Few KZreadrs mention that the Lifestraw was not made for hikers. It was made for third world countries which is why 1. It comes with a neck cord like no other filter. and 2. It was made to sip directly from the source, no bottle attached or sold with it. However, the new Lifestraw (Peak) has been re-designed for the same hikers/survivalists that made it popular; in that you can now screw it onto a bottle, use a tube from a water bladder, and they did away with the neck cord.

Sawyer Mini 0.1 micron and Lifetraw Peak 0.2. So the sawyer filters more, and the sawyer has a capacity of up to 379,000 liters, so it will last you until you die :) Lifetraw has a capacity of only 4,000,000 liters. liters. That's enough for me to buy a Sawyer mini.

@@ConsiderFirstCnE That doesn't make any sense. "Emergency use" is something I carry with me just in case I might need it. Why would I need a Lifestraw for emergencies when I can just use the Sawyer. Not only is the Sawyer a better filter, smaller, and takes up less room it is also easier to use. I've bought and used the lifestraw in the past, but it is in storage now. The issue I have with the lifestraw system is that I can't use it to fill a container (e.g. Nalgene bottle) with clean water. I always make sure that the bottles only contain clean water. The 'gray' water is contained in bags or bladders only and I never carry it with me. That way I can prevent stupid mistakes like drinking from the wrong container.

Sawyer also has the squeeze bottle with a mini. Super cool. The filters filter out the germs. If you can keep debris out it'll not clog or need back flushed as often. Coffee filters work well. A small patch of cotton like a cut up t-shirt may work better. Just trying to keep larger junk out so the filter can focus only on the microscopic pathogens. I use a squeeze bag and attach the clean end to my hiking pack water tank to refill it. Love my Sawyer squeeze system. They used to make an adapter for a sink faucet for boil water advisories. We find the lifestraw more convenient because of size alone. If you are desperate for water then you will lie down and drink from the stream. Life straw is not for any other purpose. It works great and does what it claims. I have tested it in a bacteriological lab situation for all claims and it works well. Urine contains salts and the taste of the salts is not removed but the bacteria is removed.

The LifeStraw is the biggest of the 3. The Sawyer Mini is much smaller and easier to carry. If I was desperate I could lay down and use the Sawyer in the river as well. I could also just collect water and drink from a bottle. I only have access to the filter I bring and I always bring a Sawyer filter so I don't ever need to lay down next to the water source and get soaking wet. When it comes to filtration the Sawyer does just as well at removing bacteria. Unless I am going to be standing in a water source the LifeStraw serves no purpose to me.

Just a tip, if you pick up large aquarium tubing, or something comparable, the Life Straw works as a great cyphon...attach cyphon hose tight around the lip of the Life Straw using a kettle or water bladder set high for gravity tug ....works great for filling my igloo jug. Sawyer is a bit more expensive (than the standard lifestraw) here in Germany (not by much tho, my favorite shop carries them) and it seems about equal to the Lifestraw bottles. I can definitely understand the appeal of having the more flexible Sawyer mini with the pouch. I'll be honest after watching this; I see no reason to not have both. They both seem like great filters to carry on long hikes. We also recently got the less obtrusive looking black and OD green Lifestraws. I agree with everything you said except one thing. The LifStraw is not useless. You just need to understand that it is not designed for hikers, it was originally designed for third world countries were safe drinking water is not readily available. For North American markets, what it is really designed for is emergency preparedness. It's great as a last resort for a bug out bag for example, something to keep in your car trunk. Also note the LifeStraw is actually rated at 1,000 gallons (4,000 liters). I have both the Sayer Mini which I use for camping and the LifeStraw is kept in a bag in my car along with other bug out items.

Also, the Sawyer can be used as a gravity filter which would make filtering a large amount of water much faster and easier. I will always pick the Saywer over the Lifestraw.

Are you sure the Sawyer filters more? You are the only one saying it the better of the 2 but when I look it up online it says lifestraw filters our virus while the sawyer does not .

  • @newageselfreliance

Both Sawyer and Lifestraw do NOT filter out Viruses. Lifestraw does make more expensive filters that can filter out viruses, but the Lifestraw Persona,l like the one in this video, does NOT filter out Viruses. The other thing is the Sawyer will filter down to 1/10 of a micron, whereas the Lifestraw will filter 2/10 or 1/5 of a Micron. Meaning the Sawyer will filter finer particles. Here is an affiliate link amzn.to/3iIUPXc If you scroll down into the info section, you can see the different filters Lifestraw offers and what they can filter out. Only the LIfestraw Mission can remove viruses.

The thing with the Lifestraw Flex is that it only has a .2 micron filter which is twice as big as the Sawyer which is .1 micron. The other thing is that the Lifestraw Flex is only good for 500 Gallons because it can't be backflushed. The Sawyer Mini can be used for 100,000 Gallons. So in my opinion it would be better to get a Sawyer and Vecto 2L water bag.

So long as one is not drinking freshly shocked pool water with very high ppm, not a problem. Other chemicals are present in small amounts (sodium bicarbonate, aka baking soda). Ph adjusters break down. Pool water can be very drinkable and is 100% a valuable resource for survival. The idea that it is toxic is nonsense. 35 years as a pool technician.

The only thing is the NeroFlask doesn't filter as much water as the LifeStraw. That being said I think the NeroFlask was a much better option to bring to Bali than the LifeStraw would have been.
