How Early Nutrition Influences Gut Microbiome -- Alessio Fasano, MD

In his Grand Rounds presentation, Alessio Fasano, MD, presents current evidence on how early nutrition can shape gut microbiota composition, key intestinal functions, including gut permeability, and immune response leading to chronic inflammatory diseases.
The Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) in collaboration with Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine is pleased to share lectures from the Grand Rounds presentations. A series featuring pioneers and thought leaders in Functional Medicine.

Thank you for this lecture. I am a lay person. I was able to understand most of this discussion. It was revealing as to how complicated and phenomenal the human body actually is. As a result of this understanding, I come away with a deepened appreciation of the body’s ability to heal itself. Provide the body with superlative nutrition, stop abusing it, and see what happens! Thank you again! Brilliant!

Outstanding presentation - science evolves. Cognitive bias interferes with the evolution of patient care.

Great presentation, world class, thank you! According to the 1000 first days (about 2.74 years) being super important I come to think about two more (possible) additional reasons: 1. All cells have to divide and the slowest part of the bones/spine takes about 25 years. So the 1000 first days will set up cells that will be a part of you for the next 27 years (10 000 days are about 27.4 years). 2 All young children are dependent on their parents for survival and their habits/mannerisms will rub of on the child which won't really even question it before a quite high age and much of the growth and frame work of the whole body has already been set then. Thus being more difficult to change the trajectory of individual health. I think it is like this analogy: It is easier to start on a new paper than to use an eraser on a used paper and then start over or trying to draw over what was there before and making it look good.

Dr.Fassano, does the celiacs who doesn’t know they are in the celiac zone are at more risk of COVID-19 as compared to celiacs who are on a nutritious gluten-free diet? Most of the studies related to celiac and COVID19 has shown that celiac who know they are celiac don’t have an extra risk to COVID19 as compared to non-celiac. Please respond. Thanks.

I am not the Doctor, but If the diet is well controlled, and the disease is in remission for a long time, nutritient deficiencies(Vitamin D, k2, Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu other minerals) are corrected, there is no further risk. Furthermore, Celiac Disease (active/remmitted) is associated with decreased/inversly correlated mucosal DPP-IV enzyme, associated with Gluten peptide fragmenting/digestion... But DPP-IV is correlated with Type 2 Diabetes, and obesity. This explain the decreased risk in celiacs. Also severe Covid 19 is associated with T2D and obesity. DPP-IV aids the virus in endocytosis(get into the cells). DPP-IV inhibitors now used as prophylactic and therapeutic agent patients with these comorbidities. In conclusion, remitted celiacs might have more protection, decreased risk of infection.

One thing for sure, it's too complicated for us to understand. And the "merging" of osteopathy and allopathy is frightening, not a good thing.

dottore, lei è straordinario, da nobel, in più fa anche sbellicare dalle risate, però...figuriamoci se ci siamo evoluti mangiando carne magra scansando grasso e organi?! non è pensabile...
