How Fantasy Routes on MikroTik Can Help You Learn Routing

In this video, we'll be taking a look at the Fantasy Routes tool for MikroTik routers. This tool allows you to create custom routes based on a set of pre-defined conditions. (Please use within labbed environments to better learn/understand routing)

    Thanks! Yeah I never really used fantasy routes much either, but it does make total sense now to use this if you want to learn a bit more about dynamic routing and how to effectively apply route filters against specific prefixes without having to spend a bunch of time adding the stuff yourself to loopback addresses or with scripts.

    @@TheNetworkBerg exactly. and also it is a insanely fast way to fill up a routing table to even benchmark on performance. and for OSPF/BGP one just hast to redistribute "fantasy" alongside or instead of "ipv4"

    For anyone that gets confused why there are many of the same route when I added 10000 /24 subnets using fantasy routes, it's simply because you cannot fit 10000 /24 sunbets in a /16, it is just impossible. So the fantasy route generator just generates multiples. This is just comes down to proper subnetting so either reduce the prefix-length or increase the size of the destination network if you are looking for only unique entries :) MikroTik Fantasy Routes Docs: help.mikrotik.com/docs/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=74678282 Rickfrey Writeup: rickfreyconsulting.com/routing-fantasy-easy-to-use-route-simulator/

    hey from your previous video on container, when I was creating VETH interface I noticed it is not showing status if its is running. is there anything else I am supposed to do. am running Routeros version 7.6. kindly help on that. The issue didn't allow me to even ping the container itself

    Yes, please go back to that video and make sure that you follow the steps 100% (Where I add a Bridge and then I add the VETH port to the Bridge) This will change the Docker interface from R to RS and should then become pingable. I think I did reply to you in the previous video as well.

    You seem to have missed a big point with the routes. Whats the point of routes with the same destination if you want to play with route filters? You can generate different route destinations? You only generated 10k+20k routes with the same *destination* and only different gateway...

  • @TheNetworkBerg

    @TheNetworkBerg

    Жыл бұрын

    Because you can advertise all these routes to a peer and apply filters to those routes on the peer, no point was missed you are still stress testing the local routers routing table, but thank you for your input Edit, I think you misunderstood something or a point I should have made clearer when adding 10000 /24 ipv4 subnets in a /16, or simply that it cannot be done so multiple of the same destination is added but I can assure you there are routes from 10.128.0.0/24 to 10.128.255.0/24 they just happen to be added 10000 times, it just comes down to subnetting and understanding how many networks you can fit into a supernet. The /128's I added on the IPv6 routing table are all 100% unique as you can easily fit 20000 /128s in a /64

    the example in the video was narrow. you can simply generate from a /8 or broader (even /0) and afaik you wont get duplicates as long as the prefix count configured isnt impossible without repeats.

    No I haven't seen that before, thanks for sharing! Reminds me a little bit of Greg Sowell's BGP lab he had running years ago, not sure if it is still working though but he used to basically let you connect over L2TP to one of his routers and then create a BGP session with his router to pull down a full routing table. gregsowell.com/?page_id=5771 Never used it myself though, but makes a lot of sense to do it this way.
