In this segment of our video book, we cover distances inside our Solar System.
We start out with a brief history beginning with how Nicolas Copernicus used planetary retrograde motion to help move us from the Earth-centric view to the Sun-centric view of our Solar System. We work our way through the contributions made by: Tycho Brahe and his detailed observations made with mural quadrants and sextants; Kepler and his mathematics of elliptical orbits; and Galileo with his observations using the newly invented telescope. We conclude this history with Newton and his theory of gravity. Gravity gives us the first opportunity to explain the inverse square law that will play such a central role in celestial distant measurements as we move out to the stars.
We then explain planetary parallax as an extension to triangulation and use it to determine the distance to the Moon. We also illustrate all the additional information that becomes available once the distance is known, such as diameter, area and volume. Next, we take a look at the orbit of Mars and the Earth and the distance of Mars from the Sun, followed by distances of all the planets and dwarf planets from the Sun. During this segment we cover the major moons around each planet. We then focus on the Asteroid Belt. We explain Lagrange Points and cover Jupiter’s Trojan asteroids orbiting two of these points. This takes us to Earth’s Trojan asteroid, 2010 TK7.
We then turn our attention to the Sun. We triangulate the Sun with Venus to calculate our distance from the Sun - one Astronomical Unit. With distance to the Sun known, we calculate its diameter, surface area and volume; the length of Earth’s orbit; the Earth’s velocity around the Sun; and with that, the Sun’s mass. Next, we use Jupiter’s moon Io to calculate the speed of light and with that we calculate how long it takes the Sun’s light to reach the Earth.
We end by adding the parallax rung to our distance ladder.

Mr. Butler, I believe I speak for the majority of your viewers/subscribers when I say we applaud you sir, for the time and effort you put into your contents. I am currently a student of Astronomy and I wouldn't have had this clear understanding of what my professors talk about if it weren't for your educational videos.

Near where I live in Germany there is a solar system walk. There is a sculpture that depicts the sun, it’s about the size of a skippy ball. About 200 meters there is a post with a bronze earth, it’s the size of a marble, the moon about a hands withs with away. There are bronze sculptures of all planets like this. Its a 10 kilometer walk to Pluto. On this scale the closest star is approximately in South Afrika.

Bravo, sir. These videos are so well produced and written. This is a service to people everywhere. Keep up the good work!
Mr. Butler, I want to express my deep gratitude for the time you put into making these precious videos. I think I’ve watched all of them dozens of times. I suffer from PTSD and insomnia, and I find comfort in listening to your calm voice. I like your slow and thoughtful presentation, and it calms me down and helps me sleep. Sometimes I put on your videos when I wake up with nightmares at 3 AM. I find the subject matter interesting but you present it in a way that takes my mind off of my troubles without being overstimulating. You have helped me in more ways than I could ever express. Thank you, and I wish you all the best.

Some people are so rude asking David dumb questions. Please refrain from such childish nonsense. David has put together what is possibly the most amazing, most accurate and incredibly mind absorbing series of videos on the solar system, the stars, black holes and way beyond into the known universe. Please show him some respect, the man is a genius!
15:29 - 16:00 was the most savage verbal attack anyone has ever thrown at me...
I would of have love to have a professor, teacher role model throughout my academic journey. Im not very good at math, physics, chemistry or just overal scientificperson. I'm just a women facinated with the universe and everything in it. Your simplicity down to earth explanation is just makes it easy for me to undestand to the point that it just makes me want to learn more and more🤗
How am I just now discovering this dude?! I am now a satisfied subscriber of yours Mr. Butler. Keep up the amazing work and thanks a million.
Thank you David, your videos are amazing. I’ve learned more for you about the universe than anywhere else. Please don’t stop!
Take A Moment Sir, you have taught the world that science is a beautiful reality. Thank you. Stay Safe Stay Free
Probably the best and clrearst explanation I have seen on this topic. Thank you sir.
David your videos are wonderful! Thank you! A tremendous gift!
Love watching these at bed time. Just so awesome and relaxing
I fall asleep to these videos. I love them. I learn something new every time I watch them but I missed it somehow in the past 30 years of astronomy. They're smart clever informative interesting laid back soothing and just all-around beautiful. Thank you for making these videos David Butler you made a masterpiece

The work that astronomers such as Rømer were capable of doing at their time with the tools they had is truly astonishing. The thought of even thinking of using the orbit of Io to calculate the speed of light is incredible in itself but then to get as close as he did is amazing.

im new to the channel but i have already devoloped an admiration for the profassor. in a far away place by the himalayan mountains where i grew up people call someone dear affectionatly by the prefix brother, uncle or granpa depending on the age difference. In that manner i would like to say thanks.. thanks uncle david
This is the first video of yours I've seen where you appear in person. I saw the starry background, heard your soothing voice, and had to smash the like button and write this comment before I could continue.
Hey good news! Osiris rex just began it's journey to Earth couple of days ago! It exceeded our expectations and captured 60 grams of sample from Bennu. Hopefully everything goes well and we receive the sample in 2023!!
You have the best way of describing. Simple and direct. Your a very good educator.
I'm sure a lot of people after viewing this series of videos would have exhulted "so that's how we know the distances from different celestial objects". Thank you Sir! A great set of resources to equip the next generation of straight thinking youths.
Nothing but praise for this fantastic work Mr. Butler. I always enjoy your channel!
A wonderful series of lectures that makes it an enjoyable learning session.
I wish your videos were seen more, as I believe they are magnificent.
I really enjoy listening to your voice and the way you explain everything in such a clear way. Thank you!
I've noticed that you occasionally reply to comments even on older videos every now and then. That's really cool. Thanks for making all of these videos.
This video is a wealth of knowledge for space fans. 5/5
Mr. Butler , Thank You Sir for doing this. Your presentation is exceptional , your knowledge , overwhelming yet your calm demeanor makes it very easy for me to take all of this in. As a hobby , I have looked to the night sky in awe with an inquiry mind . I've read several books about our Solar system but none of them compare to the knowledge I've absorbed thus far in your sereies of videos. I have "subscribed" and I'd like to thank you once again , keep up the great work Sir.
This is one of my favourite videos on the internet… ever!
Finally. An astronomer/channel that The People, can understand. Much better than sitting in a classroom lecture.

Your respect for people and for human intelligence is all inspiring and thank you so much for this information
Thanks for breaking down the mathematics when determining indirect measurement
I'm so in love with your video's Mr. Butler. Already saw all of it but can't get enough. Your voice is soothing and with the classical music on the background plus getting educated is a delicatesse for the curious mind. Yesterday I let my girlfriend see your video about How Fast Is It. She really liked it but fell asleep. She liked the content but she said it's very relaxing.
Vangelis sounds beatiful along with your lecture
So glad this exists.
I really enjoy thinking about the brilliant people that made all of this possible.
I've met a few astronomers in my 50 odd-years. My brother, who is an astrophysicist, has met many more than I have. He even worked with Sir Patrick Moore many years ago. We both agree, based on our experiences: astronomers, for some important reason, are the nicest, most joyful and interesting people we have ever met. These videos simply strengthen that pejorative view, at least for me.
The images are quite impressive. The narrator has a very clear and soothing voice. When I watch this video I can become a bit drowsy. The images are quite impressive and the explanations as to how things are measured are interesting.
the way you said 'Enceladus' is awe inspiring
David, thanks a lot for this videos!, so awesome to really go a little bit deeper in knowledge about the cosmos
Pedantic comment: When you know all angles and one side of a triangle, it is not "simple geometry" that is used to find the other sides, it's trigonometry!
Amazing videos David thank you so much. I’m working my way through them all. I’m a wonderer and these answer so many questions I had on all space related things. I’m just surprised more people didn’t find this series in KZread.
I love your videos, sir! They are very well-paced and immensely educational.

Awesome effort in the research and production of this series.
David, thank you very much for your very interesting and amazing videos.
This hits so close to home for me. Thanks for all the amazing bed time stories. Really relaxing. Your work is really effecting me well. Thanks!
Excellent delivery and detail. Thoroughly enjoyed this.
Excellent production, and information.
Well done, 3 videos in and I'm hooked! Thank you! I am very interested in our universe and our origins but getting pretty sick of all the conspiracy theory videos. This is refreshing!
Really enjoying your video's. Comprehensible for a curious mind. Thank you very much.
Captivating. I am glad that you talked about sending Voyager to the photographic point, I have always wondered about that. Now I have an answer to my long held question, too bad that it is so out of reach, currently.
I am learning so much! I love you!!!
I love watching this series
Can't believe you mentioned my Brahe, Tycho! Thanks for the shout-out to my Brahe, Brahe.
Amazing and clear explanation of the past & modern Astrometry technics. Thanks
Thank you, Mr. Butler. Excellent and meticulous work. I do understand much better now, how it is possible to calculate these immense distances, masses, speeds. (And I do understand why I learned calculating triangles in school. It is very important.)
That video was extraordinary. Many thanks.
Mr. Butler. AFAIK the current state of the art is that there could be hundreds of dwarf planets. Having said that, thanks a lot for these great videos, very good job breaking it down simplistically, but still much more professional than your every day TV show. Very nice.
Thank you for another great video, professor!
I love your videos. Please keep making them.
Great video I enjoy learning all those things thank you for this
Another great video really enjoy the likes of these educating videos keep up with the good work 👍💯
The first video I saw of yours was Andromeda and the Local Group. I'm no astronomer but I think I've seen it ten times. It's almost an out-of-body experience. A genuine work of art as is this video on the planets. May I recommend The Sleepwalkers by Arthur Koestler to anyone wanting to know more about Brahe, Kepler et al.
So happy i found this channel :)
I'm not good on calculating even the simple one, mmm... i can but sooooo sloooooow like a sloth... But i still love watching this... it's make everything logic n sure with all the number and calculations.... I watch this every night in my blanket... I never knew that learning can be soo comfortable like this (NOT like that 9 years forced sitting in the classroom... Lol) Sometime i fell asleep because Mr.Butler voice is so calming... Also the video of universe are beautiful (i love it since toddler, i know, i found my bed-hanging toys is a mini universe plushies hahaha) But i will always comeback again tomorrow night to continue! Thanks for sharing the knowledge... And comfort me everynight with the video... (I even once or two dreaming about universe!) ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
