How Ghostbusters' 450-Pound Monster Was Created | Movies Insider

Фильм және анимация

While there are shots so complicated that they require full CGI, many movies still try to make practical creatures that can interact with actors on set. For “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” creature effects designer Arjen Tuiten and his team were tasked with bringing the terror dog from the original “Ghostbusters” movie back to life. This required creating a 450-pound animatronic out of lifelike materials. They placed 21 motors in its face to allow for realistic expressions such as snarling, squinting, and breathing. Meanwhile, the team created a separate terror dog leg to terrify Paul Rudd in a close-up shot. And a more traditional, but no less complicated cable system allowed a skeleton puppet to actually pick up a coffee mug.

    Actually, CGI can do everything. The biggest drawback is all the man hours that one needs to log in order to make a scenery, object or both realistic for just one frame. Using practical effects and then adding CGI on top of it cuts down on half the time, if not more.

    While I'm very glad they decided to use some practical effects in GB: Afterlife, I still think the terror dog puppets looked and moved better in the original film. Something about being shot on hyper clean digital cameras rather than Panavision film cameras with anamorphic lenses seemed to bring out the flaws in the newer puppet. It just didn't seem as convincing. Also, the lighting was better in the original GB, more three-dimensional shadowing and cinematic. When they showed the Afterlife terror dog puppet in the store, the lighting was very flat and bright like a sitcom and it didn't feel quite right.

    The best way of the special effects is using animatronics, puppets, miniatures and practical effects in all the posible scenarios, and where the practical effects fail or don't work, Is there when you must use CGI. Star wars, terminator, alien I and II, Predator I and II, Christopher Nolan cinematography, Guillermo del Toro cinematography. Are the best examples of this.

  • @muhaoai4693

    @muhaoai4693

    I feel that "all possible scenarios" isn't quite right. Like, there might be times where it's simply more cost effective to use CGI, even though practical effects are possible. But you're right in that a combination of all those things is miles better than relying _purely_ on CGI. If you look at Japanese tokusatsu like Kamen Rider or Ultraman, it always looks a bit 'off' when they switch to all CGI, like when you have an Ultraman flying around shooting beams everywhere or a Kamen Rider transform his motorcycle into a rocket. Like, the recent "Ultra Galaxy Fight: The Absolute Conspiracy" mini-series on KZread (which comes in Japanese with English, Indonesian and several other subtitles OR an English dub) gets a lot of praise because the fight scenes are clearly stuntpeople doing the actual moves (e.g. somersaults and dropkicks) while CGI is restricted to the various Ultras beam attacks or effects like glowing blades.
