This was such a refreshing talk after a long time for me. Hearing people from such a range of fields discuss on storytelling! Putting together some of my favourite moments from this episode for me to revisit, might help anyone else too :) 2:48 how a small childhood story became the root of Jane's life's purpose. Parenting with patience and understanding, can be invaluable for a child. - every person deserves to have their own "young scientist" story: Asking questions. Not getting the right answer. Trying out yourself. Making mistakes. Not giving up. Learning patience. 8:38 fooling oneself is very easy, especially with societal validation. A realisation the lucky ones have later, like Terry did. 9:58 a psychologist's take - storytelling precedes language. It's a simulation of reality to learn to tackle challenges, make meaning of who we are, and a mode to understand each other. It's so important for individuals, especially children, to have someone who truly believes in them. That can be the biggest driver for one's story. 12:40 For Jane, it was her mother who did not let the patriarchal society dominate her dreams. 14:27 For Terry, it was his teacher who applied for his scholarships without even letting him know. 19:30 successful people are unembarrassed, unlike the ideal super-masculine or perfect person persona. This allows them to take action. If a mistake is made, they aren't embarrassed to take accountability, learn and improve. 20:55 one the best parts of this episode. A story on how arrogance turns to humility. Just like Terry, everyone needs that "it broke something" arc in their story to break free from the shackles of arrogance and take accountability. 24:02 Jane's multi-personality theory is helpfull to maintain a balance between your real self and the "one on a mission". 24:56 Purpose - a place where "what brings you gladness" intersects with "the hunger of the world". Purpose at some point needs to contribute to "generativity" - the want to leave behind something positive for the next generation. 30:40 as parents, it's important to maintain balance between giving wisdom to your children in advance, AND letting them try, fall and figure out themselves. And when teaching, it's more effective to teach through a story. 32:09 personally, i loved Jane's perspective here. Dying is the last big adventure in everyone's life, since you delve into the unknown, alone. 34:55 ...so is there a meaning to life? Each of us has a role to play, each of us matters, each of us can make a difference.

As someone who is currently training to be a teacher, hearing Terry talk about his teacher who believed in him makes me want to cry. One day I want to be that teacher to someone. I hope I can be.

18:43 "You talk openly about dealing with and navigating your own insecurity... and arriving at a place where you had this fundamental, essential confidence in yourself... where over time you are realising that the only person you have to please and satisfy is yourself - and then you can be enough for the people around you." Profound quote.

It's nice to see how Terry "made it". I met him as a teenager in the mid-80's as he ran with my brother. We lived on Kellar and Dayton around the corner from his house on Winona. I was home on leave from the Army when my brother brought him by the house.

Exquisitely delivered - I loved this exploration of the contribution of story telling to the making of Meaning. It highlights the ultimate paradox that each of us lives in every moment: 1 - every story is a fiction, a completely subjective fabrication with no intrinsic value. We make it up, start to end from building blocks we select for their fit to the narrative we want to shape. It fuels the preposterous self absorbed selfie stick tapestries of the social media metaverse. It creates the context in which every fascist justifies and ferments the darkest evils of the world. It supports the devout monk through years of privation. 2 - it surfaces purpose and the construction of beauty in the face of a meaningless world and the inevitable grind towards oblivion of the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Now I am going to watch it again to learn more and reflect more. I expect nothing less than life change. Beautiful work. Thankyou so much. 🙏🏻🌼🙏🏻

This series is the gift that keeps on giving. You’re exploring many of the questions I’ve grappled with in my life. I once worked in public radio, exploring similar questions about meaning and purpose-which itself felt like it was my meaning and purpose. Nowadays I don’t know what my meaning and purpose are necessarily-maybe this series is prompting me to think more about it-but I know I have to write my values, and I want to create something beautiful that can touch human hearts. Because it is scary-not only “the state of the world” (whatever topical way you interpret that) but the state of being human. I wonder if the series will contended with these: fear and suffering. What do we do with those? Not to wallow in those things or to be sensationalistic, but it’s indeed part of an equation that includes awe, curiosity, humility, and beauty.

One episode better than the other. I have a STEM background, but I sure respect more the creative people in this episode than the pragmatic physicists from episode 2 that don't allow themselves to express half-rigorous ideas, that's why my favorites eps until now are 3 and this one

Good point. It’s very important to be appropriately detached from scientific knowledge in order to be humble enough to learn. Counter-intuitive, chaotic systems underly much of our world and it’s very easy to cling to what’s “proven” as a means of coping with the unknowable mysteries that surround us.
