How effective is the Lifestraw?... Lifestraw vs. muddy puddle

The Lifestraw is a convenient portable water filtration device that I often use during hiking and camping trips. They say it will filter 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria and protozoan parasites and reduce turbidity down to 0.2 microns. I always used it in freshwater sources that appeared to be fairly clean. In this test, I show what happens when using the Lifestraw in a very turbid stagnant muddy puddle. Would you drink this water?

I see a lot of people comment how gross it is that I drank my own spit (or backwash). Seriously? Think about it. Unless you are 100% fed intravenously then you swallow your spit every time you eat or drink.

I was hiking way up high in Santa Rosa CA mountains about 1969 and drank water out of a fast running stream. On the way back i started to feel a little sick. (I was visited at a friend house at the age of 13). I do not remember much about the ordeal, but i got very sick an delirious and in bed for a couple days. (His dad was pharmacist by the way.) I do remember laying in bed and looking on the floor and seeing scorpions moving around.. The point being i never drank any running water again. Just watching this test makes me think,,, do i really want to try this far out on a long hike. I am sure it is safe but being as sick as i was, and totally out of my head for a few days i would not want to chance it ever again. But if i was to go way out by myself,, i would definitely want this as a back up.

Using something similar, the Sawyer water filter, I filtered some mead (wine made using honey and water) after the fermentation stopped and all the dead yeast went to the bottom. I tried coffee filters to catch whatever yeast stirred up, to no avail. The yeast slipped through the coffee filter and kept the mead murky. Putting it through the Sawyer water filter, turned it crystal clear.

What about a fast flowing creek or river that runs past lots of farmers fields would it filter chemicals out? I feel that digging a so called water hole beside the creek or river that would then fill up using the earth to pre- filter that water would possibly give an added level of safety and might prolong the life of that filter, just an idea , what do you think?

These filter straws do work for a day or 2 before clogging up, but you will be better off filtering this water through a few layers of cloth then boil it. For a filter, use a few layers of tee shirt type material then wash the shirt after to have it ready for next use.

Some of you are joking/complaining about that .01 percent that is potentially not filtered but let me tell you it’s a lot better than drinking the alternative. I don’t care what brand you choose, there are several on the market.. it’s just a good idea to have a water filtering device just in case, I wish they had been available back in the 90’s. My sister was 8 mos pregnant and always in very good health. She and hubby loved to go camping, hiking.. etc.. and decided to take one last trip before the baby came. They went to an area in Oregon (4 hrs away from home) that was known for its fresh water streams, companies like Arrowhead made claims of harvesting water from those streams so my sis had no hesitation in drinking from it. In hindsight it was a fluke situation but within just a few hours she became very ill. She went from being a very vibrant and healthy woman to laying in a hospital bed fighting for her life. Not only did she need to have an emergency c-section to save the baby but ended up wearing a colostomy bag for the next 2 yrs. Of course there’s a lot more to the story medically speaking but it would take me writing a novel to explain it all. We, her family were in a helpless panic as to whether she was going to survive, it was touch and go for awhile there.. not to mention that she was unable to have those first bonding moments with baby like most (new) mom’s do. When I say it was a fluke situation, it was discovered that there was a dead bear laying in the water upstream, I mean what were the odd? Was that what made my sister so sick, we’re not completely sure but probably likely. There were parasites in her bloodstream as well. Times were different and we didn’t know as much as we do now. My sis and nephew are doing very well today and a couple of repair surgeries later, my sis didn’t need the aid of a colostomy bag anymore.. she got lucky! They had two more kids since then and they still like to go camping as a family. She’d prefer that none of her family (or ANYONE!) drank from a stream or the like but she always comes prepared with her water filtering devices, probably more than is needed. LoL I’ll admit, the one thing I do appreciate about the Lifestraw company is that they give a straw for each one that is bought to ppl who need it more on a daily basis. I’m sure those ppl are not concerned about that .01 percent, they are grateful to have nearly perfect drinking water instead of not having a choice. Be safe out there peeps.. not sorry. 😊
