How Does This Fly With Only 1 Wing?
Ғылым және технология
Hey all! I really do appreciate everyone watching, thank you! In today's video we're exploring the physics behind the mono-wing. I started by 3D printing wing sections that was glued in order to complete an entire wing. However, it proved to be too heavy. I made a new wing out of depron foam which worked a lot better. The best way to support the channel is to simply watch my video, thanks guys!

Your English is just fine. Certainly beats the hell out of my Swedish.

There are people who claim that English is their mother tongue but few understand a single word they say. I understood you perfectly.
Dude, don't worry too much about your translations. They get the message and details across. Good stuff!

Nice one Simon 😊 So cool to see someone else trying these one winged helicopters! I also based by designs on that original Charybdis design and found the extra stabiliser unnecessary. If the wing has a positive angle of attack, it works just like a flying wing (with no tail). I’ve also found other designs work without the counterweight (again, like a flying wing).

Now let’s try to find a genius who can give basic directional control. Maybe with some gyro magic? Since it’s rotating an upward force might translate into a pitch or yaw if timed properly?
@arturpekosz
Ай бұрын
I have made monocopters with directional control, using a magnetometer (digital compass sensor). A gyro is usually too slow, since most gyros have a maximum measurable angular velocity of 2000 degrees per second, which translates to only 5.6 rotations per second. So unless your monocopter rotates very slowly a gyro can't keep up.

An old Popular mechanics magazine has a design that supposedly works perfectly
Those 9:50 minutes until you mentioned the leading edge of the wing was facing the same way as the prop were Excruciating man...I did not see anyone in the comments mentioning it at a glance...I was screaming internally ! And then...FINALLY !

I was in the same state as you were... I simply couldn't understand (unless made on purpose) that fatal error. I will post it on the general comments but unless the rotating axis is positioned at the beginning of the wing, it won't fly.

Yeah, I saw that, but I just assumed that either a) I was wrong, what the hell do I know about making a mono-wing or b) he spotted the error and fixed it before testing. Never occurred to me that the real answer was c) he made a boo-boo! 🤣 Anyway, this was fun!
I love that you show the failures along the way, it makes the successes that much sweeter.
You humor is matchless. I don't really care which project you pick, your sense of comedic rhythm and involvement rivals the all-time greats, like Buster Keaton. I am a fan!

See, that's what I'm talkin' about! Like a "master juggler" keeping all the balls in the air
The weight on the stick isn't to offset the centre of gravity, but to provide pitch stability of the wing. Without getting too deep into the dynamics, the weight on a stick increases the moment of inertia along the wing spar axis which, once spinning, creates a stabilising gyroscopic force that prevents the wing from pitching.
@IsaacKuo
Ай бұрын
Yes, and another function is to set the wing's pitch angle (as well as the prop's pitch angle). The weight basically makes the vehicle strongly prefer to align its "plane" perpendicular to the spin axis. At that point, you can set the wing and prop's pitch angle relative to the weight pole.
@danielfearn6076

@@IsaacKuo yep good point
@Pixelarter

So adding a servo to move the weight stick up and down, could be used to control the wing angle of attack.
Why didn't you stick the pole into the ground to run these first tests so that you didn't have to be in the line of fire 😂
@stevencrow6935

Your English is fine. When the wing is free to move, the center of gravity is going to be directly below the center of lift; that is just physics. If that orientation of the wing is then such that the thrust vector is not pointing straight down, the wing is going to spiral off at random. The problem is, the center of lift tends to be halfway down the length of the wing, while the center of lift is much closer to the motor, so the wing will yaw (or bank, depending on how you look at it) severely, trying to get the COG directly below the COL. I don’t see how to overcome this.
@mandrakejake

His English is better than some of my English friends 😂
@IsaacKuo
Ай бұрын
It's really untrue that the wing will spiral off if the thrust vector is not pointed straight down. In fact, it's impossible for the thrust vector to point straight down due to drag. The wing has no propeller to counteract drag, so its thrust vector will always point "backwards" compared to its motion. The propeller is there to prevent drag from slowing down the spin rate, but it's pointed in the opposite direction so this doesn't "straighten" the thrust vector downward. It does the opposite, making the thrust vector even further away from straight down. Nevertheless, monocopters work and the fact that the thrust vector does not point straight down simply is not a problem. Why not? Because the vehicle is spinning. That means that the thrust vector sweeps out a cone, and the overall effect is an average thrust vector that points straight down.
@malvoliosf

@@IsaacKuo "monocopter"? Should be “monopter”, one wing. But drag is resistance to horizontal motion. The monopter is supposed to hover, isn’t it?
it's definitely one of the most hilarious flying contraptions I've seen.
I've heard native English speakers do worse. No need to worry at all. Besides, sometimes it helps the goofy tone of your videos and makes them that extra bit unique and fun. Thanks for always putting a smile on my face!

Really nice job. I really enjoy the concept. Thanks for sharing.
Love your work. Always super fun to watch.
I've been watching your videos for awhile now, always top notch! Keep having fun with it and you'll continue to thrive 👍
Thanks for the bonus Swedish lessons so cool! Also amazed that it survived those seemingly violent crashes!
nightmare fuel.... always fun to watch your projects.
great stuff. you have some incredible patience
I loved your video and especially that you are not afraid to show the whole creative process including some mistakes! Kudos!
This is extremely cool - never thought it would work that well but you sure proved me wrong!
Love your work! Thanks 🔥❤️
One word. Fascinating ❤❤❤❤. Your right up there with the Wright brothers 😀
translations are not a problem, the fact that you actually put effort in doing it is really appreciated!

Such a fun project and video and your swed-lish is absolutely great !!! Looking forward to your next mission !!! Love from New Zealand 🙃😉😎
Love your work ALWAYS, Simon!! 🥳
It sounds very menacing, good job!
Wow, that '50s flying saucer sound though! Awesome.
That thing is terrifying! I love it!
Awesome build🎉
I really enjoyed the translated captions at the end; I thought they were great.

Great video!!! Your English is perfectly fine. I always enjoy your videos
I like that it sounds like a flying saucer ! Also the ohhh....... 's on impact are all good !
I love that this channel consistently makes things I've never seen or heard about before. You got your like for mental stability from me. These inherently unstable projects must cause more self doubt than a more conventional one, but I really appreciate watching the success and failures of someone learning new things.
I couldn't get over how much your mono-wing sounded like the flying saucers soundtracks in the bad old sci-fi movies of the 50's. It brought back memories. Good work, keep going, you will suceed!
As others have said the translation was fine, you speak clear and at a good pace, easy to understand you :)

what fun! Very determined and rigidly applied process leading to "maximalt olyckligt" and "bra" crashes. Keep up the work

Super cool! It sounds crazy and I can't believe it flew that well. It's also impressive hearing the Swedish language with Subtitles. Talking about what's happening.

Your translations are fine. I didn't even expect you to address them because I am pretty sure you got your points across just fine. Now I want to build one but style it like Cloud's Buster Sword. Because it really looks like some anime weapon.
You might be able to lower the weight of the counter balance by placing the battery et al on the other side of the rod, where the counter balance goes. Next phase, make it possible to steer. Just add a servo to alter the wing/motor angle... (I have no idea what that would do)😁 Love your projects!
