The '90s to mid-2000s produced some of the toughest men in football history but one man, arguably more than the others, truly earned his reputation as a “hard man.” This same player controlled a midfield that had Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, and David Beckham. That man was Roy Keane.
In his prime, he was as aggressive as they come and also a true leader but what many fans do not know is how technical and excellent other areas of his game were

People always discuss who is the best midfielder in EPL history. Scholes, Lampard or Gerrard. In the modern era you could put KDB in the list. But to me, Keane is the greatest midfielder in EPL history. He was the engine of the team and dominated the centre of the pitch in a way I've never seen anyone come close to.

@@Westlondon122 you've clearly never heard of false modesty. Keane doesn't brag about his ability, in interviews he says he was very fortunate to have good team mates around him but the truth is, he was a supreme player. You might be confusing his lack of flair for a lack of ability. Scored crucial goals, fantastic range and weight of pass, kept possession whilst passing forward most of the time, critical interceptions and robust tackling - what more do you want? Name 5 better players in his position. Name one who came away with getting the better of him when you tally up the matches against each other - I can help you out by eliminating a few names because Keane dominated the head to heads with the likes of Vieira, Gerrard, Davids and co. Put some respect on his name.

Even after all this time I still re-watch that semi-final match against Juve and even now to this day watching Keane during that match sends shivers down my spine. That performance that night should go down as one of the greatest individual performances of one player during a match of all time, in the same shadow as Maradona against England in '86, Rossi against Brazil '82 and Zidane against Brazil in '98.

This is how good Roy Keane was, he had a career threatening injury, returned a year later and was one of the driving forces in helping Man Utd win the treble during a time when Squads were still a new thing, so keeping players fit was crucial, in a time in Europe where the big clubs in Europe really were monsters. Imagine having to fight in 3 fronts where arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, back home, in Europe you fighting Barcelona, juventus, inter Milan, Bayern Munich were the constant challengers, that’s without contending with ac Milan, Roma, Florentino and the European champions Real Madrid. But yeh that’s his strong the competition was, if you avoid Real Madrid Barcelona are ready for you, you avoid ac Milan there was Inter Milan and juventus coming for you that had in the Italian league in Ronaldo, zidane, David’s and didier deschamps, there was no hiding and no easy route when too many clubs were that good

Keane made every player play out there skin! I fundamentally disagree that you couldn’t build a team around Keane. You kind of miss the point of everything you said - his positioning, the metronome like passing, knowing when to go and when to hold, and his leadership - that’s literally what you’re building around. If he played today, he would be the perfect single pivot in a possession oriented team or an 8 in a gegenpressing 4-3-3. He sits in the middle of the pitch, the foundation of the spine - then you build around him.
