How Dollar Stores Really Make Their Money

Ойын-сауық

If you’ve ever shopped at a dollar store, you’ve probably wondered how they’re able to make enough money to stay in business, let alone thrive. Of course, stores like Dollar General, Dollar Tree, and Family Dollar are doing extremely well, so they are obviously making more money than it might seem. You probably know that the quality of the items isn’t quite as high as at other stores, but you might be surprised at how low it is, and some of the deals aren’t really that great after all. Let’s take a look at how dollar stores really make their money.

In regions where the retail rents are low in the western US: Dollar Tree. And the reason why I say low rent areas is that in high rent areas, the few Dollar Tree stores to be found just don't carry the inventories of value merchandise as what can be found in low rent areas.

I live in a mixed-income area, so there are dollar stores intermixed with Walmarts and Targets and many kinds of grocery stores (mainstream and ethnic). They can all coexist because the population density and diversity are there. I love that they ALL have the opportunity to thrive.

J K - Are you referring to dollar stores? Because there are non-poor people (i.e., middle class and even wealthy individuals) who go there for some bargains, like party and craft supplies (it’s often mentioned as a lifehack in lots of blogs), but those who go for basics like toilet paper 🧻 are typically the poor. If you’re on a really tight budget (like working minimum wage, and can only work so many hours in the day and week), dollar stores allow you to have a decent quality of life, where you don’t have to do without. The 99 Cents Only stores (at least where I shop) are so pleasant, and the shopping experience is really dignified. Excellent, well-rounded selection, too. Produce is good, and they take up the supply that other grocery stores won’t (like smaller sizes than are standard there). Being able to spend $5 at a dollar store, rather than $15 at somewhere like Target or Walmart will matter for some people, if they’re not into 5-finger discounts.

@@MoPoppins Actually, when I was working for barely more than minimum wage (this was as a small market newspaper reporter, a job I wanted at the time) I found out that when I began purchase things I needed in larger quantities in order to save money on the unit cost, I soon began to have more money. I am talking about little things like t.p., toothpaste, certain food items, cleaning products and such. If you shop at a dollar store, you have to pay attention to unit price. Sometimes those things like the small bottles of brand name dishwashing detergent cost the same, or less, per ounce than the large bottles do. Packaging is deceptive. In any case, being a value-aware shopper is going to save you a lot of money. But being value aware is over the heads of most of the working poor and the dependent low-income people in America. They gotta get back to their TV shows and their dissipated social whirl.

Being able to buy tinfoil at a dollar at a time is how alot of families have to do it, even if buying $5 at a time is much more economical. They only have a dollar in their pocket for that purchase till the next paycheck when they can come back and get spend another dollar toward tinfoil. Ppl with steady, decent income do not understand this. This is why prepaid cells used to be available $15 at a time. It would last about 2 weeks so while they would be better off buying the $30 monthly card, they couldn’t; so they lost out on the benefits offered by it, such as unlimited voice minutes for a month perhaps. Dollar Generals and Dollars Stores fill an important need in many communities. Don’t knock them.

Yes!! THIS! Absolutely! Every media piece I see nowadays that knocks dollar stores always sounds like it is written by someone who can afford to knock dollar stores. Moreover, they sound like they never have or will ever be anything poorer than upper middle class. It's so frustrating. They cite the same annoying GENERALIZED statistics over and over. And they lack actual insight into what it means to be unable to afford much more than dollar items. So they don't really understand what it is like logistically for a person to only have the ability to shop at dollar tree. There's so many factors that these silly reviews don't even attempt to consider. For example: someone who is not making enough $$ to purchase a phone charger for more than a dollar is not in a place to be worried about cancer or other illnesses resulting from contacting hazardous plastics or materials. They are worried about SO much more than cancer in ten years... They need to focus on more immediate concerns, like how is my family going to eat today?? But these videos dissing these stores don't even seem to begin to conceptualize anything like that stuff. It's really frustrating to hear.

My cabin is twenty five miles away from Wal-Mart. Gasoline isn't cheap. I like to see the new dollar stores being built in my community.. I've been in the same town almost 20 years and 2 walmarts were built . That destroyed the local hardware store also a big grocery store was closed. The pawn shop survived only because the owner decided to post Items online , I see his ads in craigslist. The local furniture store also closed down. It seems only the big corporate chains survived Kroger, publix, and fast food. Now I am seeing 5-6 new dollar stores so my area is overrun by big Corporate brands. The only business I see making it here is a unique restaurant or coffee shop but you really have to make it special to compete with Sbux, chipotle, etc. There was 2 taco joints that closed down since 2010 , I'm thinking maybe a unique donut shop with High quality coffee could win over those customers. $3 a cup and maybe $1 for gourmet donuts/"import style"pastries also a special to get people in the door $1.50 for a small coffee and a cheap glazed donut

Potential Dollar Tree Store Manager here. I turned this position down. Your neighborhood Dollar Tree makes anywhere from 1.2 million dollars a year to 1.6 for the higher volume (busy) stores. The store receives anywhere from 1000 to 3000 boxes per week however the Store Manager is ONLY allowed to schedule 2-3 PEOPLE per shift including themselves. This usually means 2 associates on register (sometimes 1 Associate on register that's why the lines are SO LONG AT DOLLAR TREE) and 1 STORE Manager usually unloading the truck/boxes and stocking the shelves. District Management expects Store Management to Scan every individual item into inventory and make sure all 3000 boxes are unpacked and put on the shelves before the next week's shipment. Additional Store Managers are REQUIRED to work AT LEAST 50 hours per week for around 37k. With pipe dreams of one day being asked to move to Virginia and work at the corporate offices. Family Dollar Corp. is owned by Dollar Tree so its the same thing. No Thank you.

As someone who works retail (not in a dollar store) and someone who also loves to compare values, couponing and price matching, I can confirm that I can get a lot of things cheaper in a supermarket than at the dollar store, dollar stores are pretty convenient for certain things though! You just have to compare, theirs actually apps for that and be mindful!

Dollar Tree and Dollar General have been incredibly handy on two separate vacations where there was no other choice for 20+ miles. No, they're not always the best bargain. But when you've got a kid that gets sick, it's 8 pm and the closest city is 25 miles away, Dollar Tree, Dollar General and Family Dollar are a lifesaver. And I like them anyway, very convenient and always more affordable than the local grocery store for anything non grocery.

☝️They aren’t just located in low income areas. They’re increasing being located everywhere. I live in 7 figure house in a gated golf course community and all of neighborhoods around have nothing listed for less than $300K and we have a thriving Dollar Tree about a mile away in a popular shopping center. At forst I thought, “oh no the neighborhood is going to sh*t”” 😂....well I finally strolled in there last year and have been regularly going back for quick things I need to pick up while keeping an eye on the actual value vs $1 scenario, but they do have good deals on some things (gift bags, wrapping paper, scotch tape, a quick shipping envelope, paper clips, binder clips etc).

I worked at a family dollar for a year. Every one of my shifts was from 7am to around 4pm assuming my relief actually showed up. I could not eat or drink on the sales floor but we did not have a break room. Even if we did, I would not have been able to take a break as I was alone in the store for my whole shift. I also could not use the bathroom. I had to run the register, check in vendor product (like coke and frito lay), unload our trucks, stock our shelves, and make sure no one was stealing. It was the most miserable year of my life. And all for $10 an hour which was a full $2 less than I was promised when I got hired.

this is utterly subjective, because it matters more on the level of intelligence of person going in the store. when i go in i go in for very specific things. i can pick up a 1 liter bottle of pepsi or coke for 87 cents, at convenience stores or even grocery stores. they can cost upwards to 2 - 3 bucks. and no you can't trick people into think 1 liter from dollar store and walmart are different, 1 liter is 1 liter. the other thing i use the dollar store for is if i need something in a pinch, sure if i am needing aluminum foil, and i can get 15 feet for a buck. that's great because i don't want to have to pay 4 dollars when all i may need is like 3 feet. as for toys i would never buy toys from there, they are landfill.

I agree with a lot of this video. And there is a Dollar Tree near me. The place is an absolute mess-all the time. Stuff just thrown all over the place. And they make a Killing. And yeah, I shop there, usually for dish soap and air freshener. But that is about it The vast majority of their non food stuffs are made in China. So let the buyer beware. .I have heard about KZreadrs that comment on some of the stuff that the dollar stores sell, particularly food stuffs. They are entertaining to watch, but as a professional chef, I wouldn't go anywhere Near any of that stuff. These stores are great for what I buy there, along with things like Gift Bags, wrapping paper, some kinds of soap, but that's about it. Keep in mind that some Dollar Stores simply sell what other stores cant get rid of, or sometimes they just buy the stock of other stores that go out of business-at least around here they do.

4:01 - This is utterly untrue. Dollar Tree makes a profit of 5%, and Walmart makes a profit of less than 3%. You spend $1.00 at Dollar Tree and 5c of that is profit. The other 95c is spent paying the bills. For that 5c per dollar, Dollar Tree obtains the goods, transports the goods, displays the goods, sells the goods, and guarantees the goods. This is NOT a bad deal. They earn that 5c. These numbers are from the Value Line, a financial reporting service used by investors - available at most public libraries (just ask the librarian for it) - and anyone who understands accounting can learn a wealth of current information about most corporations including sales, taxes, profit, debt, number of employees, number of stores, executive salaries, etc.

Dollar stores, in general, aren't bad. It's all about looking around and making informed decisions about what you're picking up (ie. volume vs price). I've gotten a lot of great deals there, and quality has been pretty decent. Even if the item is $4, it's still a good deal (for example, I found a mini French Press coffee maker at Dollarama for $4, and on Amazon, they're going for up to $20!). Most food items are good, too. You just have to be patient and look around.

If you go to a fake dollar store or a .99 cent store they charge $3.49 for the same tube of toothpaste that I buy for $1 at FD same size too. The way FD makes their money is by selling double or triple packs of cleaning supplies. Toilet bowl cleaners for example. Who needs 3 containers of Lysol toilet bowl cleaner? That much would last me 3 months if not longer. They do have lots of sales and take coupons on all name brand items they sell. If you look for the red tags and match coupons to those items you can save a lot of money.

People who don’t know how to shop properly end up spending more at the dollar store. I go to my local Dollar Tree once every couple months and only buy items I know I am saving on big time. I go through the entire store and stock up and usually spend right around $40. It’s very easy to save some money if you take the time to learn how to and compare prices. I save some money with shopping for certain things because it balances out when I have to pay full price for something else somewhere else. I rarely buy food at the dollar store but for things like birthday cards and ribbons and small odds and ends that you randomly need or MANY one time use things it can’t be beaten as far as prices go!

Everyone knows they sell generic brands and smaller sizes, but there is still a lot of stuff worth getting at a dollar tree vs a regular grocery store. I've found good deals on greeting Cards, Envelopes, Scotch tape, Gift bags, Helium Balloons, coloring books, garden seeds (herbs, veggies ect), small scented candles, hair ties, toothbrushes, nail clippers, even LED light-bulbs and glass drink-ware. But there is a longer list of things to avoid. The batteries don't hold a charge long; most soaps/detergents are either terribly diluted or if they are name brand they're tiny and end up costing more per ounce then a regular store; most of the food just cost more in the long run when compared to buying in bulk-- ditto for the vitamins/medicine; the electronic things, toys, pet supplies, and kitchen utensils are for the most part just very cheaply made and break easily; every once in a while they'll have a name brand makeup product (ie ELF, Maybellene, YES face masks ect.) but for the most part the knock offs won't stay on your face... and the TP doesn't hold up well... Its really just a matter of knowing what's worth buying and what to pass up.

I live in a very expensive neighborhood in California. There is only 1 Dollar Tree in between a Walmart - PetCo and Vons. All stores carry crap items. Would you rather buy tape at Vons for 2.99 or 1.99 at Walmart? No. There are great deals at Dollar Tree. You just have to be smart. Besides if you do use smaller quantities of perishables, then you don’t need Walmart or Vons. Went to Dollar tree for a 3 pack of pop rocks, some food storage containers, baking soda, spices, and a skimmer. All of those things would have cost me more anywhere else. So that’s just an example. So most times I check Dollar tree first then go to whatever store next for what I need. The few things I don’t buy are canned veggies or tuna - cause you can get them for less at Walmart, but only by 15 -10-5 cents less. So it’s up to you.

There are Two 99 cent stores and a Dollar Tree and about 6 supermarkets within 10 miles around my upscale neighborhood. We all shop there for quick trips. Lots of things at these stores are high quality overstock from surrounding big supermarkets. I bought Vegan Ciao cheese normally $8 at the 99 cents store for a dollar. Organizing items are cheap at the Dollar Tree and sugar free candies, chips, soda, glassware, pool toys, wrapping paper, bags, eyeglasses, greeting cards all cheap and decent quality. So not sure where this video gets its info from but if you know your prices and the ounces of items you can get great good quality deals at these cheap stores. They mostly make their money by buying overstock items.

Yeah I've tried those, they're a) ear piercing and screechy b) hurt your ears c) last about 5 minutes d) have terrible sound. Save your money and buy the $6 Panasonic ergofit on Amazon they're the best cheap earphones on Earth.

I’m from a rural area that could probably be considered a food desert. Our local Dollar General definitely is not cheap. They sell a lot of their products at a little more than what you’d pay at a Walmart. They know that a lot of their customers are willing to pay a little extra to not have to drive into town. There’s also a Dollar General in our nearest town (it’s a small town that has a Walmart and Aldi). It’s prices are a lot lower than the location that is closer to my home. I think the chain uses different business models for their locations way out in the sticks and it’s locations closer to population centers.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the name brand items. Some items come in randomly, like herbal essence foam conditioner or dove cream etc, they're not regularly stocked but come in from time to time. They are the same item being sold for over $5 other places but Dollar tree sometimes gets overstock discounted, brand name Barbie accessories and clothes, as seen on TV products etc. These are an absolute great buy!
