How does using paper help you fabricate a quarter panel?
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
On this episode i walk you through how to make a basic paper pattern for shaping a model A sedan quarter panel and get all information needed to make the part from scratch. This technique can be used on any part or panel needing to be shaped or fabricated, with using the steps shown in this video. I cover basic lay out, finding shape, laying out for shrinking, identifying radii in the panel, and noting information on your road map for the panel.
this technique as well as many others are discussed and covered more in depth in my metal shaping 101 classes listed below

Just came upon your video. Very clean and clear explanation of making your paper pattern, wow it's really nice to see such a craftsman creat design and build meticulous body panels bondo free as if they were newly stamped out of sheet metal and aluminum. For what it's worth, I'm completely impressed. Thank you sir for showing the world time and patience pays off and is something we just don't see anymore

Great video, nice to see the crafts have not been lost, don't know anybody that does this hear now, most of the old timers have gone and not many youngsters have the patience to take it up and stick with it.

This helped me a lot with marking the shrink and perpendicular to the panel, not radial around the curve as I was seeing it.

The paper pattern sistem is very well explained and carried out . If beginners follow your instructions they should not have any problems understanding how metal works . WELL DONE !!
Great explanation on gathering the information, gets it down to a science, I think.

Your video is the most clear & concise paper pattern video I have watched to date. You explain in very under stable terms & show graphically on the pattern what is to be done. I now have a more clear idea of how a paper pattern is used & the benefits of it. Thanks for posting this & sharing your experience & expertise with us. Take care, Rick

Hey, this was very informative. Very interesting. I've learn to do flexable tape patterns. Have tryed paper pattern with bad success but now I see, I've tryed with too thick paper. Have to get thinner paper and give this another go. Thx.

This is amazing to me--l am just getting into car body work so half the time l have no ideal what l am looking at but you have explained a lot plus taken much of the novice guess work out of the learning process (for me anyway) and that makes a very complicated process understandable. I could actually see a pattern forming in my mind as your explanations are clear.....thanks again for tips on tools and those magnets. 💯 👍🏾 ha!

`Very clear detailed video. Is there a reason why you didn't cut vertical lines where the tucks were needed and tape them?
@cornfieldcustoms
Жыл бұрын
because i am mimicking what the metal needs to do. a tuck in the paper mimics a tuck (shrink in the metal). I only cut when i need to perform a linear stretch.
Very interesting system you have developed. I can see the benefits in that it gives you a set of instructions for how to actually fabricate the panel. A couple things I am not clear on and would appreciate your thoughts -- Thank you: - iI you have to shrink an area how do you quantify the amount of shrink? In your example you put lines for shrinking but did not indicate the degree at the shrinked edge - Are the radius measurements adequate versus making a bunch of profile gauges out of chipboard?
@cornfieldcustoms
Жыл бұрын
there is not an accurate way to quantify the amount of shrink needed to note. you shrink the area and check it to the car, on a buck or with contour gauges. the radius gauge is more than adequate. if you were to make profile gauges you would essentially doing the same thing that i am doing with my gauge set, except spending additional time making the chip board gauges.
Great tutorial, at the 17 min mark you outlined a second mark just above the fender lip which I take was the fender lip or flare correct? Would you happen to have a video of you forming that lip/flare. I will search around as well. Again great tutorial, I have no experience and I am slowly buying tools to begin practicing this art. Thank you for your videos!

Great job, Mike! Well explained and very informative. I have one question. Do you also add registration points to your pattern, so that you put it back in exactly the same place when you are making the panel?
@cornfieldcustoms
Жыл бұрын
Nothing extra, all the lines and markings i put on the panel allow me to line it back up later as needed
Great video, absolutely enjoyed this. Is there anyway to show how to make this panel with hand tools and your English wheel? I know your very busy and understand if you can't. Thank you for showing this.✌😁

Good Video . When making the panel , are you going to make contour gages off the old panel ? Thanks
@cornfieldcustoms

Not on this panel. Its a simple enough panel to just use sweeps and standard radius gauges.
I was hoping you would do a paper pattern tutorial 👍🏻

I have a question. I don't have any kind of power hammer with shrinking dies. I use a harbor freight English wheel, a stump and hammer/bag. Those roughly 10" lines you have traced for the shrink, I think my instinct would be to maybe initiate the various radius on the wheel, form over my knee, and then lay it over the original panel. Then the various areas the panel is touching I'd add stretch so that the non stretch areas are "shrunk". Is your layout and approach because you have the tooling to do such a large amount of shrink? Sometimes I think of it like playing Tetris....as you lower the sheet onto the shape, if it hits, that needs blocking to stretch out. Hope that makes sense.
@cornfieldcustoms
Жыл бұрын
my lay out works the same for any approach of shaping technique. you would just have to read the map for your skills and equipment. i focus heavy on shrinking due to having the machinery to accurately shrink large amounts of material. if i didnt i would pattern it the same way, just break my approach differently to work with the tools in have. personally i would stump or tucking fork shrink as much as i could and block the rest up, then blend it all out on the wheel if i did have a power hammer

You mentioned "sweeps". What is that?

A sweep is essentially a large countour gauge that are individually graduated by inches of rise
I think a seamstress would make a good metal shaper They already know the basics.
