How Freaks and Geeks Got Geek Culture AND Freak Culture

Freaks and Geeks launched the careers of huge stars like Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, James Franco, Linda Cardellini, and Busy Phillips. It also established executive-producer Judd Apatow as a major Hollywood force, and became a calling card for writer and creator Paul Feig. But what is it about this show that makes it a classic? The story about geek-turned-freak Lindsay Weir and her just-plain-geek younger brother Sam, along with their very different cliques of friends, takes a clear-eyed specific look at geek culture before it took over the mainstream - as well as freak culture, which at that time had very rarely been explored onscreen.

This show was so realistic, without being preachy, and was ahead of its time. It's a shame that it was released in the late 90's, since nostalgia for the 80's wouldn't really come to fruition until around the 2010's.

Although at the time it came out, the aesthetic looked close enough to late '70s rather than the stereotypical mid-late '80s style that was considered highly cringeworthy, and '70s was still considered very much cool (take That '70s Show as a case in point).

I really adore the opening scene of this show. It depicts a jock and his cheerleader professing their love to each other, and just when you think "Oh, it's another one of THOSE corny teen dramas" , the camera pans underneath the bleachers, showing the REAL stars of the show!

One small thing I also really appreciated that doesn’t get talked about enough was how normal their clothes looked. They aren’t flashy, they don’t look brand new. They look like the kind of clothes your mom bought you at JC Penney. So many shows and movies really exaggerate the wardrobe of the 80s and make it seem like everyone was either dressed like Miami Vice or came out of a Jane Fonda workout video. This show didn’t do that and it’s little details like that that really make it special.

Aka me watching Pretty Little Liars as a tween being like?? Does no one sees them how they dress as 16 yr olds going to school?? You do you, ofc, but even years later I'm still a bit jaded that growing up the magical age of '16' was always shown as mature af, and clothes def had a role in that .... and when I hit 16 I felt like a child compared to what was shown on screen

I agree but at least the season we got is VERY rewatchable as just a long movie, there's no big unresolved cliffhangers outside of "I wonder what this character does next" and becuase it was canceled almost the entire cast went on to bigger things.. So as much as I agree we should have gotten more, at least a lot of good came from the shows just one season

Freaks & Geeks also has one of the best, most nuanced and heartfelt storylines featuring an intersex character, not just of its time, but to this day. It truly blows my mind that Seth Rogan had an intersex love interest in the late 90s that wasn't treated like a homophobic or transphobic joke.

I think there really is a lesson to be taken here: any story that is told with compassionate honesty for its characters and their stories will always, at some point or another, be an enduring hit. Audiences are so much smarter than executives give them credit for, and the shows that develop cult followings are often ones with rich complexity and people who you have 'seen' in your real life. Its honestly shows like this that make me so happy to be a writer 😊

If their was one show I wish we could go back in time and make more of it would be Freaks and Geeks. The writers were amazing and they had an A list cast without even realizing it. Freaks and Geeks is a show that most people can relate too. For better or for worse most people are the Freaks and Geeks. A lot of people do come from a rough family background, forced to deal with very real and adult level problems. It was nice watching a show that represented us as real people for once.

One of the best depictions of the teenage years. And I also love the fact that the central conflict, having a female protagonist, isn't about a boy she has a crush on (that's only a part of the story), but a deep existential crisis and a search of meaning and identity. And Millie, who wasn't mentioned on the video, is a nuanced portrayal as well.

At first I saw Millie was one of those awkward kids who was sheltered by their parents because my entire friend group was like that and I found her annoying, but then I got to the episode where Lindsay rejoined the Mathletes and I wished I had a sweet supportive friend like Millie. I'm also glad how like you said, despite the show having a female protagonist, her main drama is never fighting her female friends!

supposedly Everything Sucks! was cancelled for low viewership (which is bs because the small fanbase it did have loved and raved about the show), but Netflix has cancelled a lot of their series with sapphic leads. it might be coincidence but it still looks weird. here's a list of all of the queer shows (I know of) that Netflix has cancelled: -I am Not Okay With This -Everything Sucks -One Day at a Time -Grand Army (kinda queer, still covered many different issues, especially socioeconomic storylines) -First Kill As for Freaks and Geeks, I don't know why,, I forget if they said why in this video lol. But Everything Sucks! was a favorite of mine cause of how scrappy and unapologetically teenage it was.

I feel like Freaks & Geeks and the beloved rock movie, Almost Famous capture that feeling of nostalgia in such a well-done and honest/truthful way that allows the characters to have more nuance and complexities that make them fascinating. I also think Empire Records does a quite a good job as well. While the movie takes place in the present, you still see the stereotyped misfits like the art kid, the weird kid, the depressed punk kid, the popular kid, and the one who "sleeps around" show a lot more complexities in their own lives which is why they love working at the record store because it's their home away from home where they can feel accepted and understood

The purpose of me starting this show was just for some cheesy oldie teenage drama that also covers a "pick-me" / "cool girl" story, a girl who tries to become one of the cool kids. But it did not turn out that way, instead it just annoyed me way too much cuz it was too realistic. Especially Lin's dynamics with Nick made me so anxious because it directly gave the awkwardness and the posible discomfort of a first relationship in one's teens. I also adore how natural and neutral she depiction is. If they put us through unrealistically dramatic and loud high school drama, we probably wouldn't be this poked. But for example when Linsday is called out for breaking the friend group or the way Daniel faked a cry and Linsday called him our for manipulating her and then him manipulating her even more, AND the fact that she still remains friends with him even after the realisation and her hysterical laughter.. all of those stuff are extremely familiar and gives the straight discomfort to you. But also the beautiful things that happen are not exaggerated. They happen and you feel flattered. İt's a joy to watch this masterpiece but nothing like I expected.

That one guy (Harvey, I think his name was) certainly acted like a bridge between Lindsey's group and Sam's group. While he spent most of his time with Sam, Bill, and Neal, he had some hidden messages for Daniel and the other burnouts, which I think had truth to them. He was right about the dark path consuming us if we continue down it. The path to fame and fortune can make us cast a blind eye to what is really important, like friends and family. The path to popularity often clouds our judgement between friends and pawns, and the common sense to tell the two apart. Go far enough down the path, and we may pass the point of no return without realizing it until it is too late. Daniel nearly passed that point of no return in the 15th episode, but came to his senses just in time and returned to Kim. I don't think he would have been happy being in a relationship with the goth girl, even though they had initial chemistry in the beginning, provided she wasn't already in a relationship with another guy. The goth look also wasn't his true self. It was like a persona he built for himself to let people know he existed. Sam and Cindy were a good example of a spark leading to nowhere. Sam had a crush on Cindy throughout most of the series, and it wasn't until she ended things with her previous boyfriend that she showed actual interest in him. But once they actually started dating, I think he saw that she was using him as a rebound or a side dude, and he didn't like it. And then that relationship went up in smoke. I felt bad for Cindy because she looked like good girlfriend material, but I think she should have taken more time between her break-up and her asking Sam out. Then again, we don't know how many days passed between the two events. And finally, I kind of like the dynamic between Bill and Vicky, even though we didn't get to see a lot of them together, outside of the closet scene. I guess she hated the sight of him, his oversized glasses, and probably the way he dresses. Basically, cheerleaders like her see nerds/geeks like him as lesser beings who muddy the purity of the waters (kind of like how wealthy nobles saw poor farmers and shopkeepers who were trying to make a living throughout most of the previous millenium).

I loved, loved, loved this show when it was on and was totally shocked that it was suddenly cancelled. I couldn't believe that others didn't see the same value in it as I did... but apparently they did and do. It was only the boring money men who didn't.

In the DVD commentary, Apatow said the suits at NBC didn't understand the public school experience at all. I never forgot that because it explains so much.

I think the main reason this show never got the ratings is because the main target audience (people who lived this era) where consumed with raising young kids and work and had little time for tv shows; if this show came out 10 years later it would have lived longer

They should reboot Freaks and Geeks with a new cast set in 1984 ( after the original cast has already graduated). It could be a series like American Horror Story where each season is a new cast/ story line. Of course it would have to be done by the original behind the scenes people that created the original. That is the only way you could reboot this show. Or even remake it set later and some of the original cast could be in it as older characters; imagine Neal or Bill as a teacher

@@trinaq Actually, it was the Korean War. in the Halloween episode, Harold says, "The last time I had this much fun, I was pinned down in a foxhole by the North Koreans". If he had been in his 20s during Vietnam, he would have been too young to have the kids, since Lindsay was probably born around 1963. That's assuming she was 17 in 1980.
