I think he has the ability to do well at a big club, but would need to be deployed in a double pivot to exploit his ball winning skills while covering for his deficiencies in possession. That's probably what Bayern had in mind (playing him alongside Kimmich).

United need a DM that is a ball progressor, which he is not, I'd recommend someone like Rongier at Marseille as a short term option, and perhaps keep developing Mainoo for a long term solution

@@gaffs82 bear in mind he relies more on his physicality. It won't be the same when he's already 30++. His technical level also not that good for the top teams. Players with high technique will last longer than those who rely on physicality.

As a Fulham fan, he is the heart of our team, and even though offensively he may not be owning the stat sheets, but he puts a stamp on the game, I think defensively he is still better than Rice, but If I was a big market team, Rice would still be my choice, as he is just better at almost everything offensively, albeit Palhinha still is a phenomenal player

On front foot defending yes.But on defending negative transitions and defending runners at him wieffer needs lot of work.His reading of game inside his own box isn't as good as that of in oppositions half

Thing is, he's a 30-40m player, just like Caicedo is a 60-80m player. The current market means you have to pay 50% over the odds for certain players, especially ones proven in the PL.

That’s one of the reasons why I don’t Liverpool signing him. The way the elite sides what from the DM is not where I see in Paulinha. He’s doesn’t screen like Fabinho does nor is he a conductor like Macca. He’s for the here and now although prior to him going to Fulham, he hasn’t played a lot of footy for his age so burnout might be far fetched. I like him but he’s not a game changing signing like Rice, Rodri or Fabinho

You compare Palhinha to Rodri all the time, but Rodri's top in this 'ancient' No 6 position. Main point I have, though, is I think this position is in the process of being phased out in many teams and replaced with a more mobile/eclectic/progressive player in this position such as what Klopp is trying to do at Liverpool with Mac Allister. Long term, Mac Allister could win a lot more points for Liverpool than Fabinho did. Palhinhasaurus, in other words. Great in their day, kind of danger of becoming extinct.

Rodri isn’t really a pure single pivot anymore as Stones was used alongside him. Having said that having that in your locker is always a great benefit to have. Many Liverpool fans I spoken to don’t like Mac in that role and think he struggles to protect the back 4 adequately. He doesn’t look a natural in that role.

@@PythagorasinBoots Well I'm a Liverpool fan and I like Mac in that role as it is more aggressive/progresisve. With Mac in that role protecting Liverpool's so-called weak defence, Liverpool have conceded with Arsenal the joint least goals in the league. And Liverpool are 2nd in the league. They would be top if their forwards had scored against United last weekend. That's because Mac keeps the ball away from our goal. Mac might not look a natural in that role because he is adapting to it more and crucially in a new team. So of course he doesn't look perfectly comfortable! But it's working! Liverpool are 2nd in the league and have conceded 5 less than Man City who have Rodri. That suggests Rodri (and Stones) are not protecting City's back 4, rather than Mac Allister and Trent are not protecting Liverpool's back 4.

I think it is similar to the developpment on the goalkeeping position. In order to squeeze out the next advantage in world football, I think one should not go for a destroyer anymore but for a quarterback-destroyer or however you want to call it. The central/defensive midfield position is so important or could be, if you have the right players: screeing the backline and initiating the attacks. As for MacAllister: he is not quick enough. Tchouameni would have been great in this position.

​@@FuerstMykisch I agree with the first part of that, that these positions are changing. Not sure if it matters so much about Mac's lack of speed and not sure about Tchouameni either. But I think the whole point here is what I originally was talking about - that the Palhinha tank-like kind of player is no longer a fit for an elite side such as Liverpool going forward. Worth saying because so many people were saying we should buy him pre-season, but that's just not the way we are progressing forward. Pythagoras highlighted his limitaions too in this regard in the video. Palhinha's's a great tank, yes, but we've moved on. And I would prefer Mac Allister than Palhinha in Liverpool's 6 position, and our position in the league and defensive record justifies Mac Allister in the 6.

There’s a lot of good DMs in the world yet you only compared him to Rodri.

They are desperate for any kind of defensive resistance in that midfield. It gets bad sometimes when its just kimmich as a 6 or kimmich as the first and/or deepest midfielder.
