How Ghostbusters' 450-Pound Monster Was Created | Movies Insider
Фильм және анимация
While there are shots so complicated that they require full CGI, many movies still try to make practical creatures that can interact with actors on set. For “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” creature effects designer Arjen Tuiten and his team were tasked with bringing the terror dog from the original “Ghostbusters” movie back to life. This required creating a 450-pound animatronic out of lifelike materials. They placed 21 motors in its face to allow for realistic expressions such as snarling, squinting, and breathing. Meanwhile, the team created a separate terror dog leg to terrify Paul Rudd in a close-up shot. And a more traditional, but no less complicated cable system allowed a skeleton puppet to actually pick up a coffee mug.

How Ghostbusters Makes Hyperrealistic Practical Creatures | Movies Insider

A mix of practical effects and CGI is always the best way to go. Makes the movie cool.

Completely agree, movies nowadays have lost sight of that and just do cgi
Neither practical nor CG can do everything, but when combined together in a complimentary way the results are amazing!

Actually, CGI can do everything. The biggest drawback is all the man hours that one needs to log in order to make a scenery, object or both realistic for just one frame. Using practical effects and then adding CGI on top of it cuts down on half the time, if not more.
They tried to kill and bury the nostalgia in 2016 but the nostalgia came back, even stronger than before and conquered the destined path... Thank You Jason Reitman...

I am so freaking happy that practical effects are making a comeback! CGI is everywhere now, it's cool to see something more physical. I'd never go anywhere near the creatures, but still.

first thing i said to... its practial and puppets with right mixed cgi for these dogs at they look amazing..... but the animatronic dogs from 1984 still looks better and more scary thats awesome....
This is evidence that something was lost with the heavier reliance on CGI

The terror dog looks awesome
So much work just for one creature/monster/whatever. It's fascinating (and admirable) to watch.
I love how they used animatronics in the new ghost busters instead of all cgi for the dogs, really gave the movie more of that nostalgia keeping it close to the original

I want a duplicate of the Terror Dog animatronic in my house so that if anyone tries to rob me they'd be scarred for life.
This is the way to reboot a franchise in a respectful way to departed actors imo
Please do more of these!
If only Harold Ramis could see this.
Gozer looked amazing and the terror dog looked amazing.
Using practical FX was one of the best parts of Afterlife... I think we're all "CGI'd" out... I hope the industry goes back to using more practical FX and use CGI as "icing on the cake" rather than the entire cake..
I've wanted to snuggle one of these lovely pups since the original release in the 80s and I want to even more now. But seriously, the artistry involved here is insane
Love practical effects!
While I'm very glad they decided to use some practical effects in GB: Afterlife, I still think the terror dog puppets looked and moved better in the original film. Something about being shot on hyper clean digital cameras rather than Panavision film cameras with anamorphic lenses seemed to bring out the flaws in the newer puppet. It just didn't seem as convincing. Also, the lighting was better in the original GB, more three-dimensional shadowing and cinematic. When they showed the Afterlife terror dog puppet in the store, the lighting was very flat and bright like a sitcom and it didn't feel quite right.
These guys should make a doom movie
I ❤ The CGI One! It Looks So Realistic!
This is amazing. Beautifully done.
2:45 I like how the guy interacts with the terror dog.😀
38 years since I saw the first movie and the terror dogs still scare the piss out of me...
That is why the terror dogs look so familiar compared to the original movie!
Its so crazy how much dedication and effort is put into these sets and just little details that pay off in the long run so drastically, they did a really good job on realism and just pulling it all together so smoothly while keeping a comfortable amount of the original movie present

I'd like to pet Vinz from Ghostbusters Afterlife only if he's in a good mood. If I had a female Terror Dog with noticeably longer horns, I would name it "Maggie".
REAL = BETTER than CGI. CGI should, like in this situation, be a tool to add to and help real props and costumes, not always an be all end all.
practical trumps cgi more than people care to think.
4:40 The original Terror Dog is still better by design alone.

@@JediKnight207 OH yeah I forgot that. In that case the Alien Quenn puppet from AVP had to be the most complex. However that was in 2004, now I don't know if exist another puppet that have more complex designs that Alien Queen. Maybe Guillermo del Toro has something 🤔 also the movie Shin Godzilla had some interesting puppets and animatronics 🤔
Greta video but to me it looked very plastic and jerky in motion, if they were aiming for the 1984 look then they nailed it though

Ok,who brought the dog??

I wouldn't call it "hyper realistic" or even realistic to begin with, but the look itself is aesthetically pleasing.
..Is there any subject to study on animatronics solely?...Is this included in film studies or you have to learn it separately through workshops or specific courses?... Esp. in the US...Does anyone here knows about it?
400 pounds?? They basically made the actual monster 😮
Drool like the alien would've helped but it didn't drool in the original
When I 1st saw The Cabin In The Woods I thought most of not all of the monsters in the last 1/3 of the film were cgi, but as it turns out a majority of them were practical effects or even guys in costumes and makeup, and I saw the behind the scenes footage of them being made and used before the final cut.
Hi
Tom Servo? ROFLMFAO
Capturing the drool before it falls off would have been annoying, I wonder why they didn't add a drool pump inside the mouth
@muhaoai4693

Well, the video does mention a lot of servos already in the Terror Dog's head, so it's possible they just couldn't fit one? The shots they show of the servos does make the head look pretty packed.
The best way of the special effects is using animatronics, puppets, miniatures and practical effects in all the posible scenarios, and where the practical effects fail or don't work, Is there when you must use CGI. Star wars, terminator, alien I and II, Predator I and II, Christopher Nolan cinematography, Guillermo del Toro cinematography. Are the best examples of this.
@muhaoai4693
2 жыл бұрын
I feel that "all possible scenarios" isn't quite right. Like, there might be times where it's simply more cost effective to use CGI, even though practical effects are possible. But you're right in that a combination of all those things is miles better than relying _purely_ on CGI. If you look at Japanese tokusatsu like Kamen Rider or Ultraman, it always looks a bit 'off' when they switch to all CGI, like when you have an Ultraman flying around shooting beams everywhere or a Kamen Rider transform his motorcycle into a rocket. Like, the recent "Ultra Galaxy Fight: The Absolute Conspiracy" mini-series on KZread (which comes in Japanese with English, Indonesian and several other subtitles OR an English dub) gets a lot of praise because the fight scenes are clearly stuntpeople doing the actual moves (e.g. somersaults and dropkicks) while CGI is restricted to the various Ultras beam attacks or effects like glowing blades.
I want to work there!
