Im fron Navarra, Spain. I love Portugal and its music. People think that way of "playing" with the voice was brought to Iberia by muslims during the middle ages. But recent studies have found that it comes from a lot earlier. It seems to be an ancient Mediterranean culture heritage. Portugal and Spain simply have conserved it. But ...undoubtfully the one that has somethig very special with music is Portugal.

I know this video is quite old (1yr it's says) but I'd like to tell you about Spain' s history. From the 8th century to the 15th century, Spain was conquered by the mores (arabe's people, don't ask me where from because I didn't look deep into it) so maybe we have inherated this sound from them or not the other way round. Respecto a lo que comentas al principio sobre Argelia y Marruecos, hay que tener en cuenta que España estuvo hace años ocupada (totalmente o en una gran parte) por los árabes. Aún hoy en día, la zona sur de España (Andalucía) guarda una grandísima influencia árabe. Eso también se refleja en su música, el flamenco, del cual bebe está grandísima cantante. Un saludo.

No, You are wrong. It's a millennial MEDITERRANEAN style origin and even Indo European in general too, not only Arab (in fact, the Arabians as we know them today, along with their Muslim religion, existed so much more after, a few millenniums after, shortly before the Middle Age). Because this similar style is sang even in the India and other Asian territories too since always, in the antique Grecce, in Phoenicia, Thrace, Dalmatia, Rome Empire, antique Spania or Iberia, even in many parts of the North of Europe in different styles too for milleniums before, repeat. Probably all begun simply as a religious way, sacred or similar and then ended as popular way, as many other things in the history. Regards.

We, spaniards, have many traditional ways of sing. In some of them you can see some connection with mediterraneans cultures. If you listen to galician traditional songs ( for example) it will be hard to find an arabic influence. I love flamenco, but please stop to spread the idea that Spanish music is only flamenco. It's not even the most common traditional music in Spain.

Está mujer canta como un ángel. Pero creo que canta muy parecido a coplas. Es una rama más. Pero para entender, ver y escuchar flamenco, deben de tener un gran oído y sentimiento . Es uno de los géneros de música, más profundo que pueda existir.

El flamenco no nace de la música árabe. Hay que tratar de aprender, aunque cueste, y no propagar ideas falsas ,que como la publicidad, a fuerza de repetirlas como loros se convierten en una realidad que sustituye al conocimiento
