This is exactly why i wanna learn dutch

As a Dutch language teacher I use a lot of these techniques with my students. So thank you for sharing this with so many people. You mentioned that someone can't learn a language with 5 minutes a day, and you are correct, but I always tell people to write down words they don't know and then write one or two sentences with one word! E.g. verbeteren = to improve. Ik verbeter mijn Nederlands. Hij verbetert zijn techniek. And that's it. After a few hours you do another one. The brain needs this kind of stimulation, I call it "tricking your brain". So instead of trying to have a long conversation during 30min to an hour during a day, try to say / write one or two sentences every 3 or 4 hours. More often than not, people tend to study an hour, once or maybe twice a week and think that will do it. (I say this as most people will look for excuses, not having time, ups I forgot, my boyfriend planned a day away etc etc.) My students put alarms on their phones (daily, 3 to 5 times a day), and will explain/write what they are doing at that particular moment. This way they focus on words of actions they actually can apply in their day to day, instead of focusing on words in books they most likely won´t use. This will only take 5 to 10 minutes, but will trigger the brain into thinking in Dutch and "not having time" has no business here. Obviously this is good practice for beginners up until A2. After that you won't need this anymore.

@@milliemcgrath5059 I recommend my students to use post-its in 2 very different colors (e.g. blue and yellow or orange and purple). Use one color for DE words and the other color for HET words. Most people are visual and will remember a color faster than De/Het. Also remember that words in plural (normal and diminutive) are always DE, and singular diminutives are HET.

it’s annoying when people always comment on the fluency of others. fluency can be subjective, but i believe fluency is when you can have clear and fluid conversations with native people about normal everyday things, when you can eavesdrop on conversations, when it comes naturally, when you can correct yourself, etc. that’s just me though.

Thank you! I was quite lost when trying to learn Dutch as I have no idea about the Netherlands culture and word. What drives me to learn the language is... I want to learn one and picked Dutch. And along the way I find the fun from the language and the place. Although there are no real emergency (having someone that I must communicate in Dutch) that push the progress, HAVING FUN is all one needs :) Your video has introduced me with many useful tools and interesting bits in the Netherlands which enriches my journey of learning Dutch.

I'm so glad I filmed myself even on days when I had lost motivation it was perfect to be able to look back on a video from a few weeks ago and hear the difference in how much I had improved or even how bad I still thought I sounded it was a great motivator to keep going xx

The idea of learning to associate the words with pictures is brilliant. It should be obvious, but it isn’t. I’m definitely going to incorporate this into my learning, thanks for the brain wave.

Have adhd and dyslexia but its my dream to live in the Netherlands, om going to go at this with all i got!! Im swedish* this video was helpful ❤

Started living in the Netherlands with my partner just over a month ago and I'm just as dedicated as you were to learning Dutch (as an Aussie myself) so I found this super super helpful!!! I'm using a mixture of Babbel and Duolingo to learn but also watching Dutch films and talking as much as I can in Dutch.

It's so weird hearing your Dutch; you have got pretty much no accent, which is very fucking impressive, holy shit. But then your sentence structure/grammar isn't on a native-speaker level yet, I have never heard somebody speak like that before. Also: you actually even have a somewhat Amsterdams accent, that's fascinating to me

structure and grammar are relative, it changes all the time and people use words however they want to, pronounce is the big deal here, if you speak fast enough without an accent people will not realize you're a foreigner even if you make lil mistakes

Casey, I love your videos. It is amazing how effectively you are able to pick up Dutch. I also started learning Dutch about a month ago and I highly highly recommend this book called "Basic Dutch: A grammar and workbook" by Jenneke A. Oosterhoff. This book can really help someone who wants a very systematic way of learning grammar. Btw keep making videos. xoxo

Another good series to practice Dutch is "Oogappels". I found it perfect while learning on the side words from the daily life. But well, while I am still far away from a fluent level, I was able to understand the series (with dutch subtitles) and enjoy it! :)

Great video and great tips. I would recommend Linguee instead of Google translate. Not only it lets you know if your word is an adverb, preposition, adjective... but also if it's a Het or De word. And huge advantage is that it puts the words in context by giving you examples.

Argh!! Speaking was my issue too! It's super intimidating because you have to think so quickly about what your saying plus listening to what the other person is saying...speaking was difficult. having my boyfriend (or a language partner) was key and also recording myself. I could literally hear the difference in my skill level and it motivated me to keep going 100%. I wish you all the luck I hope you can use some of these techniques. If you any questions regarding dutch resources or language learning stuff just let me know! I could talk about this stuff all day :)))

So many similarities, are you living in tassie or in the netherlands. My partners grandparents also don't understand any English and I remember it being a big motivator to let his family get to know me better if I could speak there language.

Its alot of rap and at first I found dutch music a little strange but I'm a massive fan now 👏 you can follow it or just pick the songs you like to add to your own playlist

Complimenten voor je fantastische video's. Ze zijn origineel, geestig en ook nog leerzaam (zelfs voor mij als Nederlander). Hilarisch vond ik de video waarin je je verwarring beschreef over het woordje "erg" ("het is erg met hem"). Af en toe spreek je Nederlands, weliswaar in korte zinnetjes, maar niettemin genoeg om te horen dat je uitspraak héél goed is. Je hebt een beetje een Rotterdamse tongval, wat ik leuk vind als iemand die daar vlakbij geboren is. Een paar opmerkingen nog. Voor mij is er nauwelijks verschil tussen "ineens" en "opeens". Je kunt die twee echt door elkaar gebruiken. Altijd goed. Mijn indruk is dat "opeens" misschien vaker in het Westen van Nederland wordt gebruikt, maar daarin kan ik mij vergissen. In plat Amsterdams zeg je trouwens niet "ineens", maar "in ene". Tweede puntje. Meervoudige persoonlijkheidssstoornis (dubbel s) zijn echt twee woorden. Niet aan elkaar schrijven dus. Voor mijn pensionering was ik als psycholoog werkzaam in de psychiatrie, dus je kunt zeker op mij afgaan. Gek vind ik wel dat wij persoonlijkheidsstoornis aan elkaar schrijven terwijl je in het Engels "personality disorder" (los van elkaar) schrijft.

40 years ago, there were not help from anyone, just cassettes, but it is so true, that radio, listening and tv watching helped me a lot ... awesome tips! ...I am still learning! LOL! thanks!

This video is the GOAT! First of all, congrats on learning Dutch in such a short amount of time! I speak conversational german because my dad and grandma are from Germany and I like to be able to communicate with them through their native language. How good is being able to speak another language! You'd be able to pick up Dutch in no time (if you even wanted to learn) with englosh and german umder your belt dutch would be a walk in the park! Im so glad our daughter will grow up bi lingual hopefully it emcourages her to learn even more languages when she's older

Hey! This is so good! Let that be the takeaway. But if you're open for some constructive criticism: (Now, if you already heard this a thousand times I apologize and ignore that I said anything, but) The thing I'd advice you to work on improving based on what I'm hearing now(in a 3 month old video so again, maybe "overbodig") is your sentence structure. You have an english mind so obviously you tend towards english sentence structure... but it works a bit differently in dutch. One example: "ik ga jullie vertellen over hoe ik heb zo snel een tweede taal geleerd" would actually be "ik ga jullie vertellen over hoe ik zo snel een tweede taal heb geleerd" heb in this case is perfectly fine in an english sentence structure but it stands out painfully in a dutch sentence. You do the same a moment later "waarom ik heb voor nederlands gekozen" why i have chosen for dutch... "waarom ik voor nederlands gekozen heb" why i chosen for dutch have. Again though, I am really incredibly impressed with your mastery. I just saw your video on sounding more dutch and you sound so incredibly natural

This is GREAT! feedback. Thanks so much :) I sometimes hear things or say things and just feel like they are not right but never know why or how to correct them. You have easily picked up on the way that I use dutch is still in a very heavily english manner. More practice and more listening should hopefully help this but thank you for your compliments too it certainly does wonders for encouragement and I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. ☺☺☺

That's really awesome you speak Dutch. I am 75% Dutch and my grandma and mom spoke fluent Dutch, but never wanted to teach me because they wanted to be able to say things in front of me so I wouldn't know what they were talking about. (Richie). Thank you for the info. Maybe I will give it a shot.

Oh you should totally give it a shot!!! To be far, now that we are currently in Aus me and my partner like being able to say things and no one know what we are saying haha! Learning dutch was one of the best things I've done and it has definitely inspired me to learn more languages especially now that I know it's possible. Thanks for watching guys

Isn't Friesian supposed to be the closest to English too?...like almost a sister language.That's what I've heard anyway.

I still cant pronounce the 'ui' sound properly lucky for me the 'g' wasnt a problem but the rolling 'r' 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ I just cant get it!! Hahaha hopefully with more practice we will both get the sounds right hahaha is you native language english too? I think it's hard to make those sounds for us cause they jusy don't exist in English 🤷‍♀️

I've been learning Dutch for around 18 months and I am no where near as proficient as you are! I blame my lack of progress on working full-time and not being able to travel to the Netherlands very often normally and even less so now. I'm also not a natural bluffer, I get incredibly anxious if I'm unsure of how to pronounce a word correctly to the point that I will always order a cup of coffee just to avoid any potential awkwardness. I'm sure I will get over this in time and it's incredible (and reassuring!) to see the progress you've made in such a short space of time. Great content, thank you!

Time is not particularly relevant to language learning but exposure is. You could study Dutch for 10 years and get nowhere as far as you would if you were in an isolated Dutch village for a year only speaking Dutch and nothing else. Also the video maker has the advantage that she is married to a Dutch person and lives there (exposure). If you have no one to speak to, you will not progress nearly as quickly.

Casey Kilmore It’s been more than a month now and I have listening to mostly Dutch raps from Boef and Lil kleint. I really miss when I used to say ‘Ik spreekt a beetje Nederlands’ 😂

I've been learning Dutch ever since I've been living in the Netherlands, which is 4 years now. Finding content in Dutch is... tough, really tough. I've been searching far and wide, asked many Dutch people and they were ALL (with only a couple of exceptions which came from older people), completely and utterly unable to give me the slighest recommandation. The amount of denigration of Dutch culture by young Dutch people is appaling. I often find myself to defend the beauty of the Dutch language against Dutchies themselves. Most of the time, when I start speaking Dutch people are quite impressed but mostly puzzled on why anyone would bother to learn such a useless and ugly language. I know I sound a bit harsh, and I apologize to any Dutch person that would disagree. But the reality is, this language is only so hard to learn because contrary to any other country, nothing pushes you to learn Dutch if you live in the Netherlands. I am the only expat I know who bothered to make an effort to learn. I know many people who have been living there for years and do not speak a word. Everyone will switch to English as soon as the conversation gets a bit slow because I'm searching for my words. There is basically little point to start any project in Dutch when you can hit a much wider audience by speaking English. All the content I now know and love was found all by myself after unending and ever-looping Google searches. I cannot thank you enough for all the content you put in the description, and I'm looking forward to hear more from you. I am putting here a list of different film directors, singers and KZread channels that I liked, if it might help you or anyone learning Dutch. -Boudewijn de Groot, my all time favorite Dutch singer. I have listened to his songs countless times and still do today. This may not be the cup of tea of many people, but I'm a great fan of French variety, so if you like this kind of thing you'll it. In the same style you can also listen to Ramsès Schaffy, Lisebeth List or even the Flemish version of some of Jacques Brel's repertoir that he translated. -If you prefer rock, give a chance to the Dijk a Dutch rock band. -This medieval-style song by this micro-band called t Brabants Kwartierke. They didn't do much, but I really like it. This one was tough to find, really. kzread.info/dash/bejne/hYZssamLf8-dc7Q.html -Kabouter Wesley, a flemish mini serie of absurd humor which is simply hilarious. It has the advantage of having every said sentence written on screen which is the holy graal of language learning, and of extreme rarity when it comes to the Dutch language. I've even written French subtitles to share it with my friends: kzread.info/dash/bejne/d2yGqcuCntqdpM4.html -Speaking of absurd humor, the youtube channel Kud is in the same vein. Some of their videos are subtitled in Dutch but not all of them. -Again in the absurd humor category De Speld, a satirical newspaper which also posts a few video on their youtube channel. -DrugsLabs, a KZread channel which speaks about drugs and drug intake. -Zondag Met Lubach, a very popular Dutch TV show news satire show which unfortunately stopped this year. Also available with Dutch subtitles most of the time ! -The Dutch part of the filmography of Paul Verhoeven. -Two other film directors: Dick Maas and Alex van Warmerdam. I don't know many more unfortunately. -On the video game side, Death Stranding and Zelda Breath of the Wild have been translated in Dutch. Link's Awakening on Gameboy also have a Dutch version which you can easily find the ROM online. I do not know if the remake was transalted though. If one of those was on your bucket list, it might be a good opportunity to practice. -Spongebob in Dutch. Kid shows are basically the only content that gets translated in Dutch consistently. Spongebob is one of the rare kid show which can still have some value as an adult viewer. -Disney movies also have a Dutch version ! I could probably think of more, but that's already a solid list. I may edit it in the future if I feel like it. In any case, thank you again for your work and I look forward to follow you.

Hello！do you think its necessary to learn Dutch if i want to work there？like do i need to know the language to help me get the job here at bigger chance？or its more depend on the jobs titles and industries？thanks ahead🤗

@@rebeccasun8438 @Rebecca Sun Hey ! It does depends of the industry and your advancement. There are opportunities in English and other language. I worked as a French customer support agent for exemple. My gf works at a university in an English speaking program. But the bulk of offers are indeed in Dutch, and you really need a high level to work there. I am currently looking for a job so I'm not entirely sure of how hard it is. I applied for Amazon who work in English but still requires me to have an intermediate level in Dutch. I passed a small online test and their answer is pending so I can't tell now. So in a nutshell: is it necessary? No. Does it opens doors? Yes a lot. If you want to chat about it I may be able to answer more questions via mail: luros.primal@gmail.com.

Oh yes!!! I would love to learn an asian language! I'm fascinated by languages and would love to learn another. I've definitely stop started with a few others but these techniques 100% helped me get to a place that I was happy with. Good Luck with japanese and I hope you use some of these tips to help you!

Voor nederlands leren? Zeg het in het nederlands is goed, eenvoudig en langzaam. Je kan ook transcripts voor de aflevering kopen zodat je kan lezen en luisteren op het gelijke tijd. Leven en gebruiksaanwijzingen is ook een goede, ze zijn kort en interessante onderworpen. Yous & yay new emotions is langer en meer van een echt gesprek met mensen maar ook goede onderworpen en goed om meer een natuurlijke conversatie to horen.
