What's Behind Rise In Anti-Asian Hate Crime In UK? | Undercover Asia | CNA Documentary

COVID-19 has triggered waves of attacks on Asians around the world. The UK reported a three-fold rise in hate crimes on its East and Southeast Asian community in the early months of the pandemic. Now, two years into the global health crisis, correspondent Wei Du returns to Britain to find out if people who look like her are still living in fear, and what it would take to stop Asian hate in Britain. In the process, she also discovers the long history of racist attitudes towards Asians in the UK, and how the community is finally determined to fight back.

Why they have to? Is being Asian your excuse or the only ID? Not everyone got to stuck up on Lefty concept in Diversity Salads mixed with ketchup and mayo when all they can identify is JUST SALADS..No ketchup!! Will you eat anything even when you got choked off so you wont get called as racist? The way you view Christian as Religion ONLY is already striking different. Christian is similar to Asian as ID. Wei Du said she only recently saw Asian hate in Britain. But the fact is, Asian racism (and racism, in general) has always been in British society for generations. If Wei Du didn't witness it before, that's because it was lurking beneath the surface, waiting for a trigger. That trigger was COVID-19. Another possible trigger is China's frightening rise as an economic world power.

This involved verbal abuse, idiots trying to pick fights and throwing stones and snowballs packed with jagged ice, being chased through streets at night by thugs yelling racist insults etc. Most of the perpetrators were white men, but I’ve also faced racist abuse from black people and South Asians. So have many of my Chinese and Japanese friends. East Asians have suffered violent racist abuse long before the pandemic.

Same here in Australia. For my experience as an Asian student, I’ve been facing racism too since the rise of Covid. I’m from Kyrgyzstan but people think I’m Chinese just because of my mongoloid look. People think Covid comes from Asian people in general. For my experience, I’ve never been attacked but instead I’ve been pushed and yelled at mostly about Covid and China’s problems in their country and sometimes they would bump my shoulder real hard with a strong force sometimes on a train and a street. Of course, I wasn’t a coward. I just didn’t want to have a problem with them and continued ignoring them. For my friends who are Vietnamese, Malaysian and Filipino, a couple weeks ago a group of teenagers threw a battle of water at their heads telling them to go back to their countries and complaining about China’s problems that have nothing to do with them. My friends didn’t want to waste their time fighting back and explaining to them so they left. I can’t believe ignorant people still exist in a first world country.

Let's see:- we've lost all our manufacturing because China offered labour and production costs that we just couldn't compete with. They are ravaging the oceans of marine life vital to nearby poorer nations. They allowed their citizens to travel abroad AFTER knowing Covid was beginning to spread. When our government called for an investigation into the origins, the CCP reacted like a child. They have invaded Tibet and want to invade Taiwan. They own real estate, ports, farms and critical infrastructure in Australia against the wishes of the locals. Granted, it's primarily the fault of our useless leaders. But with all these dynamics occurring simultaneously, I just can't imagine why some of us are 'waysist'. China tells us not to interfear in it's internal affairs..........as it has spies and students stealing technology from under our noses. Most people in the West are reasonable and decent people. But when things happen around us that we don't like, we have a right to question it, and be angry about it without being falsely labeled.

I've been in the UK throughout the pandemic. Whenever I am outdoors now, there is still fear of encountering racism and being unable to respond to any such macro/microaggressions. I also feel as if I am being made more aware of how different I am for being of Asian descent. That being said, I have met a lot of lovely, diverse people here in the UK - racism exists everywhere, including in my home country... we need to encourage people to speak up about racist encounters, validate their feelings & give them support (but also be careful not to pin every issue on racism) - thanks for this video!

I am Filipino Australian, lots of racism here too. Racism will never go away due to narrow-mindedness of some people. Despite how we look the colour of our skin, we bleed blood the same. The funny thing is, racist people still eat Asian or other ethnic food type and cook the food in their home. 🥴 Mind you there are other ethnic or asian countries who are racist toward those not their kind. Life is so short, get on with it. Just try to be kind, respectful and try to see God in others. Our highest goal really is how we impact others in this life and that will we have a ticket to heaven. Be kind others to people!

I meet people from all over the world, and have found that the majority of people are friendly and kind. We are interested in our different religions, foods, traditions etc. It’s great learning about cultures and people. The tiny amount Iv had bad experiences with, Iv taken the time to correct them and explain that they have it very wrong. They should be smarter and not follow what others do and say. I moved to the UK last year and had already experienced racism. I was in the park with my daughters, as I was sitting down and group of teenagers walked passed me and one of the boy said to me “ching ching ching”. I was shocked and didn’t know how to react. His friend told him to stop while laughing. Last week I was walking to a restaurant in high street with my family. We walked pass a pub, there were many people drinking outside of the pub, they look like pupils from the university nearby, a group of smoking / drinking pupils saw us and started talking about “racist” and laughed. I didn’t hear what exactly they were talking about but it made me feel really sad. That night after the dinner I felt unsafe going to get our car through walking high street. In this modern world, the children should be more educated about races. The lady who claimed to be nationalist is upset about different races settling in the UK. What would she think if a white family settled in an Asian country and was unwelcome by the locals? To be honest, white people are very welcomed in my own country, why can’t she be the same?

To be honest, this doesn't strike me as surprising at all. I've always felt that there's a large amount of racism towards Chinese/Japanese/Korean i.e. East Asian people in the UK. If you were to have lived in the UK in the past 10 years, pretty much anywhere outside of London (where you'd have the option of never seeing a non-Asian person), you'd definitely have experienced some form of racism. Interestingly, I don't see it come from the older generation since most of them are far too polite to open their mouths and say something idiotic like that but the younger generation of Brits I feel to be disrespectful, angry and basically disenfranchised. I don't know if its all pervasive or only in the areas where I happened to be, which, admitedly, were mostly working class to maybe middle class places. (Do note that when I refer to Chinese I just use that as a blanket word to include Japanese, Korean, Malaysian, Singaporean and other related but distinct cultures. This is not a comment on race or whatever, it's just easier than having to type out Korean/Japanese/Chinese. I would use the word 'Asian' but 'Asian' in the UK refers mostly to our South Asian brothers of mostly Indian descent. Note 2: I'm using the word "English" because my experience is in England. ) If you were to ask me to speculate on why this is the case, I'd wager that this is because of a few reasons. Chiefly being what is mentioned by one of the ladies here in this video in that whereas other minorities have reached a critical threshold where English have to pay attention to them just due to their numbers, the Chinese have not reached that level yet, population wise. Secondly, culturally, there is the Chinese belief of the iron rice bowl which is to say that they'll tolerate all sorts of abuse and all sorts of attacks so long as it doesn't affect the bottom line of their survival i.e. their livelihood. Lastly, there is a cultural divide. Like the Jews in Europe, the Chinese tend to stick to themselves and keep their heads down low so that they "won't be seen as making trouble." It's related to the second reason that I mentioned but also has the effect of them becoming very successful in businesses etc. That and the fact that there is a huge emphasis on education in Chinese culture also helps ensure their success. The point is that Chinese people do not have a voice and do not have the political power nor push to ensure real change. Lastly, due to the above reasons, there still is not very much contact between the Chinese populace and the English populace. You'd be surprised by how many Brits don't know simple things such as when Chinese New Year is or even what Diwali is about. The latter being extremely shocking considering that Leicester has the biggest Diwali celebration outside of India and that maybe 8% of the population is South Asian. When there is little contact between the communities and between the people, there is a lot of mistrust which can turn into something more dangerous over the years. I would have hoped that in the decade that I've left the country, things would have gotten better but it really seems like they're instead regressing. Hopefully it doesn't regress further and give into far right nationalism because that's the first step down a very very slippery slope.

The foundation of this problem lies in the same place as many of the world problems. The lack of a good foundation in philosophy, psychology and debate in education. It is honestly impressive how well politicians, CEO's and religious leaders have thought us that we should leave such things up to them. Their tactics are no longer working that well due to the internet, many of the younger generation are finding their way to these subjects online. I just fear it won't be enough, we have many difficult, global, issues we all need to deal with. Otherwise this planet might not stomach us for much longer. Actually discussing emotions such as hate, anger and fear and giving our children tools to better deal with them through a basis in psychology would make a huge difference. Especially if you combine that with discussions on morals and ethics in a format that uses the many skills found in debate. We humans have the people, the researched, the knowledge, experience and technology. What we now need more than anything else is the wisdom to use it responsibly. I think we can all agree leaving this just to the politicians, CEO's and religious leaders isn't working out that well.

To combat such abuses, every Asian community should organize and support legal/advocate centers with teams of lawyers to bring these abusers to courts of law and sue each of these abuses to effect their financial well being. Even those who have no money to pay, they will have to work to meet financial responsibilities for their abuses by installments. Only when abusers realized that if the cases of racial abuses are harder to prove because of western societal bias. At least simple assaults once found guilty in courts would cause financial responsibility to cover medical costs for the abusers, it would be a deterrence . Moreover, the abusers also get a criminal record which would also make them think twice to not simply hurt someone for being of a different skin color. This may also encourage other minority groups to join such legal advocate organizations.

Being white British I feel deeply saddened for my own country on hatred such as this. My home city is particularly multicultural and I’ve always loved trying new foods from Asian food markets. I remember there being a boycott on these places during the height of covid and sadly being advised to avoid them by people I knew. My best friend of Japanese heritage also had her fair share on insults. Although I think it predominantly comes from a place of ignorance and fear, that is no excuse and although we are more diverse than many countries we have a long way to go

Please wake up, this country was built by looting rest of the world. They just conveniently leave that out of your history books. Multiculturalism is not only about trying the cuisine, but it's a start.

@@aryavishwanathan4662 I’m saddened you feel this way. At no point did I say that it was JUST about the cuisine, but I deem KZread an unsuitable place for an essay. I read into your statement “please wake up” that you perhaps deem me ignorant. That in itself is rather judgemental. I cannot help being English and supposedly “different” to you, nor should I feel ashamed to be. It is true about the history of this country. What came before was full of prejudice, hatred and violence. Both from this country and globally too. The modern world was built on war. Unfortunately, this still continues. We are only now beginning to open our eyes, respect each other and herald our individuality, but I agree, it is only a start. Perhaps we need to assess our behaviour in the present day to look towards changing things for the future instead of blaming the English alive now on what others did long before- regardless of culture.

@@rubycat23 sorry if that came across as being too aggressive, but you should know that billions are stuck in poverty even today for Europeans to enjoy a life of luxury. The UK still celebrates Churchill who was the reason hundreds of thousands starved to death during the Bengal famine(please Googlet this if you want to know more). We suffered for hundreds of years, and your country still expects our people to face racism even today.... just remember, the power ride is shifting quickly.

@@aryavishwanathan4662 I also know that 10000s people in countries such as Bangladesh and the Philippines are displaced and homeless due to flood waters, or that heatwaves and wet-bulb temperatures in India are so high 1000s are dying as it is too hot/humid for the human body to survive and the infrastructure is too poor to help combat it. All to do with climate change caused by humans. Chinas economy has grown so much, yet 2/3s of the population are still in such poverty they can’t afford to eat and many abandon their children in search of work in the cities. It’s an unjust world. But, I will certainly go and learn more about the Bengal famine. What I mean to say is, I may not know lots, but I am certainly not ignorant either, so don’t automatically judge me so. Not every European lives a life of luxury. I myself live below the poverty line. It may not be at quite the same level, but certainly not luxury when your bills are more than your income. You sound like you really care about equality and the world we live in, just as I do so I respect it, but please, your views really make it sound like myself and my culture are all ignorant racist folk and we are the only ones to blame for the state of the rest of the world. This is not the case. There are some very cruel people out there- the subject of my original comment, but I promise we are not all like that and I hold on to the hope that things improve, just as I hope, in time you have better experiences so it doesn’t feel that way. It hurts my heart when I hear the cruelty inflicted simply due to a difference in culture or skin colour

If you read about it without bias, you will never respect him again.

How fragile, scared, and dumb do you have to be to turn violent towards innocent civilians for literally no reason. People need to stop acting like dumb animals and actually use their brains for other reasons than to discriminate, hate, and attack.

The Vietnamese government support their citizen small amount of money as a courtesy and that also including us as foreigners too. The local peoples share their food to us too. It was amazing gestures and we are really appreciated. Thanks to them and it's SUPERIOR! Then we learnt about these racist incidents and it's sad and upsetting. This shows their INFERIOR!

I have to agree. My family came from Greece and my gran said that coming to the UK was the worst decision our family made. You have to integrate and inter marry into that culture and in the process you loose your own. If you don't, you become isolated in later life and feel that you do not belong. I blame globalization and capitalism for this.

A male friend of mine (British-born Chinese) is in an interracial relationship with a young British woman. They never had any problems until a few cases recently, like getting harassed. A woman got called "ch#nk lover", and later, a friend of mine received some horrible remarks like "Why can't you find your own kind?". That was during the Covid time. To this day, they're still together, as happy as they are. Both of them are on a high-earning career. If you're in an interracial relationship, don't like racist people discouraged you. No one but you is responsible for your happiness. I'm a British-born Chinese too, and as I grew up in the UK, I find most British people friendly. Sad to say, I encountered some racism, but it was mainly from the youth. AND... some ethnic minorities in the UK can be racist too!
