Ape Expert Rates 10 Monkey And Ape Attacks In Movies And TV | How Real Is It | Insider

Primatologist Mireya Mayor breaks down 10 monkey and ape attacks in movies, such as "King Kong," based on realism.
Mayor debunks common misconceptions about the behavior and appearance of the great apes, such as the brutish strength and massive size of the gorilla-like ape, King Kong, in "King Kong" (2005), with Jack Black and Naomi Watts; the violent rampage of Gordy the Chimpanzee in "Nope," starring Daniel Kaluuya, Steven Yeun, and Keke Palmer; and the intelligence and communication skills of chimpanzees and bonobos in both "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" and "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," with James Franco. She looks at the realism of monkey and ape attacks against humans and other animals, such the plausibility of a reptile-like Godzilla fighting an ape-like Kong in "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire"; the fight between a gorilla and leopard in "Tarzan" (1999); and the mandrills attacking humans in "Jumanji: The Next Level," starring Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Awkwafina. Mayor also breaks down the evolution of ape and monkeys, such as the common ancestor of humans and apes, the hominin, in "2001: A Space Odyssey"; the Gigantopithecus in "The Jungle Book" (2016); and the capuchin monkey in "Night at the Museum," with Ben Stiller.
Mayor is a primatologist and explorer who has gone on expeditions to study apes and monkeys such as mountain gorillas, western lowland gorillas, and the white-faced saki monkey. She is a wildlife correspondent for National Geographic, where she was also part of a research expedition that discovered a new species of lemur, considered to be the world's smallest primate. She wrote the book "Pink Boots and a Machete: My Journey From NFL Cheerleader to National Geographic Explorer," with a foreword by Jane Goodall. She is also the executive director for strategic projects and events and director of public policy events at Florida International University.

Also, in the POTA movies she isn’t taking into account the virus that affected the behavior of the apes and Cesar. In the movies the gorillas are the protectors/muscle, the chimps are the hunters and workers, and the orangutans are the teachers.

the attack was unique and unusual and the result of Travis's lifelong abuse and isolation. He was also given xanax, wine, was overweight and unhealthy and was the victim of very inappropriate behaviour from his owner. He was also known to drive a car. Xanax can have the adverse effect of agression. His case is really sad and tragic. I have no idea why anyone would want to have a damn chimpanzee in their house, it should be severely punished. This attack would not happen anywhere but in this specific case. No ape should be kept as a pet. Honestly he was innocent and the tragedy is the fault of the deranged owner, he was a wild animal. She should have known better and is at fault of the attack.

Totally biased. Just look up real ape attacks, and you'll be mindblown of what they'll do. The worst injuries I've heard of humans inflicting on other humans without tools were amputation of nose, fingers, nipples, lips, genitalia, even a pulled out womb. However, such cases are few and far between and we have almost 8 billion humans and will report on any such horrific attack. Chimpanzees on the other hand will dish out such injuries on a regular basis...

I'm surprised at the rating for the clip from Nope. While chimps in the wild are not like this at all, that's not the context for the clip. The movie is focused on the themes of trapping and confining wild creatures for entertainment and profit by humans. And instances of violence by chimps in captivity, especially when people keep them as pets, have happened and have been extremely violent and deadly. So I understand not wanting to condone an image of chimps as violent and deadly and dangerous when in the wild as they should be, but I don't think that the evidence agrees that chimps are totally safe when kept as pets or entertainment.

The chimp scene from "Nope" getting a 0 is kinda off the point I'd reckon. I used to work in a French school in DR Congo, and one of my colleague was only a teacher to pay the bills. His and his wife's main focus was a chimp' sanctuary. So basically he would try and rescue chimpanzees in the area, mostly young ones who had escaped poachers, some who had escaped hunters, and adults who had been taken by rich idiots as pets. Those last ones were the worst, and most dangerous. He used to tell us of one chimp' in particular, who had been abused so much he was half mad by the point he rescued him (dressed in human clothing, not enough space to live in, bad food for a chimpanzee, alcohol, and even cocaine...). One day, that particular individual escaped from the sanctuary, and began a frenzy through the city : crossing roads, throwing things at cars and people, running wild in the streets... He ended up in the maternity ward of the local hospital (a half-crazed chimpanzee on a frenzy in the middle of cradles...scary thing !). The police wanted to shoot it, they were discouraged from doing so. Eventually, he charged my colleague, full speed. The dude stood his ground, hands on hips, and the chimp' just stopped, which gave a vet' enough time to finally aim right and tranquilize him. Earlier, when his wife had tried to calm down the animal, he had bitten her on the face, and luckily she "only" had a single serious cut (which gave her a small scar). They told me an angry chimpanzee could break a human skull with his hands if it wanted to... Most of the times, what they found were dead or wounded chimpanzees when those encountered poachers or hunters, but sometimes the poachers would actually be killed, and apparently what a band of angry chimps' do to a human is not a pretty sight. All in all, treating a chimpanzee, with the strength is has, as anything other than an actual chimpanzee, is a very bad idea, and someone getting hurt is then only a logical result. So the movie might not sell us the "good ape" side of the story, but the chimp's behaviour in that instance kinda makes sense...

Also, the apes are all housed together because the place is absolutely terrible. It's not as if they were in a high end zoo. And there's also the fact that the apes in this situation have been medically altered to be more intelligent. As in intelligent enough to realize that cooperating will help them escape. Even with the wild ones it doesn't make sense. Power struggles lead to non-consensual castration and missing fingers. Territory disputes lead to wars. He'll, Jane Goodall herself nearly got beaten to death by one. The same one that would later kill and eat a human baby. Chimps are 100% about that action.

What do you know the "expert" is wrong again Bonobos are not aggressive really a new study publishing April 12 2024 in the journal Current Biology shows that, within their own communities, male bonobos are more frequently aggressive than male chimpanzees. For both species, the more aggressive males had more mating opportunities. They also noted that female bonobos and chimpanzees are not passive and also display aggression, the researchers found that male bonobos were more frequently aggressive than chimpanzees. Overall, bonobos engaged in 2.8 times more aggressive interactions and 3 times as many physical aggressions. While male bonobos were almost exclusively aggressive toward other males, chimpanzees acted aggressively toward females as well as males. Chimpanzee aggression was also more likely to involve "coalitions" of males, rather than just one on one violence.

I don't understand her scoring criteria. She talks about how several aspects of each are realistic or not, but doesn't assign the score based on the accuracy of the behaviors. Seemingly, she scores based on how those behaviors get portrayed, or even the impression they form with the audience. The capuchin monkeys from Night at the Museum was the most confusing, since she explained that every one of the behaviors exhibited by the monkeys was accurate to wild capuchins, but since she disagreed with live monkeys being used in the entertainment industry, the film got 0/10. It's odd that a PhD Fulbright Scholar and National Science Foundation fellow would have so much trouble understanding this assignment.

This is why the expert react series with Jonathan Ferguson (keeper of firearms and artillery at the Royal Armouries Museum in the UK which houses a collection of thousands of iconic weapons throughout history) is the best because he knows when something is fictional and will actually praise what devs do while pointing out inaccuracies

Partly because Harambe /may have been/ displaying aggressive behavior towards the child, and partly because the guy who shot him was inexperienced. I say "may have been" because it was firstly unclear if he was displaying aggressive behavior or inquisitive, but even if it were aggressive, it may have been directed at the screaming humans and not the child. Primatologists argue to this day about whether or not shooting him was the correct course of action. On one hand, he may have been trying to /protect/ the child. But even if he was, what's harmless to a gorilla child could seriously injure or even kill a human child, so we still needed to get the child away from him safely. My personal opinion? It was just an unfortunate set of circumstances for everyone involved - the child, the zoo, and Harambe. But I think with the knowledge the zoo had at the time, and with the clock not being in their favor if Harambe was in fact getting aggressive, taking him out was probably the best course of action. But not because Harambe did anything bad.

He was acting aggressive because the dipshits in the crowd were screaming and throwing things at him. Ensuring that he was freaked out. Which led to him dragging the kid as a prop for his display of strength. The crowd stays calm and it probably ends differently.

@@nightwish7074I think the general consensus is that harambe wasn’t particularly trying to hurt the kid, in fact he was most likely trying to keep the kid safe in his own Gorilla way. The problem was the way a gorilla keeps a small individual safe isn’t really safe for a human child, dragging him by the foot, picking him up and running, all things a baby gorilla would have been mostly ok with but is very dangerous for a human. So they had no choice, chances are harambe would have accidentally injured or killed the kid or gotten frustrated by all the commotion ans gotten unpredictable

And last but not least, they are wild animals, as often as this needs to be emphasized. They were never domesticated and are related to us for a reason. There is a lot of danger behind it. You just have to provoke them for some reason and everything starts. It's not without reason that enough documentary filmmakers and researchers have died as a result of such situations.
