How FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE Can Treat OCD | Mark Hyman & Dr. George Papanicolaou

Ойын-сауық

Get my top tips for optimal health and vitality: bit.ly/MarksPicks
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, or OCD, affects approximately 2.2 million adults and 500,000 children in the US. Individuals with OCD often experience impulsive and intrusive thoughts that replay in the mind, in addition to behaviors such as excessive cleaning and repetitive counting. While conventional medicine approaches OCD as a chemical issue, Functional Medicine looks at genetic components, inflammation, gut health, and other lifestyle influences in its treatment of OCD.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman discusses OCD with Dr. George Papanicolaou. They discuss just how debilitating this condition can be and share case studies of how they have treated patients with this condition.
George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health-a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou joined The UltraWellness Center in 2017.
This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Athletic Greens.
Rupa Health is a place for Functional Medicine practitioners to access more than 2,000 specialty lab tests from over 20 labs like DUTCH, Vibrant America, Genova, Great Plains, and more. You can check out a free live demo with a Q&A or create an account at RupaHealth.com.

You don't need to pay thousands to get healthy, stop eating the crappy food out there, eat organic, stop consuming gluten, wheat, dairy, grains, leave sugar for good, no alcohol, no soft drinks, exercise, drink plenty of water, fast, no bad carbs, eat good fats, vegetables, educate yourself on health, and heal yourself. Doctors are not healers, our own bodies are the healers, it does it on its own if you allow it to.

Yes, IBS leaky gut can cause issues with serotonin production. Fixing leaky gut is a short term solutions to treat OCD because that will not rewire the brain effectively. Long term answer is addressing the underlying childhood trauma. By saying that if one can overcome addictions to excess fatty and sugary food, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, party street drugs, social media, music, technology, shopping etc and become minimalist for 6 months, there is a big chance that OCD should become lot less.

Then I went to one meal a day (having never heard of OMD). I stopped wheat and milk. I took a multiple vitamin with B6 and zinc. I got better for one year. Thought I was well. Not sure but I think mold is the issue. Please address mycotoxins! It’s like the elephant in the room here guys!

Had it since 8 years old...father, his sister, maternal grandmother also but it became unbearable after major dental work with mercury fillings between 6th and 7th grade! Dental mill dentistry is real...I quit going to the dentist with one more appointment supposedly to fill one more....3 years later had a toothache, went to new dentist..got teeth cleaned and had a little sore gum...that's all...no cavities...they used me and filled my mouth with mercury ...also at time of first round of fillings depression entered...happy ending? Yes, understanding what it was and now later in life diet changes and intermittent fasting has brought so much good change and no one that has known me can deny it...I am still using cognitive behavior techniques to help me but the depression is lighter and I don't stay stuck and exhausted anymore...no medications...I have been better for over 12 years...my doctors are also impressed.

I have this and it has lead to repetitive and destructive behaviors that I feel a entire lack of control over like I hate getting wet or gettinging dirty I hate certain textures and foods. On the other hand repetitive addictions like alcohol (beat it) Porn ( still struggling). Panic attacks over things not being clean but not having the energy to do anything about it due to my chronic fatigue which leads me to feeling like I'm going to explode. When I was a kid it was smaller things like my shoe laces had to be just so my shoes had to be super tight as a teen it was my shirts had to be a certain way where I was constantly adjusting them. If I feel anything should be a certain way I have to make it that way over and over again until I at some point get over it do to boredom or personal growth or something like that. The worst part is the constant war in my head obsessing over my thoughts of what others are thinking about me which makes going out in public tortures for me. Ps I have Arthritis in all my joints and I'm 34. I had earinfections and Sinus infections my whole childhood I had strep in my knee and almost lost my leg and I had Lymes as a Toddler.

Never give up! In my case, my faith changed everything...it closed the door to some options and gave me a reason to hope. I also believe that the organic biological reasons can be figured out and although different in each of us, it can be done. I pray that you find faith in the God of the Bible and hope in His Word but also that all the tools you need to get better are made clear to you. Keep moving forward and never condemn yourself...keep searching and you will find answers. I truly hope you go the route of faith and functional medicine. Diet is the big change.

OCD for me was primarily an executive functioning issue. Certain things wouldn't register as having been completed. Eventually, I got wise to that and started to hold the dials more gently and slowly turn them until my hand slipped. The result was that it would generally register. Then, I'd just not check it again, I'd accept that it was done and I wouldn't check unless I had some specific reason to believe that this time I hadn't done it.

OCD is rarely genetic though there is some evidence. The genetic correlation is extremely less. It is mainly childhood trauma related. I know this for a fact as someone who experienced OCD since I was around 18 years. Fortunately I was able to see many things that happened in my past and what triggered the OCD. OCD is the aftermath of trauma.

I’m so tired of mental illness in my family. My mother was bipolar; my other son is bipolar. I’m sure my mother had stress. Her sister is bipolar. Both my mom and her sister had gut issues with diarrhea. The problem is, trauma affects those who have these genetics, otherwise trauma might cause another ailment. These doctors have me taking pages of notes and I’m already familiar with functional medicine. Issue is getting CARE AND TREATMENT THE CORRECT WAY.

Trauma does not mean a major event like an an accident for a little child. Trauma can be caused by a child not feeling safe for whatever reason where he or she never expressed to the mother of what he found uncomfortable because sometimes kids worry to share certain tings and keep things to them selves. . Good news is OCD can be attacked in 2 ways using supplements that help OCD and anxiety, TMS as well as working on healing deeply rooted traumas. If he is avoiding something and OCD rituals are the way for him to feel safe, he knows what things he is avoiding.

I've always worried he would have it, but having it at 7 really petrifies me as I know first hand how debilitating this condition can be. you haven't scratched the surface yet. Genetics play a part, but truthfully you will find there is way more that is affecting your child. For instance did you give him childhood vac's? does he eat gluten & dairy? These are some of the main culprits. Then strep or Lyme is a huge one!! there are multiple tests that can be done through functional doctors and they can help. there is a root cause more so then inherited. I would try and go carnivore diet and rid the rest of the junk.

In 2nd interview, I would like it if Mark would let the guest could finish his sentences. SO frustrating.

Is it too late? I am 73. I don't care much about food. Many foods I can't stand, like pickles, vinegar, saurkraut, shellfish, cranberries, horseradish, radish, egglplant. I don't care about eating or restaurants or cooking shows because there is so much I cannot eat. So I am uncomfortable with other people, as they are with me. I have been depressed all my life. I have taken ssri's for the last fifteen yrs but weaned off 6-8 months ago. I am taking gabapentin for a nerve injury. So you functional med drs cannot just tell me to eat cabbage or whatever. too much never mind

With the foods you mention, sounds suspicious for histamine intolerance.
