Random Fact: Marine Parade was the largest Land Reclamation project in singapore's history, The coastline was extended by to 15KM out. Everything left of Nicoll Highway was nothing but water before this extension happened.

Amazing episode 👍 Keep retelling these histories so that future generations are made aware of their Singaporean heritage.

Such a gem of a nuanced historical storytelling…uplifting and sad at the same time. Kudos to the production team.

50 years ago, Changi Beach was the go-to place for over-night camping during the school holidays. Those were happy and fun days for teenagers.

I think the area in front of fort canning was reclaimed from sea since the view is not the same as from a painting during the colonial years where fort canning was facing the sea which isn't now.

If based on the fact our land reclamation comes from flattening Bedok and Tampines, the government ought to be selling it more rather than have people claim they sell us sand to reclaim East Coast.

We're forever grateful ! 🇸🇬 Singapore had to sacrifice a few small hills for land reclamation projects in order to accomodate growing population ! More reclamation projects will be rolled out in the coming years !

CNA's documentaries about Singapore are exceptional.

I would stand at the edge of a seawall and Lookout in to the Hudson 🌊 🌊🌊years later that area of water was reclaimed by land many neighborhoods and skyscrapers 🌊🌊🏙🌃🏙🌊 🌊 The world trade centers were built on this new land, and I was there running for my life the day they fell. I still can’t believe they’re gone 🥺🥺😕 I’m only 40 years old and alot of Manhattan has changed in those years Its amazing how much humans can change the landscape

I should know the costs as I lived there at Bedok Beach and I lost my playground but the fact is while cutting down the hills of Changi, Bedok and Chai Chee, using the sand to reclaim the coastline made sense. We built thousands of HDB homes in Bedok and Chai Chee which still stands there today. We built lots of homes at Marine Parade which still stands there today. The loss of the old seafront gave way to a new seafront, and we built lots of homes. Good decision.

Roughly 92% of our coastline is all reclaimed by now. How sad

Edit: and more importantly, I see how well run the City state is, low taxes, low crime, high property ownership rates, amazing and cheap public transport, high incomes, great education, good healthcare, long life expectancy, beautiful parks and public spaces, sustainable budget, huge reserves in the sovereign wealth funds and so on. These are the facts, are they not?

@@ordoabchao4202 You can sing their praises when they hold a public forum. Meanwhile, You need to open your eyes and see how PAP is true example of a corrupted and authoritarian state. Doesn't it seem peculiar there is not a single bad light shown on PAP on any news media, internet & on the street except those naive and heckcare opposition clowns during the elections. they may be uneducated and ignorant but they cant express thier true opinons because of thier books. FYI, whatever you read up I can find on google myself, its all censorship these days. Its the otherside of politics you & the public dont want to see and its being made almost impossible to be found. And dont lie to yourself by saying there is none because PAP is a such a saint, thier our saviour.... Dont do that to yourself. DOnt be like the rest of the public which just want to think SG is all sunshine and rainbows because it isnt. And when PAP finally reveals who they are, its already too late.

@@Woedeiii I sing praise, because the story of Singapore is one of success and achievent. Is anything I said wrong? I am really curious to hear the best critique of the Singapore system. Authoritarian? Yes, it is. But it's working, isn't it? Corrupt? Probably some politicians are, as everywhere, but definitely less in Singapore than most places on earth including the developed world. The Singapore government massively elevated the prosperity of its citizens over the past 57 years. The economic freedom and good education also gives them the freedom and ability to leave for other places if they don't like itvin Singapore, which some do. What is your grief? That there are corrupt people in government? Newsflash: that is the case everywhere and always throughout history. Which country do you think is better run than Singapore?
