Honestly it would make sense for fish Pokemon to change gender upon evolution, since many fishes can do that, I'm wondering why they didn't do this already

There is that one cutscene where Arceus tears apart the fabric of reality just so you can have an extra Legendary from an egg, so breeding as a mechanic being caused by Arceus isn't too Farfetch'd of an idea

Actually yeah the whole thing about Volbeat and Illumise being different species reminds me of how for a long time, scientists didn't realize that male and female anglerfish were the same species because they are

Oh, hey I think something you might have missed. You mentioned the part about how do they fit into pokeballs, but we actually get an answer to that in Legends Arceus! The reason pokemon can fit in tiny balls, and how they are able to hide in tall grass even if they're bigger than that grass? Because they're just able to shrink themselves? They're just able to do that. On their own. Funky! :D

I gotta say, the state of the biological sciences in pokemon seems like an absolute mess. Most of what people know about pokemon is the equivalent of wikipedia if you didn't need sources and it was mostly run by children.

in lieu of a technical explanation of the gameplay effects of gender, this is exactly the kind of overthinking i was hoping to get from this topic lmao

I'm surprised you didn't mention the Sinjoh Ruins event, where Arceus is literally seen creating a legendary Pokemon Egg, with Cynthia wondering if this has anything to do with the mystery of how Pokemon Eggs appear.

I really wish trans Marill was still in the games. It would be cool to have trans Pokemon (and humans who aren’t in the background), but who knows if Gamefreak is brave enough.

i'm a big sun/moon nerd and i've never thought about solgaleo and lunala like this before! i would say though, since cosmog is just a gaseous body, it'd be hard to say it's created by conventional reproduction instead of just a fusion of the 2 legendarys' power, which means maybe they shouldn't require opposite gender, just combined force.

The "add first can't edit later" idea may also explain some other interesting quirks- like Alomomola possibly being a Toedscruel to Luvdisc's Tentacruel, or how Unova may lack fairy type awareness because the 'mons who would be part-Fairy is just one rare-to-find grass line in a dense forest. Maybe in Kanto and some of Johto, abilities are more seen as passive traits and not as active influences. Maybe moves that get retyped are a result of their own form of adaptation, so a proto-Bite or a proto-Sand attack would be more normal. Maybe the durability of TMs in Unova carried on elsewhere, and maybe it's a result of Team Plasma or Team Galactic.

This video is great! I'm a weird nerd so I love stuff like this. Most people forget that nidorina and nidoqueen cannot breed. Also I'm so glad you talked about the trans marill, Abby. You're so poggers!

if Ditto passes on its own genetic material ((it’s own IVs)), then it can’t be a genetic clone of its mate, right? does it maybe alter its genes to be compatible? or maybe its genes are just naturally compatible with every Pokémon? the second answer would make sense, since it’s a failed clone of Mew, ancestor of all Pokémon
