone who’s attempted to claim on the Blum warranty. These runners were recommended to me by Derek Barrett, who has used them extensively in his ‘contract’ grade fitted furniture work. I was very impressed with them; they’re not a Movento, but they’re less than half the price, and I don’t always need a Movento. 🤷‍♂️👍

  • @unitsevenworkshop

    @unitsevenworkshop

    @@10MinuteWorkshop I think that says a lot about the quality of the likes of Blum that you don't hear of failures, only time will tell if the rejs can match the longevity. Particularly when it comes to components of the soft close damper/mechanism. I'm very much on the quality > cost side when it comes to my cabinetry but you are totally right, a full extension with 3 way adjustment from Rejs is less than half the price of a tandem/movento and if you want depth adjustment you need to buy the extra adjusters.

  • @10MinuteWorkshop

    @10MinuteWorkshop

    Жыл бұрын

    Sorry you had trouble hearing; the audio on this video is identical to all others recorded on this microphone in the last 8 months or so, recorded in 24-bit, loudness normalised to -17LUFS - right between the [too quiet] EU Broadcast standard of -23LUFS and the [too loud] KZread recommended -14LUFS. Audio is monitored very carefully for consistency over the whole video so as not to introduce any surprises for the folks who listen through headphones, so if you're hearing something different then it's almost certainly at the playback stage, not something introduced during the creation eg playback on systems that are bass-heavy (eg Beats headphones) can make the audio seem less clear. Hope that helps. 👍
