As qualify of life in the US continues to erode and more information economy workers shift to remote work there's going to be a sharp uptick in Fil-ams becoming Balikbayans to take advantage of the favorable PHP exchange rate, especially since 2nd gen Fil-Ams can claim dual citizenship retroactively through a parent. If this becomes a trend it could lead to a situation like Portugal where digital nomads are jacking up inflation and pricing locals out of the economy. We could see new social resentments between balikbayans and local workers develop.

"The lack of better education" is not really accurate. The nurses that came here to the USA from the Philippines are all degree holders and very experienced in their respective fields. I came here from Dubai along with about over 300 nurses. We were recruited from different parts of Dubai and Abudhabi. I don't know where that "lack of education" designation is coming from as we all came here already educated from the Philippines. After passing the CGFNS (Foreign Graduate Nursing School) exam, IELTS (English language Testing System), and NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination), then we were granted working visas to the USA. So, I hope people stop that nonsense. We also get paid more than our local counterparts because we all were highly experienced.

Agreed. I know several Americans that went to school in the Philippines most went to University there under the GI bill as there is a loophole that makes it so they can go to the Philippines as it used to be part of the USA but school there is tons cheaper and cost of living is lower especially in the provinces. There is something to be said about the comment "less access to better education". This is true now, but was not always the case. The generation this study most likely took notice of is an older one. The Philippines had one of the first university of Asia (UST), one of the most premier business schools in Asia (AIM) as well as having multiple medical and nursing institutions considered some of the best in Asia. But like I said, this was then. The education standard has considerably dropped in the past few decades due to political policies that have hindered educational growth. Hopefully this changes soon.

Well my son, who went to vo-tech high school and was mocked by his peers in middle school, took Cosmetology in vo-tech, started working as a shampoo assistant in a small salon, ended up being able to get financing for his car without parental help at 19, bought his house at 21 and became the youngest technical trainer of the corporate salon's technical trainers nationwide at 21. At 23, he became the youngest of the salon's design team. He currently has four paid campaigns, tends to get chosen to appear on TV for hair shows, is possibly the most followed design team member, already won a global hair show award with his fellow (Ukrainian) design team member. He has even surpassed his own father (who has two Master's degrees) who worked in key management in state government. He makes six figure income and he is a hairstylist. He had to really work so hard. He is not an immigrant though. He was born here in the U.S.A. (I was still a Filipino citizen when he was born (legally immigrated in 1991). I am now a citizen). And my son was born in 1995. We're not really rich, but we do live comfortably - he in his one bedroom apartment in NYC, me in my townhouse in a quiet peaceful small town here in Eastern USA (and my income isn't even six figures).

@@mariatolentino4516 ahhh, that explains it. While your son is amazing, unfortunately a vast majority were not able to receive the same level of education. This is one of the reasons the PH ranks second to the last in terms of IQ in the SEA region. Not just the curriculum, but also the environment in which kids are learning. Just two years ago in an interview I had at a public elementary school, kids in the 4th grade were unable to read. 4th grade! This was due to the "no child left behind" policy which punished teachers for failing students. And at 50 per class and 6 to 8 classes a day, teachers couldn't teach these kids properly. Of course there will still be success stories like your son. But those who fail to receive a decent education will outnumber them in the thousands.

LACK of education? We, Filipinos will NOT be in high demand throughout the world if we are LACKING proper and good education. Our Colleges and Universities are among the BEST in Asia, we SPEAK English even before we can walk, the ONLY problem in the Philippines, is why Filipinos are leaving for the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Middle East, Europe, and Japan, is the LACK of QUALITY jobs in the Philippines, because of the Philippine Government WRONG policy in attracting investments. The 60-40 Cap in Foreign Direct Investments is the MAIN problem on why the Philippines have a HARD time in attracting FDI, compared to Vietnam and China which is a Communist Nations but have a relaxed rule towards FDI, while the Philippines, a Democratic country but its policy is VERY restrictive, much is the WORST in Asia...unless the Philippine Government relax its rule in attracting FDI, it will NOT change anything, the continued migration of HIGHLY skilled Filipinos will continue, but recently this year, the Duterte Administration is STARTING to relax the rule in attracting FDI, now foreigners can start owning a business in Telecommunications, Railways, Airports, Retail, and Roads, it is NOT enough yet, but hopefully the Philippine Government will OPEN more...

I still remember the days Philippines had to remove the US recruitment of Filipinos and the US bases because it also dragged so many skilled people to join the US military that could've been useful to Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police, similar to what they're doing with the recruitment of Korean and Afghan nationals to serve US armed forces. If PH government allows for US recruitment of Filipinos again in the modern day, I bet millions will enlist and will drain the PH of its manpower, and mass resignation will result in the AFP to join the US forces. Many Filipinos still feel patriotism by serving the US specially the US Armed Forces, that is why there was this crisis in PH on the colonial mentality whether US had good or bad effect on the molding of today's Philippines.

President Quezon said "I'd rather see the Philippines run like hell by Filipinos rather than run like heaven by the Americans". He and the Nationalists got what they wanted. The Philippines for the last 76 years have been run like hell. Who benefitted most?. The Japanese who were the enemy of the US and the Philippines. They got their economy improved by the US. What happened to the Philippines?. We were given our independence and that was it. We wanted freedom from all the Colonizers and maybe that was very profound but in the process we never got our devastated Country rebuilt. Heck the US even abandoned the brave Filipinos who were inducted into the USAFFE who fought with them until the end. Many Filipino Veterans of WW2 never got their back pays that were promised. Most of them just died waiting for their compensation. What happened after 1946?. Filipinos were enlisted into the US Navy as Stewards and Cooks and were not given the chance to have their education formally evaluated. It was only until the Vietnam War when they were given their rights to better ratings commensurate with their abilities. If ever the Philippine enlistment program will be opened, the Philippine Government should demand equal opportunity and rights given to all service members.

While the US govt being so easy on the southern border allowing illegals to come in without proper documentation giving them no choice but to work hard labor here with minimum pay and no proper benefits. I wish mexico to push hard in medical field also because their people are one of the hardest workers i have ever seen.

One main reason for Filipinos to stand out overseas not just in the US but also in English speaking countries like Australia,NZ, CANADA, and U.K. is their English language ability and the fact that their education system was modelled after the US. As early as in the 1960’s, Filipino doctors, nurses ,physiotherapist and medical technicians were allowed to work in the US. These jobs pay relatively high salaries. I remember my niece finished her Physiotherapist degree in Philippines in the 1980’s and passed the US physiotherapist exams, she was offered a starting salary of $50K in Arkansas. Today, Filipino nurses are working in most English speaking countries. In NZ and Australia, at least 30% of nurses in public hospitals are Filipinos. They are welcomed and valued by their employers because of their fluency in English, high skilled and respectful personality.

I think another reason why a lot of Filipinos immigrate or work in the U. S.. Is because of the high standard of local businesses towards hiring employees, like they won't hire people without experience, like how can they have enough experience when no one won't hire them because they don't have experience on the job they are applying for. or they would require college diplomas for jobs like, being a waitress or even as a janitor. That doesn't even pay enough to cover up/ pay up their school loans, and such. Some research even says that most filipino's are over educated for their current jobs. And there is tesda a tech-voc program of the government that aims to train and educate filipino's who didn't manage to go to school, so they could be employed. But in the end only a few hires them. There is also the K-12 curriculum that was supposed to give high school graduates the fundamental knowledge for specific courses and let them apply for jobs like bookeping and other jobs that doesn't require in depth knowledge. But in the end little to none companies hire them, Except maybe for bpo's

Then I helped my parents, and my siblings come over, but everyone of them qualified on their own as well. (All of us were educated in the Philippines.) In addition, we emphasized to our kids, the next generation, the importance of education. 4 of the 7 grandkids have already graduated from college, and all are contributing members of society. The other 3 are not too far behind. In addition, I took advantage of wealth-building thru real estate, a lesson that I learned from my parents growing up in Manila.

Many 1st & 2nd generation Filipino Americans, myself included, were made VERY aware that education is important. Also, to note many Filipino are nurses … why? The US government pushed for it after WWII. That’s why is such a outplayed stereotype for FilAm families to have a nurse, lawyer, and engineer in their families.

WTH? This is ridiculous. We're not rich at all. Most of us work normal jobs like everyone else -- e.g. IT, nursing, post office. We even occupy some of the lowest paid jobs -- e.g. hotel cleaners, caretakers, home-aid. If we're considered "rich", it's only because most of us live with our parents and siblings for a longer time and we pool our incomes together, which essentially inflates the household income. But seriously, we're middle class if anything. What's the most common car we drive? Either a Toyota Camry or a Honda Accord. Where do we like to eat? Chinese all-you-can-eat buffets. What do we wear to church? Jeans and polo shirt / t-shirt. What do we eat? Rice and fish/meat for literally every meal. It's crazy that we're considered "rich" and completely insane that we're considered "super rich," according to this video.

READ THIS: The Pilgrim: Mayflower arrived in New England on November 11, 1620. Therefore, The Filipinos were in America 33 years before the Pilgrims came to settle in Plymouth Massachusetts. hERE IS ANOTHER PROOF: The arrival of Filipinos to Alaska dates back to 1788, when crew from merchant ships came to trade furs with the natives. Eventually, whaling ships brought still more Filipino crew. Many settled and married women of the Aleut, Eskimo and Tlingit tribes. The United States bought Alaska from Russia March 30, 1867 Therefore, Filipinos were in Alaska 80 years before the United States purchased Alaska. More facts: The First Asian American Settlement Was Established by Filipino Fishermen. The fishing village in marshlands of present-day Louisiana was settled by the so-called Manilamen as early as 1763. Through the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, United States bought Louisiana from France. Asians were in Louisiana 40 years before America owned that region.

There could be a sequel to this video that could cover other factors such as the historic role of Filipino-Americans in the labor movement in the US, the high level of Philippine education that enables Filipinos to go work abroad and to immigrate, and also the lack of mention for the weak or non-existent national political clout of Filipino-Americans within the US. Compared to other Asian groups, more Filipino-Americans are eager to be assimilated (perhaps a result of colonial mentality) and are comfortable to pretend not to have Filipino blood. This could perhaps explain why they have no considerable national political clot. They may be wealthy, but they identify more as whites and not as Americans of Filipino ancestry. We should check the share of Filipino-Americans in the $35-billion annual remittances. 1/3 come from North America, 2/3 come from Europe, Middle East and East Asia. Filipino-Americans are a lot different from other overseas Filipino workers. There are more immigrants among Filipino-Americans, than the majority of OFWs. They aim to move out of the Philippines. This is different from OFWs in the Middle East and East Asia, who only work in those regions and whose long-term plan is to return to the Philippines. Filipino-Americans may be closest in type to Filipinos working in some parts of Europe and UK where naturalization and immigration are also possible.

Many Filipinos never want to leave, it's their love for their families that they take the sacrifice of leaving. Here is proof that Filipinos can live a peaceful law abiding citizen, why can't the country show that inherently good side especially our leaders?

Middle class Americans, regardless of ethnicities, are struggling economically… it seems we need to do our research as to which state provides greater opportunities, especially housing. Getting an undergraduate degree is extremely expensive even in government run universities. There’s lots of sacrifices… higher mortgage, student loans, etc. Nevertheless, there are still more opportunities in the US - good infrastructures are consistent - roads, water access, garbage collection, electricity and gas. But in the Philippines, I was told that you can’t get away from corruption in the government… either you are in it with them or you are out of your job. From being a clerk to elected officials… you get an envelope and must accept it if you want your job or leave… Or, people give money to those in the government to get a service that employees are paid to do in the first place. One corrupt technique they will do is to SLOW DOWN THE PROCESS. this happened to me while in the Philippines. First, I went to each desk in the the same room to get an employee’s signature (corruption). I felt like a high school student trying to get a teacher’s signature so I can get my report card. I thought that was easy. The last step was the finale. “It will take 21 days to process your document!” a clerk said to me. Her desk was filled with documents and all around her were more documents stacked high to the ceiling but seemingly old and very dusty. She was giving me the impression that she was busy. But I didn’t buy the scenario because there were no other customers but me. My strategy was to bombard her with questions and to see her boss. The boss started to talk about the low salaries, etc. I was having none of that. To make my story short. I MADE NOISE! and got what I wanted. I already did what President Duterte urged people to do with corrupt government employees and officials, FIGHT BACK. I didn’t slap anyone and only asked questions, demanded answers and exposed them. But in the US, that’s our way of life, if you don’t know, ask questions, do research, find your answers. Digitizing transactions needs to be the only way to transact with the government to pay taxes, fees, and for other services.

its saddening to think that my dad, who got his bachelors and masters in the Philippines, had to study concepts he had already studied for 4 more years to earn the same credibility as someone who studied under another curriculum, as said in the video, which is totally true, the education in the PH is just poor, to the point where it drives people out of the country, everyone i know strives to get out of PH as soon as they finish their school and bring their family to the US or UK or any other first world country for better education because in highly competitive work environments my dad had to compete with people for half of their pay and more time, even though they have the same equivalence in their respective education system. i dont know if this is true for other work cultures around the world but this was the norm in UAE, it just looks good for a company to have as many white people to attract more. this is what my dad's experienced, he drove it in me that PH and UAE held no opportunities for "people like us" so he made it his life's goal to send me to british private schools in dubai (which is hella expensive) and move our family to the UK.

I think "rich" is only a standard if compared to the average Filipino in the Philippines. Most Filipino american immigrants are middle class in the American economy. But! Despite all of America 's faults it is still and will always be the strongest, toughest, and highest standard of living in the world. A homeless american has more money and rights than a middle class Filipino. 46% of middle class filipinos don't even own cars! Just by the virtue of being on American soil you are already richer than half of the Philippine population.
