How Every Draft Analyst Is Wrong On Him

Спорт

Every year one guy in draft gets crapped on because we bored of talking about the same thing over and over or simply start overthinking on a guy...
This year the NFL world has soured on Drake Maye for overblown reasons.
Drake Maye is a guy who should be talked about as one of the next potential greats we have seen in the NFL.
Today we go over numerous reasons of how Draft Analysts are wrong on Drake Maye.

I love Maye for my Pats. He fits what the organization has embodied for the last 20+ years. I’m talking about the underdogs who have made names for themselves like Welker, Edelman, Brady etc. Let the media keep trying to bring Maye down, because all that’s going to do is fuel his hunger. It’s the perfect fit for both parties.

Maye has huge potential, but from my own scouting I see some very concerning trends with him. Watching film, I see really weird pocket awareness. Everyone says his O-line was bad last year, but when I watch, I see him often getting happy feet and moving out of a solid pocket and into pressure. Then, when that pressure is there, he makes poor decisions and is inaccurate. He's young and raw, so coaching could help with his footwork and his weirdly inconsistent accuracy. But pocket awareness and the panic factor are tougher to change. The kid has prototype size, and a great arm, but I question his mental make up and instincts. I see him being a Jameis Winston type QB. He'll put up stats, and have some great games, but he will also make mind boggling mistakes and frustrate you.

The best part about all this is that the exact same thing happened last year just on a much larger scale with Gonzalez. In my mind he was CB1 but thanks to the talking heads and other so called experts way over analyzing him he completely fell off boards and fell all the way to 16. And the games he was in he was a game changer, the same thing happens with Maye. Can’t wait for him to make everyone pay too.

As a Pats fan, really excited we got Maye! Although it makes absolute sense for Daniels to go #2 and that isn't a bad or wrong move at all. Consider the teams involved. Washington has Kliff Kingsbury as O.C who probably wants to deploy Daniels like he did Murray! Wheras here, Alex Van Pelt is new OC, and runs a vertical passing game in New England.....in the wind, snow and sleet half the season and need a Maye caliber arm to run it. So they make sense where they are! Plus Daniels is mich more likely to start immediately! Whereas, I think if Mayo is pressured by idiot fans and media and that disloyal weasel of an owner we have ...and he throws Maye into the fire immediately, w/our current roster, it may ruin him! The coaches MUST stay the course and work on his mechanics and footwork untill he is squared away and have him learn to read NFL defenses and see the speed of the game for at least one season until be is what he has the potential to be! Have him also run the scout team and get extra reps in practice! He can wow you with his arm talent but that doesn't matter all that much if you don't consistently make the gimme throws! Making those short and intermediate throws that a defense gives you is what moves offenses consistently! Maye is capable of making any/every throw on the field.....which is why it can be frustrating to watch him sail tosses to the flat over his RB's head or throw a bullet that rips up the dirt at his feet, so often! His erratic accuracy is because of his mechanics! His footwork was all over the place last season and appeared to get worse! To the point I wondered wtf his position coach was doing and why it kept happening! He needs to learn to settle down in the pocket and stop bouncing and shuffling his feet. Stride away from any trouble ,set, step and throw...shortening his throwing motion would help I bet, but takes alot longer to learn to do naturally than fixing happy feet! Let Maye Develop. Jacoby is the prototype of a bridge QB and understands his assignment here! He is a solid teammate and will try to help Maye also! If we stay the course, we will be rewarded! He will be 22 w/another draft and free agency to help the roster he kicks off with and he would at least have a fighting chance..... and could quite possibly be good! But fans and media here are morons and will call for heads during a rebuild they know is happening and if they toss Maye out there,I worry he won't be good and the morons will want the next shiny thing! I want Maye to have success because his attitude and aura is that of an excited puppy and I don't want him to lose that! Lol. I can see Daniels having a big year .....but fading like RG3,w)either a major injury or multiple debilitating ones . He is way too slight and taking off from the pocket could get him wrecked and cause yet another rule change that takes away something a defense can do!

Drake Maye was largely considered a close QB2 to Caleb Williams for the past 2 years. These analysts have focused so much on the coachable flaws that they forgot why they fell in love with him in the first place. Can't teach those traits, and he was throwing guys "NFL open" at ages 19-20. Elliot Wolfe came from the Packers, an org that knows a thing or 2 about finding gems at WR/TE/OL later in the draft. My prediction is he will sit a year, Pats will take a blue chip WR or LT in next years draft, they'll probably fill 1 of those needs with all the cap room, Maye will look rough the first few weeks but then we'll look at his numbers at the end of year 2 and say, "Wait, Drake Maye had 4,300 passing yards and threw for 32 TDs and the Pats are in the playoffs again?" It'll be very similar to Jordan Love except Drake Maye won't have to sit behind a wacky legend for 3 years until he gets his shot

  • @JustAnFootballGuy

    @JustAnFootballGuy

    29 күн бұрын

It is worst case scenario, based on it being one of worst supporting casts out of the teams that were considered to draft him. No No. 1 receiver, it is vital to have a guy like that. Lawrence was a generational talent and hasn’t gotten that guy yet. The receivers there are good comp pieces, meaning they are good 2nd and 3rd receivers. But they aren’t that alpha x receiver. Even the guys they did draft. Aren’t that either, could be, but it’s not what they did really in college. 3. The offensive line is in shambles. Not a good sitch. I think Maye can overcome it, he did it at UNC. Not a good scheme, or o line. He had Tez for some of year, even so, he wasn’t a no.1 WR. It could be a rocky start. But I think sitting Maye is the base scenario for the Pats until they level up the talent next year and iron out a few things for Maye.

Using PFF individual grades, which grades him based on individual performance, separated from the team around him, it shows he has been elite. The grading is based on each play and how well he performed for each play. A better performance stat is is BTT’s and TWP’s, which is solely QB driven. I point that out a little later I think. My point was with them that he didn’t have much at all working for him with the WR’s , scheme and O-Line. Which was dog water tbh. He carried that team easily. At least was asked to do so.

There are massive problems with Drake Maye’s game. PFF over values big time throws and does not have a way to incorporate the throws that Maye leaves on the table very consistently. Watch the last game of his career and you will see him passing on wide open checkdowns with 10 yards of space. Missing two of those should offset a 20 yard big time throw, but that is not how PFF’s system works. PFF grade has never been a good predictor of college to NFL success.

THANK YOU IVE BEEN SAYING THIS SINCE THE OFFSEASON HIT. I promise you I’ve been saying this on Twitter for months that Drake Maye is this offseason victim. Not only has Jayden had more time to learn the game. He was in his second yr in the system he was in. Drake Maye had new OC. 2022 was his second yr in the same system because he came in 2021. You can look at a shit ton of really good QBs in the NFL who have amazing seasons. Then lose a OC and an offensive weapon and take a step back the following season. Let me give you an example. Matt Ryan 2015: 38 TDs 7ints MVP Matt Ryan 2016 new OC: 20TDs 12ints Matt Ryan 2017 second yr in new system: 35 TDs 7ints. I can literally show you multiple examples. So to be over critical on a 21 yr old learning a new system that basically asked him to be super man which he did anyway is crazy. UNC doesn’t win more than 2 games without Drake maye. His accuracy is not that bad. I showed you the numbers. It factually isn’t true that he has bad accuracy. He is a line drive type of thrower, which means when he misses, it’s a bad miss. He had no weapons there at NC, besides Tez Walker. Whom wasn’t there for a hot minute. While his footwork needs to be improved upon. A lot of issues fall on the offensive scheme with timing and rhythm.

He's not a victim of anything, just watch any game from start-to-finish and log all the times he flat out misses a throw or makes his receiver adjust and lose potential YAC. It doesn't mean he's all terrible, but for a guy supposed to go top 5 and be a franchise QB, those are concerning issues that don't often get corrected. It's his throwing motion, mostly-it's elongated and segmented from the rest of his body. Even on short routes he brings the ball down to his waist and away from his body, and it causes real issues with accuracy and ball control. Carson Wentz and Colin Kaepernick were two guys who threw the ball like that-both big time athletes who could make plays, and both couldn't be depended upon as reliable starters.

I really think with proper coaching he will clean up that foot work/mechanics. I mean it's been said by a lot of people it's fixable... So why the hate? He isn't as inaccurate as Anthony Richardson or Josh Allen was coming in. I went through not all games but the significant ones and I see the misses on layups but again clean up the footwork and you have yourself a Herbert/Allen 2.0. Goff has a long throwing motion but I don't see Chris Simms hating on him AND He had a better Time to throw than Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels and JJ McCarthy. Throwing motion is a ok for him.

Wait, the play you showed to show his inaccuracy could also be seen as him putting the ball where the receiver would have the safest catch and potential room to run. Risky certainly because the WR may not have been able to make that cut and spin, but there's something else there beyond just Maye threw it behind his receiver. Edit: watched it again. If the receiver caught it in stride, he was getting laid out immediately. By Maye throwing the ball where he did, the receiver got an extra 4 yards.

@JustAnFootballGuy I mean, if we're in an upside mindset than it's fair to say all these guys have tangible & intangibles that make for exciting prospects. But statistically the hit rate (i.e. someone who lasted in the league as a credible starter) for QBs taken in the top 10 is something like 30%. That's only 6 or 7 guys in the last 30 years. Even that small sample is heavily skewed because two of those guys were Peyton & Eli Manning. So its better money to bet that maybe 1 of the current top 3 or 4 QBs will hit, just given the situations those teams are in and the difficulty most will likely have developing rookie signal callers while under huge pressure to turn around their football operations. That's all I'm really saying.

Drake Maye has a great body he just sucks at all the skills you need a QB to possess. He is inconsistent in his accuracy but it is the mental side of the game that leaves you saying "I do not think this player is fixable." He is slow in getting through his reads and it appears that he has an inability to see receivers coming open if they are not the target he is directly looking at. These two factors combine to make him have to hold on to the ball WAY to long. In all of college football he was dead last amongst division one QBs when it came to time till he releases the ball. I have tried to find another college QB who was similarly slow and went on to be a good NFL QB, but i have not found any. Look i think Jayden is fine but i played football my whole life and one thing I’ve never seen is a player be coached out of lack of field awareness. That dude is a deer in head lights when he’s running around. I’ve never seen someone take so many unnecessary hit sticks. Not just tackles but hit sticks. And ppl think that’s gonna last in the NFL? You think jumping in mid air on 1st and 10 and getting bodies slammed by a linebacker is gonna last in the NFL?

Maye has all the attributes of a good QB, but the reason I “went there” with the college is because he committed to Bama and Bryce was there and there was no way he could start of that guy. Let’s be real. Getting a starting job is great, you get to showcase but his mechanics are shot. Everyone says he is a project but every “fan guy” isn’t listening. I know you set out on proving he can be good but after seeing your video I'm more convinced than ever he's going to fail and I'm pats fan. You make a video titled "The Hate Is Out Of Control" and immediately start hating on Jayden Daniels. Secondly "Drake Maye has played at an elite level in all his years as a starter" BWAHAHAHA! So two years vs one for Daniels, and BTW no Maye hasn't. He's inaccurate and inconsistent as hell. He'll throw a beautiful 30 yard bomb right on target. Then follow it up with several wildly inaccurate 5-10 yard gimmes. Or throw it into the dirt. There's a reason his stats vary so wildly against zone vs man. In Zone coverage the DB is farther away and in read and react mode. So Maye's velocity gives him the advantage. But vs Man the DB is in the WRs hip pocket. So accuracy is called for. And Maye's completion percentage drops precipitously to well below average (101st in the BCS IIRC). In the pros all his opponent will do is play man and Maye will struggle mightily.

  • @JustAnFootballGuy

I really wasn't hating on Jayden Daniels... I think to say he is a better prospect with being a one year breakout is... astonishing. Nonetheless, with the poor supporting cast around Maye versus the superstars around Daniels, I think it's fair to say, given Pro Football Grades, was elite. As to his inaccuracy, it's footwork. Something that is coachable. On the man coverage and zone coverage. I am not sure as I don't have data to look at it myself. So I am unsure. Lets say he is not great against man coverage though. The NFL does not play much Man Coverage, most teams play heavy zone. There is some teams that play man to man, but are far and few. Even if teams ran primarily man against Maye, they don't necessarily have the horses to do so. Especially if Maye lands on a team with Receivers that wreck man coverage. At the end of the day, the accuracy issue is not as blaring as it was for Josh Allen or Anthony RIchardson. Its an issue, but one thats overblown and again easily fixable. thanks for watching though
