How does underground gas storage work?

Ғылым және технология

Storage facilities have an important role to play for the security of gas supply, both today and as part of the transition to the energy world of the future. Yet despite this crucial role, very little is actually known about natural gas storage. We want to give you a behind-the-scenes insight into underground storage at our largest gas storage facility in Etzel.

Let's see how well these work this winter.

Seems like a very complex and expensive process, Europe has a huge amount of shale gas which has yet to be exploited. Given the current situation it's a real shame no one thought about doing that.

4:15 that’s one unmanned control room. That control room is not manned 24/7

Why do you cool the gas after compressing it? If you compress it, it needs to gain heat. But then if you take heat away from it, the pressure drops with the heat removal, doesn’t it?

Shoving a bunch of hot high pressure gas into a well? Yeah, let’s cool it down first

Removing the heat does not necessarily lead to a drop in pressure, check out Charles's law. As a matter of fact, as the gas cools off it further contracts, and as long as it is not allowed to perform work by expanding, its pressure will stay constant. Hope that clears things
