How Engineers TEST Mountain Bike Parts in a Real R&D Lab!
Спорт
Today, we visit our friends down the road at Cane Creek Cycling Components and see how they test mountain bike products. It turns out they have an R&D lab filled with destruction robots of some sort.
I have no sponsorships or paid collaboration with Cane Creek, so this is strictly for fun. Thanks to the employees and engineers for taking some time out of their busy workday to show us some cool stuff!

As a Mechanical Engineering student this is incredibly interesting and fun to watch! Great video as always Seth. But, seing engineers use imperial units instead of SI units just... hurts.
@spoonlesscorey1628
Жыл бұрын
Its all too common. I’m an engineer in the aviation industry, and everything is in imperial. Our turbo-machinery guys even use Rankin in all their engine calcs. Its just something you’ll have to get used to. I personally just do all my work in SI and make the conversions when I write reports or make drawings.

@@spoonlesscorey1628 Making conversations all the time is a sure-fire way to introduce error into your analysis. It is best to work with the original units because that is the way things were designed. NASA lost a $100 million plus space craft due to similar reasons

Any work place that has dogs, is a place worthy of my viewing time. This was a great insight to a very cool place. Thanks for the video
I don’t think I’ll be breaking my Helm coil anytime soon 😂 Good to see ‘No brakes’ Nate 👌🏼
I used cane creek headsets with with my track bike/fixed and they are so smooth!! This proves they really put their mind into the production.
5:11 really is the best part of the video
I really love this. They actually showed some real engineering stuff. So many companies are just way too secretive nowadays and don't show anything except for glossy PR footage.
Thank you for the inside-look! Love cane creek's products and will definitely continue to support these awesome developers

Gotta love Cane Creek. My old Bonty went through three until I installed a CC headset.
This makes me appreciate Cane Creek products far more!
This is probably my favorite video you've done, getting to see the work put into different parts, the human ingenuity behind them and their willingness to have some fun breaking stuff is awesome!
I remember a friend of mine snapping one of those Marzocchi 130 mm forks back some 20 years ago. Was long suspension and cheap for the time. It just flat out broke, so this one was much safer. At least in this test. Not to forget that everything fails when you give it enough abuse.
“You ain’t a man if u can’t can”… a motto I will forever carry with me.
This is freaking informative. Research into bikes with respect to and not limited to ergonomics only are qualitatively detailed. Thanks so much for your hard work and making my day as entertaining as always!
Wow, what an amazing video! That's so cool that they let you show all that cool testing equipment, that doesn't happen very often in the industry. Lots of interesting stuff!
I love your videos and the content. It's always entertaining and informative at the same time. Thank you, Seth!

Very very cool. I have the fortunate experience of visiting some R and D facilities and it goes without saying, the companies that actually do R and D are generally the more expensive products for a damn good reason.
4:22 “Alexander and I bought two matching Walmart hard tails”. Believe it or not they were full suspension, although from the video I think you’d be forgiven for thinking it was anything but a hardtail lol. Also, ME student here and this was AWESOME. I wonder if the engineers get compensated for their time logging data on the trails 🤔
I really like all your videos, but this was absolutely awesome. Thanks for sharing this experience !!
Im so glad that big KZread'rs can do this kind of things. And Shearer it with all of us that can't go and wisit these kind of things. Please do more Seth.
Was that “no brakes Nate”??
Man that was fun to watch! Keep visiting factories and show us their machines. This in similar to that show How it's Made. Love it!
This whole company does the cleaner more precise tasks Seth’s yard does
Seth is the all-time king in torture testing bike products, prove me wrong
My favorite episode in a while. Thanks Seth.
Love the vids and I also love how you explain things so keep up the good work you are also one of the reasons i want to get into mountain biking so I just want to say thank you.
Using the music from Syd fixes bikes channel at 6:25 lol love it
the fact they can record specific trails and test them is the coolest thing ive seen all day on YT. i would love to work in R&D, if i was smarter and more motivated.
There is almost nothing more fun than destructive testing, eh? It's not often we get to be involved with such things but the information is priceless if you get the chance. Well played, Seth.
Really wanted to see inside the developpement office. Guess it's mechanical engineers' heaven
I love my cane creek e-wings, cool seeing the factory where they are built!

great video and it was extremely interesting how they test everything to build a better product.

If there was somebody like you around when I was riding I probably would have stuck with it. You make learning about stuff not suck. 👍
As usual, very interesting video. I would really have liked to see how a high-end fork measured up to the smasher!
Respect to Cane Creeks testing protocols. They test things so that they are safe from customers like me, who has been using one of their Thudbuster suspension seats for 2000 miles at 30lb heavier than their declared safe weight limit. Its been fine. 👍
More like this please! These are so fun
Man, that was super interesting! As a 150 pound guy, I've blown through 2 forks. First one was a "Next" WalFart special, so no surprise there. The upper stanchions cracked and sent the wheel out front from, I guess, jumping too hard. Second one was a RockShox Judy fork. Somehow I managed to break the bridge connecting the 2 lower stanchions, so my wheel went all kinda of floppy. I'm currently rocking a Fox Float 32, but I'm kinda paranoid sometimes because I can feel a decent bit of flex sometimes. Been casually considering upgrading to a Stepcast 34.
@5:14 Grab me that machine! But sir its a fork stress tester! *GRAB ME THAT MACHINE!*

Hello there that Pisgah shirt makes me chuckle everytime i see it , here in Poland we have a slang word Pizga which sounds very smiliar to it and means feeling extreme cold.
you should test those cheap amazon air forks! ive owned a few and they have al held up good, but ive seen some horror stories online of them just randomly breaking. would be cool to see one of those tested on those machines.
