How Guanajuato Became Guanajuato

Most visitors know Guanajuato for its culture, color, restaurants and plazas. But many do not know how Guanajuato became Guanajuato. In this video I reveal stories and folk lore shared by the locals who live it.

Andy - I am so happy that you found Manuel and that he is still healthy and active! Thanks for sharing this and for the shout out to me! My wife and I went for a fantastic walking tour with Manuel in March of 2018. It looks like he told you a few of the same stories that he told us - and you are the perfect raconteur to pass the stories along (even sitting sideways in your chair). I really enjoy and appreciate the respect and enthusiasm that you demonstrate for Mexico. We did not visit the hacienda or the other perimeter attractions - so now we have to go back! PS - I would also be interested to know where you hiked from Pipila - we walked around the upper bowl - but did not think of going up from the statue. Happy Holidays!

@@Vancouver_Dan I didn’t get to include the rest of the hike story but I was never able to find a path above Pipila like Manuel suggested. I guess that gives ME another reason to find Manuel again.

Others that I follow, JC Travel Stories, Jerry Brown Travels, Bill the computer Geek. All of your channels have been a huge help making this move much easier. @@timelesstravelclub6240 Thanks for the reply Andy , you’re always welcome to come visit me in Guanajuato . You turned me on to a hotel in Guanajuato and I have been renting a place from the owner for about 3 years now . It does start to feel small there after a while, and it can get cold. I would then go to my adopted Mexican family hotel in Zihua I have known for 18 years , I have to have my beach. I lived in Mexico for 20 years in October. I started in Cabo.. I gave up my apartment in Zihua let’s say during the diaper over the mouth time. Volaris air had cheap flights to Zihua but no more they stoped the flights no customers. We are about the same age but the heat there can really wear me down it didn’t before. My friend said try PV it’s a little cooler,I went there about a month ago the last time I was there was 2005 I think it lost its charm and its a lot more expensive ! I am from the U.S. like you and I know how much you love Mexico ! My friend will retire in 97 days yes he is counting , he would visit in the winters when there was no work and go to Zihua. It’s sad that a lot of snow birds I new and got older and are not returning, Time seams to be going faster like a small roll of toilet paper ja ja. Sorry for the long story but you feel like an old friend. I have been in bed in the U.S. with pneumonia tomorrow back to the doctor I’m a little better. I got sick when I returned from PV to Guanajuato The doctor thinks I got pneumonia because food got stuck in my right lower lung. Hola, Don Andrés: This was enjoyable as always. One place I hope to visit as soon as the pandemic dies back is Guanajuato. Speaking of that, perhaps you can clarify something for me. I speak Spanish and I learned from Mexicans as I grew up. I learned to pronounce Guanajuato with the "G" just like Guadalajara. Interesting... I had to look at several videos from GTO made by Mexicans to hear how they say it. I could hear the G pronounced in only one. If the others say it, I think it’s very subtle. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. Now I will be listening very closely.

  • @drg8034

If I may add something. In spanish there is really no difference between G and W. The W was only incorporated into spanish so we could properly write Germanic names, but one could argue the w sound is non-existent in spanish. I have never met a mexican who can properly say Washington instead of Guashington haha. I have now been trying to pronounce it as Uashington and it seems to sound a lot better. This reminds me of a couple years ago when I used to date this chinese woman, she would ask me if the spanish Ch was either pronounced as sh, ch or zh and all of them sounded about right to me at first, but after a while I could tell them apart.
