How Gaga Saved her Career after Artpop

Музыка

After the failure of Gaga’s third album, 2013’s Artpop, to live up to expectations, critics of the superstar were quick to write her off and declare her career over. But in the years that followed, the American superstar rebounded from those professional disappointments, to scale new heights and become a fully fledged entertainment icon.
So just how did Gaga salvage her career in the aftermath of Artpop? And whose idea was it to do a duets album with Tony Bennett? How did her role on American Horror Story come about? Was the Joanne album a mistake? And why was ‘A Star is Born’ the crowning glory of her comeback? This mini-documentary explores all these questions and more.

I will never forget the Oscar performance moment like twitter was in a DEEP shock that night . People were apologizing to Gaga that night , saying “I didn’t know Gaga had these pipes” to “that was Gaga ?!?” . Even the LM was shocked . It was very much a shift in her career and I was very glad to witness it.

I wouldn’t say LM were surprised, I felt like the general sentiment amongst the fandom was more like “told ya…” 😂 We weren’t used to that type of performance that’s true, but we knew she had the pipes to do that. Still, the perception towards her shifted massively after that performance and I’m happy more people are realizing so by looking back.

It's weird how people measure the records success against previous successes. I don't think Artpop was ever supposed to be as accessible as the other records. And Joanne was one of the best records of its genre that we've seen this century, it's just not as popular of a genre as pure pop.

I really think art pop was meant to be her “fall from grace” as in she low key planned it as such. Everything around it was very messy and controversial and seemed intentional. I have a theory that she wanted to do so to be able to shed the over the top image and constant costume like clothes. It was super risky but she knew she had the talent to help her re emerge a even bigger star without letting the fashion be the gimmick of her career. During art pop she expressed that she was very into performance art and that she had a fascination of the decay of blonde pop icon and on how culture loves to build them up and then destroy them, I believe she used art pop as the vessel to have the public turn on her so she can then return and wow everyone with her real talent which is her strong voice and let that be the main focus of her career vs the over the top clothing. She even foreshadowed this in her paparazzi video where there’s newspapers saying “Gaga is over” and then later towards the end “we love her again”. If you notice when art pop died also did most of the over the top looks and now we have a more “real” Gaga. I think she has one of the biggest come back stories ever and solidified her career forever.

Looking back on ARTPOP 10 years laters it have put a lot of things into perspective. It soundtracked the last year of my true innocence as a young adult. It provided me great catharsis at the time going through my first breakup. The music was as chaotic as i felt inside. Her life seemed to have been pretty chaotic at the time too, having had to cancel her born this way ball tour due to the hip injury that haunts her to this day, and her manager as you mentions having left her before the era started. ARTPOP was an end to an era. She never have returned to being who she was then or before it. She threw everything at us to see what would stick it felt like at times, all very ambitious concepts. I followed her every step at the time. It was a lot of fun to wake up to new photos of her stepping out of hotels with eccentric outfits on a daily basis. The R Kelly situation was so weird. At the time his crimes were played down to a great deal. We were in a strange period culturally in the early 2010s. It would’ve never occurred post this year. G.U.Y is the hit that got away that if having been part of a better received album and era, it would’ve been a huge song I believe. Do What You Want was building up to be a big hit. I wish after the R Kelly debacle that they would’ve relaunched the single with the Xtina version and had them make a video for it. Could’ve been a huge moment for the both of them and a nice way to make a bigger public peace statement between them after P*re*z H*lt*n* having torn Xtina apart during Bionic. Joanne remains my least favorite album in Gaga’s discography. She needed to make a studio album like it at the time but who she had turned into felt unrecognizable. Like she had left her core gay fanbase behind in a way to pursue acting and more “credible music” andI felt incredibly betrayed at the time. I loved her Oscars performance Sadly in the music industry women always have to prove their talent and with this performance apparently a lot of people realized she can sing. It’s so silly when some male artists don’t even have half of the vocal capabilities of some female performers but we never hear their talents being questioned. Chromatica brought me back. It was a return to the dance floor that i never thought we’d get. So I really revauled in that to a 100 %. Other artists had replaced her with providing the pure dance pop that i needed up til then. I’ll think Gaga will become more of a Cher to our generation than a Madonna, in that she will stick around, have her big moments in both music and acting. She’s born to be an entertainer, a star! 💫

The trouble is as a pop artist 2008-2013 she oversaturated and believed her own hype she became the biggest target in so many ways ... ARTPOP was chaotic in every single way and it was so traumatic for her ... And after that GAGA as a pop artist died and she won't ever get back to that level and thst perfectly fine as you say here she expanded her palette in music areas and wanted to garner acclaim and praise for being an authentic actor and performer over pushing for album sales and number 1's I'm proud of her ...she didn't reignite her career in the way fans may have wanted but she really came full circle with chromatica I feel and thstll work beautifully going forward looking after her health in the process

For us who have lived through Gaga's career... her videos were a moment! Her songs were all great pop and overplayed... When ARTPOP was announced and Applause was released I remember feeling numb... It wasn't a great lead single, there were too many promises that I KNEW she could not keep (app, music videos for every song, games, magazines, Act II) and when the DWUW video fiasco happened we were all left speechless. What was there for Gaga to do? She went the opposite way and it rewarded her... I think Joanne was her Bedtime Stories to her Erotica / ARTPOP. She went for a softer image that suited her and then came back with a bang!

I didn’t think Applause was bad at all. I was quite baffled at how little airplay it had. What killed the era for me was when a song called Do What You Want was announced and had R Kelly on? The lyrics of the song really didn’t help. I also remember some of her biggest monsters defending the song as meaning something else, but it didn’t change anything. I don’t even remember the video at the time other than the O2 advert

Honestly, if Gaga was given the creative control she deserved with ARTPOP it could have been her best era. The visuals, the app, act ii and other forms of branding for what ARTPOP could have been signal that her label had no faith in the project... but yet 10 years later we're celebrating it for the pop masterpiece it was. SIDE NOTE: The R Kelly Collaboration was the record labels idea and so was presenting it as the second single, it was originally supposed to be Applause, Venus, MANiCURE and then G.U.Y. You can tell that she really didn't like the R Kelly collab through the pre-release promotional performances where she played almost every song EXCEPT Do What U Want instead opting for Jewels n Drugs (the song that she actually got to pick the people she collaborated with).

The music industry's operations are so bizarre. Her lead single launched at number one globally, and she was proclaimed to be a failure immediately because it didn't sell *as much* as other songs did, even with declining music sales across the board. Popular culture is strange. Marilyn Monroe is a legend because she died young more than for any other reason. Greta Garbo because she went into hiding before she was aged. The music industry used to support and cultivate some talents. Kate Bush, for example, was discovered to have been a brilliant singer, songwriter and artist broadly as a teenager, and she was adopted by music industry reps and put through tutoring and mentorships to refine her talents before they finally launched her. Brilliant, lasting investment-although it must be said that her reputation as a legend is a credit to her genius, but also partly due to her decision, like Garbo, to effectively go into hiding once she reached her 40s. Tori Amos was a preternatural talent, the youngest person ever admitted to the Peabody Conservatory of Music (at age five) for her piano virtuosity, and she was given a six-album deal by Atlantic Records based on her songs, her compositions, her piano playing and her singing. And as soon as she signed, they made her over as an 80s pirate wench (??!) and tried to force her to replace all the piano on her songs with guitars. She has fought with the labels her entire career and has never stopped putting out brilliant music, but the record labels stopped investing in promoting her as she reached age 40. Her 'legend' as a brilliant artist would have benefited from going into hiding, but more than half of her incredible work would have been sacrificed in the name of cementing her as someone who was once great and then mysteriously stopped working. The reputations of artists within pop culture are due to how much their supporting companies pay to promote them and to how critics write about them. Critics nearly always write off women as no longer as talented as they once were after they have been around for a decade or so. There are few exceptions-Stevie Nicks is really the only woman musician who comes to mind and who is constantly praised after never having become a recluse. It's such a strange phenomenon. When we discover artists whose work touches us on more than a basic entertainment level, we should keep supporting their work and ignore how they chart. It doesn't matter.

Gaga/Stephanie is s first and foremost an extremely talented entertainer. In many ways she harkens back to the superstars of an eta long gone, when the studio system of Hollywood sought out people like her- think Gene Kelly -who could sing , dance, act and even the productions they where appearing in. In fact in that regard i could imagine the likes of Astaire or Kelly working with her had this been in the 1940s or 50s. Perhaps ths is What Tony Bennett saw in her Whhatever era you put her in , i think she would have been a star under the right circumstances She is a rarity in that regard and i hope her career will last for many decades as there sre all too few around like her One final point, she carried the Gucci movie -she was absolutely fantastic in that and i am glad that she at least got recognition for it

If the fans weren’t so chart obsessed and pitting Katy against Gaga the media wouldn’t have fed of this narrative and made Gaga feel like a failure… Applause charted for 16 weeks in the top 10 of hot 100… and is half DIAMOND in the USA alone that’s definitely a hit on my book.

You can say the same about Bionic which was a masterpiece but ripped to shreds because it became popular to call Christina floptina due to lady gaga friend at that time “Perez Hilton” who oddly had to much influence for who he was. I was a fan of fame, fame monster and born this way. But art pop wasn’t a great album it had a few incredible songs but it felt lacklustre and bland at times.

It isnt my favourite from the album but it was the most natural hit. .radio friendly...etc...it just had that magic of a hit that applause didnt...it was clumsy and u had to work to like it. I thot GUY was a great choice for a single...was one of my favourites along with Aura and Artpop...i loved watching her career revival although i did not personally enjoy it musically (except for John Wayne)...i am glad her voice got to shine in the aftermath of artpop...she has one of the most amazing voices ...i hear ppl say "Beyonce and Adele" when discussing the best singers. I dont know why Gaga doesnt seem to be added to that category in conversations. I am curious to see what happens next with Gaga...where is she right now? Tour? Hiatus??

For pop, she relied on a lot of repetition and stringing together very abstract lines and phrases that strived to be profound and very seldom were. Her true passion is piano lounge torch ballads and she doesn’t have the pathos or lyrical chops to really pull that off either … songs like “Million Reasons,” “You and I”, “Hold My Hand,” and yes, even “Shallow” are full of platitudes and formulaic arena choruses that rely too much on shouting and stretching syllables and amateur lyrics rather than crafting a unique melody or a compelling narrative.
