I could never understand how Keane was never knocked out. Not as hard as he makes out plenty players would take care of him

If you read Vinnie Jones' autobiography, he states the hardest player he ever came up against was former Sunderland captain Kevin Ball. Never saw him shirk a tackle and scared the pants off a lot of his opponents (Met him a few times off field and what a lovely bloke though!). Still remember to this day him taking out Paul Ince in a 50:50 after a couple of minutes of a Sunderland vs Man Utd game, Ince rolled around like he had been shot, Bally just stood over him and told him to get up. Ince went in to his shell for the rest of the game which Sunderland won 2-1

I always remember Roy Keane backing down from Andy "Tyson" Myers in a game v Chelsea.

Duncan Fergusons 1st by a mile , 2nd Graham Souness . but in the late 70s for me is Jinky Jim Smith born in the gorbals of Glasgow a very very nasty hard man, played for Newcastle and Scotland .

Jink Jim Smith, are you sure? He rarely broke sweat when he played. Although in your defence I remember him being sent off in the first minute of a game v Birmingham City, for a truly shocking leg breaking challenge. And that was in the days when they had to be truly shocking challenges to get a red card.

Souness didn't want to know when Garth Crooks nutted him and slapped Dalgliesh after Souness had stomped on Glenn Hoddle in charity shield at Wembley 1982. I am a fan of Souness though I wasn't back then as I felt there was real arrogance in that side and he deserved what he got from Crooks that day. He was a top player, good manager and good pundit though I thought he was disrespectful to Roy Keane during last world cup, for what its worth if Crooks had ever nutted Roy Keane, the latter would not have backed off. Bumped into Garth Crooks about 20 years ago at a cash point on Kingston Hill, lovely bloke.

“In Ferguson’s early days at Rangers..” 🙄 He spent 1 season there…played on 14 games…this wasn’t his “early days”. This was his big move. His early days were at Dundee United where he came through the youth teams, played 77 games and scored 28 goals over 3 senior seasons

The hardest footballer I ever saw was Dave Mackay. He would have mangled Keane and also many of the so-called hard men featured here.

When talking about football hard men You cannot throw Shearer and Viera in the same conversation with Big Dunc. I sincerely beliieve Keane wasn't affraid of either of those two. I would have thrown Eric Cantona in as a wild card. Having seen a lot of the Overlap the way he speaks about Cantona seems like a respect born through a certain fear of him. It's one thing to challenge another player to a fight. To take on the Palace fans with a Karate kick is a different level of crazy.

Have ever seen Vinnie Jones against Terry Hurlock at Millwall, he never went anywhere near him at any time ever.

John Fashanu was as big as Duncan Ferguson, nasty, and a trained martial artist, much like Zlatan. So if we’re talking fight tough, one of them is possibly the hardiest. If we’re talking hard tackling, Kenny Burns was brutal!

Keane is the best defence midfielder in prem history just a solid presence he never thought he was tough was a leader the best but Duncan and vinny were on another level seriously tho big Duncan hardest I’ve seen

not sure about that, tbh......he was good, but there's a lot of competition for that title.....and as for Duncan Disorderly, he had mental issues which I've heard he has now come to terms with.....

For hardmen of football you just cant look past Billy Whitehurst. Tough as nails, after football went into gypsy bare knuckle boxing for a while.

Vinnie jones was a mug talk about hand picking people to pick on. Neil ruddock another mug, tbh I don’t think Keane was scared of anyone especially Frenchmen but think everyone gave big dunk a wide berth. Though tbh to Martin keown he battled with him as did stam but you never see anyone mouthing back at Duncan, well Paul sharper did and then got folded.

You're narration is spot on, of all the facts of these incidents

If I had to pick one that Roy Keane genuinely seemed to try and avoid on the pitch, it was Duncan Ferguson. But hard as he and the likes of Vinnie Jones were, these guys were as soft as putty in comparison to the real hard men of the past. I can't speak for the era before the 70s but can remember the hard men of that era and literally every team had at least one.

Alf Ramsey - clearly no mug - realised Nobby Stiles was the hardest one of all, hence his being in the World Cup winning team. Nobby would have sorted Vinnie Jones out in seconds, possibly permanently. PS Another immensely tough man - a usually overlooked part of his genius - was George Best. He NEVER flinched from a 50/50 ball and always gave as good as he got.

In reality i don't think Roy Keane would have been scared of any of these. There is a total difference when on a pitch and off.

We are talking about football here ......Keane had a job to do which was to lead his troops from the front ...Ferguson put his head and body in harms way to score goals . Vinnie was probably a better footballer than he let on , and as michaelbailey has already said he its all about intimidation ....They would have fought each other in the ring at different weights except Ferguson and Vinnie , my money would have been on Ferguson ....Vinnie was all mouth and trousers he was a bit of a bully ...but who knows...certainly not you

Dead right - especially George, who used to get the ball at Anfield and run round players looking for Tommy Smith, to run rings round and humiliate him time and again.

Big Dazza More would have taken him out easily. He's a real gentle giant normally, but get him over angry and stand back.

Agree. Souness comes across today as a decent thoughtful person today but on the field he was never intimidated by anyone. In the main the program concentrates on English football but Souness proved himself in Italian football where some of the tackling took the breath away.

It's not to do about thuggery, it's about not letting the opposition out muscle you. It's about being physically and mentally strong. If you ae a big strong centre forward like Fergusson or Shearer, you can guarantee that the opposition will be trying to stop you anyway they can. You often have to be ready for a physical battle. If you are not mentally ready for that (you are intimidated), then you might as well not be on the pitch.

Keane was not a player he had no football skills he was a bully with plsyers he tought he could beat.

Keane may not be able to take on everyone, but he always led his teams to think hard and play well. I only support Man U when they play against European teams and enjoyed their first European Cup win in 1968 (Keane wasn’t even a twinkle in his Dad’s eye then). There’s no favouritism on my part, I just think Keane was very good player and leader and he’s the only real honest host on the Sky TV football channel. He doesn’t take sides, just says what he thinks. I always thought he would make a brilliant England manager, as we’ve had so many namby-pamby managers to date. Unfortunately, the lot that make that decision would never consider him and it may even be an insult to Keane himself, as he is Southern Irish. But Roy, you’re nearly English now and Jackie Charlton did the opposite! Before he died!
