Really like seeing how you apply the resin as finish. Haven't tried that yet but really want to do so. You know, thousands of years from now, some archeologist is going to dig that cup up and wonder what weird rituals the people "back then" practiced. 😄

That 'how I do it' tutorial was really interesting Doug as I've been thinking I'd try some resin finishes but I wasn't sure how to do it. I'd be interested in seeing some more tutorial videos if you're ever in the mood to do some more. Many thanks for such an interesting video.

I finish most of my projects with extreme resin on a modified cup turner. Extreme resin has a gel time of 40 mins. The cup turner is super slow so I can flood pour the resin and brush out. Give that about 12 hrs and flood again (no sanding). Bonus...the cup turner is on a pivot from 0 degrees to 90 degrees. As the flood coat will run due to gravity I can change the direction of flow by angling up or down. It is exactly like watching paint dry but easier than sand recoat sand recoat. Final result is the dipped in glass look. I usually give the extreme resin a few days to cure. Overall I like extreme resin better than total boat. I get far less bubbles without the pressure pot and undetectable with pressure. By the way you are the reason I got addicted to resin. Love your work and tips.

Thank you Jeff, I know total Boat is not as good for this sort of thing over something else, I have to be careful of all that, they do supply me with all that resin, I have recently gotten some art resin and I have to do a collab video with it for the company, I will see how this stuff works as apposed to TB, but I still have to use the TB in my turning project, it could just not say but then people would think this when it's really that.
The refinish looks great, buddy!

I love your work, and your joy in creating. The finished products are top notch. You’re fun to listen to. But mostly i really appreciate your willingness to point out problems with individual pieces and projects, and how you solve them. I have learned much from your instruction, and have found your tips practical. Thank you. I’ve been turning mixed media pieces and applying resin to turnings and furniture for a couple of years now, largely inspired by you. This is a great example of sharing your work arounds to problem projects, and let’s not fool ourselves….. all projects have a flaw somewhere.

You'll probably get a lot of unhappy viewers, but I really enjoyed the real time process, Doug. Love that goblet. My resin is getting old, but it cures much harder than it should. I have used resin for a finish on plain wood and composite wood/resin bowls. I like the end results but it does take me a long time. I’ve had issues with resin not setting completely too - with the resin I use, I think it is the resin ageing, not the hardener. Once the resin has been opened, it’s only about 3 months before I have issues.

Great to see this goblet again. This resin finish is awesome, just beautiful. I do something similar when doing my nails. With the normal glossy finish there are sometimes lackluster spots or tiny bubbles on the surface, so I do my finish with a finishing gel instead, which is also a uv resin. Much better and more durable! And I love it when you are teaching things in vour videos. I´m learning so much that I will definitely buy a lathe when I´m retiring. Thanks for your time and passion!

Doug, waiting a week was worth it to see the solution and the finished piece. It looks really nice! Just curious what the "cheat code" is to get your lathe to turn that slow. I know there is a "hack" where you can adapt a BBQ rotisserie to turn the lathe from the other end of the motor that works quite well. As a side note - it was interesting to see how the spaces in the cole jaws allowed you stickers on the nose of the lathe to show up as ghost images on the silver plate as it turned.

Bones, who’d’a thunk it? Will the resin seal them enuf so the decay process will stop? Really neat idea - wonder how another one, black with swirls of iridescent and bleached white bones would be? Really cool shape, goes well with a kind of older times, where magic and wizards weren’t so rare. Nice job.
@PohlBarnProductions

That is why I stabilized them, they should be solid plastic after that, that's an interesting Idea
why not make some wooden jaws that are used only when applying the resin finish? And wax the surface of the chuck too, or put some release agent on it?

That resin finish turned out great! I’ve only ever done a top coat on the flat top and edges of molded pieces and end tables. It seems like doing an entire piece is a bit tricky. Have you ever tried those silicone brushes for a resin finish? There not really a brush because they don’t have bristles, pretty much just a flat piece of silicone at the end of a stick. I’m just curious, I have no idea if they’d work or not on a 3D piece. I do like them for coating smaller pieces. Great tutorial Doug!

I do show how to do it in a video Red, but I'm not sure which one it was,
Cool! Might the guy who made your logo coins be willing to supply you with the program to engrave your own now that he's has retired?
Do you keep the lathe running at 50 rpm while the resin finish is curing? I’ve heard to do that to prevent it from running. Also, why do you only go to 40psi on the pressure pot? All I’ve watched, and little I’ve played, goes to 60psi. Wouldn’t the higher pressure make the bubbles smaller? I’m just curious why you do how you do? I really love your work. I don’t have much experience with resin, trying to learn. Levi
@PohlBarnProductions
Жыл бұрын
yes leave it running, I actually go to 70 psi but the manufacture rating is for 40 on that pot so I do not suggest you go over it, or it can't come back on me that I suggested it
