It's a common propaganda technique used to control language and ideas. You never say exactly what is forbidden so that people voluntarily censor themselves. They don't know exactly what is forbidden so they get used to playing it safe.

For the people who are actually worth engaging in discussion that isn't street violence- it's to make it harder to work around the censors. Censors can be propagandic in nature, but unless you consider banning slurs propoganda (which is probably why they used such a loaded word), twitch TOD isn't propaganda. The only issue is the erratic nature of Twitch TOS, resulting in the banning of utterly harmless terms.

These algorithms are great. I once had some Yugioh game on my phone that would check my deck names for inappropriate words. I was playing the game in German and it would censor the most random words (like Wasser, meaning water). Turns out it exclusively checked for English swear words. I ended up calling that deck "f*ck you hard" in German which was apparently more appropriate.

Censor algorithms are so funny, I remember when the algorithm for Duel LInks got updated at some point when I was still playing it and had a deck that was just the name of the structure deck Synchro Connection and opened it one day and saw that some part of it got censored and died laughing, don't know why it was but I think something in "Connection" triggered it.

When my friends got me to try Genshin Impact, I very quickly realized the chat is censored to hell. An idea immediately came to mind, and I tried typing the name of an in-game location - Starsnatch Cliff. As expected, "snatch" got censored. Again, it's literally the name of a location in the game.

@@saintjynr it could be spam but their filtering AI also takes out a lot of comments with wording that might prove controversial, and what is and isn’t allowed is often weird and unpredictable, though a lot of it is exactly as you’d expect, slurs, swearing, etc.

I don’t understand how “hard thing”and “dog beat” were okay (because context matters) but coward was the issue. I wanted to ask what Twitches priorities were as a rhetorical question but why bother.

Sometimes, I feel that using insults like "brainless" or "braindead" or even the R-word becomes justified towards places like Twitch and KZread when you realize they never explain what specific word is against TOS when telling you would actually be helpful.

Actually fuming at this. This is a relatively harmless example of a harmful trait of these platforms. It's smart enough to identify the problematic part of the text, so it should ABSOLUTELY be able to tell you where the problem is. Maybe it takes too much effort and resources to tell you exactly what word it is, but is it too much to ask to be pointed to the rule it breaks so we can understand wtf the problem is?

Think of it this way: if a husband only beats his wife when she does something out of a predictable set of bad things or doesn't do something out of a set of good things, she can figure it out and obediently follow the rules. However, if he randomly beats her even when everything seems fine and she ultimately has no idea what she's done wrong, she'll live in constant fear and try to please him with every action, desperately trying to anticipate his every desire and whim to avoid getting beaten. The same applies to Twitch. I hope this helps...
