How good is the FOREDOM SR? Let's get the Pendant Motor running!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Let´s get this Pendant Motor running!
Got some money left! Let´s buy this Foredom SR and see what we can do with this pendant motor.
In this video I share my experience as a beginner in silversmithing and opal jewelry making. I take you with me on the journey from outboxing, installment and finally on some work steps, forming, stonesetting and polishing.
Maybe you heard of this Fordeom SR flexshaft pendant motor, which is a highly recommended tool for making jewelry. You may find it is a quiet expensive rotary tool but at some points you may also think a dremel tool or something else will not do „the job“. In my case I recognized, that the dremel is not powerfull enough to grind away metal or to polish with a constant speed. Also think for opal cutting I need a high quality pendant motor to get the best result. Anyway, I bought this Foredom SR with flexshaft and this nice quick release handpiece to upgrade my small home workspace.
As always i try to add some more serious informations in this description:
Safety first:
- Wear eye protection and mask (best advise is a respirator and not a mask like I use)
Foredom SR Pendant motor:
- The Fordeom SR is very heavy, so pay attention, that you fix it correctly. A motor hanger should be your first choice, otherwise you can hang it with a hook on the wall like I did. Works very well but use large srews to fix the hook!
- The pendant motor can „jump“ a bit when you turn it on with the footpanel, so also take care, that it cannot „jump“ from the hook like a fish… or whatever :D
- The Foredom SR has a forward and reverse rotation direction. NEVER NEVER NEVER change the direction while the motor is running. That can destroy this expensive pendant motor.
- The Motor needs enough space around itself, because the motor will heat up a bit and you don´t want to risk overheating it.
- Take care of the Foredom also in future, cause you have to clean it sometimes from dust and after 50hours of working/running time you have to lubricate the shaft with the lubricationpaste that should be included in all the Foredom SR kits
- NEVER put the Motor direct on the electricity. You must have a speedcontrol between the Pendant motor and the socket.
Foredom foot panel speed control:
- The Foredom SR comes regularly with this foot panel speed control which is very sensitive. Before get startet on complicated jewelry projects, you want to get a feeling to control the speed of your rotary tool.
- With the foot panel you should be able to do the jewelry making jobs. If you need a constant speed like for stone cutting it seems not be possible to have a good control. Check out, if you need an extra speed control, like i show in the video.
- That low budget installment I built is not recommended but may help you out, if are on low budget like I am. It´s just not save, because there´s not a possibility to stop the rotation quickly…so this is on own risk ;)
Foredom quick release Handpiece H20 (for jewelry making):
- Connect it tot he shaft correctly. In the owners manual you´ll find the right way to do this. I really cannot explain how to do this :D
- Be sure to buy the right hand piece. Foredom has so many of them and you should inform yourself before buying the wrong one. In my case I wanted this quick release system for jewelry making.
- The Foredom handpiece H.20 is for use ONLY with 3/32″ (2.35mm) shank burs.
Fordeom jewelers accessory assortment kit
- The organizer is very nice to…organize all your jewelry rotary burs
- Help me out to use all of these jewelers accessories :D
- You better search for serious informations on the foredom product videos ;)
I share all my experience, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask and I try to give you some serious informations, if i can :D
And I like to put the link here to get to the flex shaft tools:
www.foredom.net/product-categ...
There you should also find some good videos to nearly all products. Watched a couple of them and found them quiet informative.
THANKS for watching, commenting, everything!!!!

@opal badger Great cat interruptions!!! I'm confused why you were drilling without water for keeping the bits from getting hot (which can then cause cracks in the stones)? But, I DID enjoy and appreciate the video

You have honestly given me hope not only for lapidary and gem cutting possibilities but knowing that someone else out there can spend an entire day making up characters and laugh even when alone is so exciting for me because ive been so isolated or watered down. Thank you!❤

File, sand, and polish your setting before setting a soft stone like an opal. If you slip, you will scratch the stone. Setting the stone should be the very last step. I hope this is helpful. I know not everyone gets the chance to take classes. Also, if you are using metal polishing compound on a hydrophane (usually Ethiopian) opal, there are high chances that the oils in the compound will oxidize and make the opal turn yellow over time.

Also, check out videos on how to flush set so you can learn to hold the tool in a way that gives you more control. You should have your thumbs locked or a finger on the piece to stabilize. If I could remember which video it is, I would just tell you, but I am almost certain it was on a flush setting video, perhaps by estona. If I come across it again, I will post it for you.

Please post a link to the level with the vices you used on the pedal or what they are called. I have the SAME issue with my prodigy pedal which is exactly the same as that pedal, and using some kind of vice like you did was my theoretical solution, but I've never seen anything like these. For the 100 or 120 I paid for the prodigy, it is quite DECENT except for the lack of speed control and I have thought about buying a foredom pedal for it, but I'd rather not do that after seeing this video.

There is NO Excuse for the foredom foot pedal to be like that. My cheap flex shaft has a crappy pedal like that, and the foredom pedal my jewelry teacher had was not a crappy piece of plastic like that. You have NO CONTROL on pedals with play in them. Make them send you a new one. If that one sucks, make them send you another new one.
